@QuestionForHumanity So the only reason you would have kids is because a god tells you to and to populate his eternal disneyland so he has his minions to worship him?

@themediocrenontheist Any data on cannibals, savages, barbarians, those with no faith and the carnage they have wrought upon their fellows? NO? hammmmm
Not ALL theiists were savages. All savages are savages.
@1Makyo Neither theist philosophers, nor secular philosophers have a monopoly on morality, for sure. I merely evoke Steven Weinberg, when he said that "with or without religion, good people can behave well and bad people can do evil; but for good people to do evil—that takes religion." When atheists do unethical things, it's because they're dicks. When theists do them, it's because they have a doctrine informing their actions, telling them what should or should not be done, to be closer to God.
@1Makyo "haha What could possibly be "evil" to an atheist. Nothing is evil to a dog..." - 1Makyo
The difference between a dog and a human, though patronizingly simple, I will explain. If a two-year old child draws on your walls, they've done nothing "wrong." I am twenty-six; if *I* go into your house and draw all over your wall, I've done something wrong. The difference is that I possess the cognition required to comprehend my actions and their impact on others; a dog or baby does not.
@1Makyo Though I'm thankful for the addition of a new term (heuristic) to my lexicon, dialogue ended for me when you remarked so senselessly on homosexuality. You seem completely incorrigible, and so I'll resist the Don Quixote compulsion to charge at you, and other windmills like you in the future. Thanks, but no thanks.
@1Makyo Are you familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? Sentient beings have not only basic physiological needs to fulfill, but also advanced psychological needs. My morality is derived purely from an ethical standpoint, in the sense that any actions which cause physical or emotional anguish to a conscious being are generally "wrong." My credo is simply "do not harm; do help." If it is conducive to the flourishing of conscious creatures, it is "good." If destructive to them, it is "bad."
@themediocrenontheist I'm sure you have an "answer" for everything, but I will play a lttle anyway.
Dogs have parents.. At least mentors. There is a mentoring process for most creatures on earth , sentient or not. I personally don't think homosexuals are sentient beings, but that is another story. Aside from heuristic experiences, and instinct and mentoring, which is, after all, what religion is, how would you know if one likes cock in his mouth or his ass?
@beenn15 It means he is wrong, and he is a bigot. All pastors are bigots. Necessarily so if they believe in their religion as the one true religion. This is true because they do so at the expense of all other religions. Bigotry is built in to the various religions.
"You have been weighed in the balances and been found wanting" ! This gathering is not free thinking...it is smoke screens and mental gymnastics fuelled by carnal ego bondage. Honestly??? The biblical accounts and scriptures you twist to prove your points are taken completely out of the overall Biblical context. Which ones?...all of them!
P.S. Have you considered a position working with the writers of Dr.Seuss? :-)
@1Makyo Defining a-theist as one who does not believe in the existence of a god or gods, as most atheists would accept, atheist does not fit the definition of bigot at all.
Some atheists may be bigots, but it is completely unfair to slap the label of bigot onto atheists in general.
@1Makyo The reason most atheists speak up is because of those of faith that try to push their beliefs system on everyone else. They do it very publicly and very vocally. When they try to get laws in place or get the government to do things that line up with their faith, those that don't agree can and should speak up. For those like you that are intolerant of anything against your beliefs, well you can deal with it or stop pushing your crap on society as a whole.
@1Makyo I can't tolerate people pushing their ancient superstitious nonsense on the country or world as a whole. This goes for any religion but especially for the islamic and christian religions. As for what I believe in, well I believe in a lot of things but you are talking supernatural wise here. As for that, I reject the idea of any god based on no credible evidence of one. That in itself is not a belief but a stance on the subject based on logic, reason and lack of proof.
@1Makyo Ah the problem is when it comes to believers it affects everyone as they push it on society as a whole. Just look at politics. The far right were in an up roar over catholic medical organizations possibly having to cover contraceptives for female workers. All the gop candidates all jumped on that one.
Seth never really was a christian....he is a liar!!! Just because a person jumps in a pond....does this make him a fish??? He should stop the lying to promote the religion he now embraces: Atheism! Stop lying and tell them who the real author and finisher of your faith is!
