Well, pretty much all villains are sore losers. They just can't accept defeat and will do whatever it takes to win (or draw) including or rather especially, cheap shots.

But what really makes no sense to me is why the planet wasn't blow up in regular fights later on. If Vegeta could blow up a planet at the Saiyan Saga, how come some of the more serious blasts from powerful foes like Shenron, who are infinitively stronger than Saiyan Saga Vegeta, didn't destroy the planet?

yeeeeah. DBZ kinda went AWOL after the Freiza saga. Considering the creator wanted the Freiza saga to be the end it makes sense.

Cell Saga was pushing it, Buu saga just destroyed any sense of trying. It was just balls to the wall ridiculous. GT saga was just for shits and giggles to see how broken they could make things =p

the blasts are probably concentrated and not aimed directly towards the core of the earth. besides i think the writers said they would stop showing the extreme amounts of power all the time after frieza because it would get ridiculous like that
