there is a fallacy in your key argument: Edison was not a businessman,but a scientist. His ultimate goal was not to make money out of his discovery, but to create a new convenience, to generate a disruption in the paradigm he lived in. He was not the one taking credit for his own work, and did not try to launch 9999 different bulbs on the market.