@runwithtruth Oh I love when someone faith does this. If someone was a christian and isn't anymore or someone who is a christian does something that another christian doesn't believe in, it's always, "well they were never really a true christian". FYI, just because a book says it and a lot of people follow it, doesn't make your religion true and your god real.
The trends here are just astonishing. Almost always, the posts by ambitious spammer zealots are people named "runwithtruth," "1Godonlyone," "ShockofGod," et cetera. I realize that these books instruct people to "go into the world, and preach the gospel to all creation," but dang...
I love how you just said you are not a judge but then you go right on to insinuate that I have some sort of empty feeling. Typical Christian, nothing to see here. I get the feeling that you're just like the insecure jock that bullies the gay kid in high school because he is afraid of his true sexual feelings. You say I'm bitter and empty but we both know you are the one that is desperately looking for attention. I mean why else visit pro-atheist videos? No other reason than to garner attention.
@Buck2120 Maybe I was the gay kid in High school afraid of my true sexual feelings??? Maybe I am full now because I confronted my true sexual feelings. Maybe I'm not the one seeking attention because I found the attention of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Maybe I visited because some foolish atheist thought I might be the next convert??? Isn't this why you are here??? The lust of the flesh??? If you will come to Christ He will forgive you! You do not have to live with the guilt anymore. He loves you!
@runwithtruth The only people that live with guilt are christians. The whole faith is build on guilt and self loathing. Turn away from your irrational christian faith and free yourself from the shackles of that immoral, evil, made up being of yours.
@Buck2120 I'm not typical...and neither are you. I have visited because you are a precious soul made in the image of God. No gamer attention....God loves you!
I fell victim to that pressure, but learned later on that I needed to find me OWN way spiritually. Sure, there is much uncertainly surrounding God's existence; however, I am comfortable saying that I believe in Him for my own reasons. the belief gives me a sense of hope...a sense that I can turn to someone/thing in certain times. I do NOT believe everything in the bible as I feel much of it was influenced by human "error" (if you will). but the basic message is still the same. (cont again! =S)
Ok...me, being a Christian myself (with an open mind, hence why I am here...) have something to say here just from what I have witnessed in my own personal experiences. The major issue with Christianity today is the evangelists. they blow everything out of proportion, stuff scripture down your throat, and basically scare the crap out of ppl to influence others to "get saved". (to be continued...sorry lol)
@runwithtruth OK...so perhaps I use the wrong wording. Although yes, Evangelists are the worse thing to happen in Christianity (imho). Yet many Christians I know hang on their every word. I intended to refer to the...overzealous if you will. I'm of the opinion that we should just accept each other's choices, and leave the judgements to God, flying spaghetti monster, or whatever. Why do we all have to bring out the ugly in BOTH sides and tear each other apart? it's unnecessary...
@runwithtruth and furthermore, it's behavior like the kind you possess on this forum that TURN PEOPLE AWAY FROM CHRISTIANITY! it's that holier than thou attitude that get us Christians mocked. You are essentially fueling their fire. it's embarrassing. For a faith that believes in acceptance and not passing judgements i found im surrounded by a sea of hypocrisy. However, I still believe in God because I have my OWN relationship with him and not anyone elses. food for thought.
Tell me atheism isn't a dark religion! The reasoning of this guy only demonstrates the ignorance of atheisms' new leaders. The shell game he plays is just another way of teaching mental gymnastics and smoke screen tactics to people who are too lazy to seek the Truth.
@Buck2120 No, but I can certainly see the makings of another 12 step program. I was waiting for him to get the students to arrange the chairs in a circle so they could all share their stories about how they were victimized by the "believers". The only thing missing is the kool-aid!
The bitterness he has towards the Word of God is clearly projected as a response to the subjective realities he endured as a religious person.
"They went out from us, but they were not of us" (1John 2:19)
@runwithtruth Keep on drinking the crazy juice! Maybe one day you'll find reason! You watched this video so that certainly means you are curious. Oh and a word to the wise, Bible quotes are meaningless. Much to your probable horror I was also a Christian and read the book many times. My favorite verse is Deuteronomy 21:18-21 - great Xtian "morals". When you worship a disgusting, morbid and downright evil character your true "moral" behavior seeks through. Christianity = Immorality
@Buck2120 It's up to you...But I would recommend you dump the kool-aid and the bitterness you are expressing in exchange for the living waters Jesus spoke of! You know where he mentioned them don't you?
Why would Deuteronomy 21:18-21 be your favourite? Would it be a reflection of the bitter treatment you experienced by religious people you know? Stoning isn't done any more...get with the program! :-)
One of my favourites: "If the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed" (John 8:36) :-)
@runwithtruth No I love that verse because when I quote it at you guys you all pathetically try to defend your irrational political dogma. I hope you find reason before it is too late. You'll find some great free thinking videos here on YouTube. I encourage you to utilize them. Ignorance is bliss!
@Buck2120 What is there to defend?...Yes I have seen these "free thinking" videos. My take: I cannot help but see the irrational and ignorantly based arguments as anything less than smoke screens and delusional justification of man wanting to walk in his own lusts...But hey...If you folks wish to pull the victim card to justify your lack of intelligent seeking for the Truth...who am I to judge?
I understand your arguments, being an ex-christian atheist too, but the Old Testament isn't the only place in the Bible where it says homosexuality is an abomination. Paul states in the New Testament that homosexuality is a sin (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). So if Christians only listen to the New Testament, then homosexuality is still a grevious sin.
@LobarRobotic Sorry...I must correct you...it is the act of homosexuality. A person born with homosexual tendencies is not committing sin until he or she chooses to act upon them. It's the act that leads to sin...just as the act of the alcoholic or drug addict.
@runwithtruth Yeah I figured that. I posted this because it seemed TTA was meaning that their is nothing wrong with being homosexual or acting upon it at all. Would you consider to men kissing a sin?
@runwithtruth ok cool. i just wanted to see what you felt about. My original still stands because I get the feeling TTA was referring to whether gays and gay couples were a sin. I'm pretty sure most homosexual people will end up acting on their feelings in their lives, even if it only means a cuddle and a kiss. And runwithtruth.... *sends a kiss on the lips ;) xoxo
@runwithtruth oh... I thought you were hinting that there was a spark between us. I was obviously wrong... Although, I'd like to steal a kiss from you in real life... xD
I'm not sure if the Americans shares the same values as i do. But if someone (mostly Christians) really DO have family values, this is wt it SHOULD be!
"We come together, not to become one, but to understand each other."
My parents were Atheists/Pagans. I converted, but they still love me (my brother showed some resistance becuz he knew wt's going on, but he behaved normally). Now I deconvert, they didnt know it (not even my brother), and my family still loves me!
Nothing is more valuable than ur own family. This is wt I learned from my decoversion. I didnt deconvert becuz of them, but i just know wt love is becuz i deconverted.
Hear what God of Israel YAHUSHUA-YAHUWAH (Son and Father are ONE) saying to our generation by His chosen prophets: Trumpetcallofgodonline. com ; Letter called "Purify Your Faith, and Come to the Father as It is Written": EXCERPT: "Only in the Bible and through these very Letters, of which I have given to My prophet of the end of this age, shall you find Him and know Him."
I sit downtown with a whiteboard sometimes, with a theological or philosophical question on it. People are free to walk up and inquire, converse, discuss, or debate. Several have commented on the perceived "irony" of my name being "Thomas." My brother was named, "Andrew John."
Seth, my least favorite version of the Bible is the New Living Translation. They smoothed over all those pesky horrible and immoral things Jesus said throughout the New Testament. It caused a lot of problems when trying to show someone how bad Jesus was and they keep bringing up the New Living Translation. Pretty soon, the Bible will just have whole verses completely edited out.
@AliceEis but it is already so! let aside all the apocrypha books.. (which I find to be proof enough it is all bullshit) do you really think in over 3000 years the "translations" still have *something* in common with the original text? :|
@iz2sicc Well my list of favorite thinkers extends far beyond the three that I mentioned and does include deGrasse and Kaku, but for the sake of a "trinity" I had to narrow it down to those three.
I actually think I prefer this format, Seth. It seems more welcoming, as though I'm sitting as usual back in the crowd, with some of the audience in front of me and the speaker and slides also in my view. I wouldn't mind if you used it, again. As for your talk, you outdid yourself! It was excellent. Thank you for all your work.
@NotMuchNU Excellent dodo talk! Seth projects all his negative neurological associations...does this sound like the positive universe you are accustomed to? Seth is lying!!!
What is the purpose of preaching to the choir? Might as well get an Organist to play while you pause for Amens. I found this after reading a story about people getting letters in their mailboxes about the "true Pagan meaning behind their Christmas lights", etc. Is this your purpose? Isn't that kind of... evangelistic? I happen to agree with you on everything. I just don't see the point in this.
@rswingman Atheist gatherings allow free-thinkers to come together and exchange ideas. It provides information and food for thought, so that the audience can be more effective in their own debate circles. It provides the content in an entertaining way. And as the video is available on YouTube, it provides the religious and non-religious alike the opportunity to view and evaluate. You think we shouldn't present our information to atheist and theist alike for fear of "evangelizing?"
@TheThinkingAtheist Whats to debate within your own fold? You all agree. I consider myself Agnostic & was amused by this. Remember, I found this as a result of tracking down who was behind the flyers in the mailboxes of people with Christmas lights in Hudsonville MI (google it), telling them how they're actually Pagans and not the Christians they think they are. I don't know if that's your MO, but I found it pretty tacky & reverse-evangelistic.
@TheThinkingAtheist Way I see it, the ability to take any shaped peg (set of circumstances), cram it into a round hole ("It's God's will") and proclaim that it fits perfectly (ala Suzie) is a mental disorder that can't be debated. Barring the total abolition of religion, I don't see that changing any time soon. I don't waste my time on them. Though I struggle to find the sense in it, I've got no problem with this. Just curious to get your take on the flyer story.
@rswingman I don't get it, are you saying the immensely positive deconversion i got from lutheran deepheld faith by the efforts of activist atheism is a waste of time? Debate was what worked for me in becoming an atheist and for how many countless others?
@TheThinkingAtheist "You have been weighed in the balances and been found wanting" !
@rswingman Atheists must organize to overcome the prejudice of religious zeal. If a believer is a true believer than they cannot escape the fear of supernatural consequences. Christians are more afraid of critical thinking than any religious proselytizing.
All I ever asked of them (the religious) is to leave me alone. I'll lead by example and leave them alone. I'd feel like dropping a smug history lesson on the Pagan origins of their Christmas lights & wreaths in their mailbox would go against that principle. I don't feel especially oppressed neither. I don't care to join any club that would have me as a member.
@buck2120 don't try to act like religious people are the problem when they aren't following their religion correctly... "love your neighbor as yourself" "forgive your enemies" etc and pretend that atheists are saints! The screen format works reeeally well. Find myself thinking 'huh... this makes a whole lot of visually-appealing sense!' More video's should be like this, excellent solution to an oft encountered challenge. Of course, not everyone has multiple camera's with them at such events. Nevertheless, well done! Will now proceed to watch the rest of the video.

A question for humanity. In a world where there's no proof of God's existence or of life after death; how will you explain to your children why you brought them into the world and why they will have to die?

@1Makyo "ATHEISM = THE CHURCH OF BIGOTRY"
Yes. I am an atheist, and I am a bigot.
I am intolerant of intolerance.
I do not, for example, tolerate:
The view that slavery was ever endorsed by God (Leviticus 25:44-46).
The view that women are inferior to men (1 Timothy 2:11-14).
Putting people to death because of what they believe (Deuteronomy 13:6-10)
"" who they sleep with (Romans 1:26-32)
Hell, the fact that there was ever a death penalty for working on the Sabbath is bad enough...

@themediocrenontheist Just curious dude.By what standard do you define evil?
1Makyo 1 month ago
@1Makyo Are you familiar with Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs? Sentient beings have not only basic physiological needs to fulfill, but also advanced psychological needs. My morality is derived purely from an ethical standpoint, in the sense that any actions which cause physical or emotional anguish to a conscious being are generally "wrong." My credo is simply "do not harm; do help." If it is conducive to the flourishing of conscious creatures, it is "good." If destructive to them, it is "bad."
themediocrenontheist 1 month ago
@themediocrenontheist I'm sure you have an "answer" for everything, but I will play a lttle anyway.
Dogs have parents.. At least mentors. There is a mentoring process for most creatures on earth , sentient or not. I personally don't think homosexuals are sentient beings, but that is another story. Aside from heuristic experiences, and instinct and mentoring, which is, after all, what religion is, how would you know if one likes cock in his mouth or his ass?

AlphaCrucis 1 month ago
@1Makyo The reason most atheists speak up is because of those of faith that try to push their beliefs system on everyone else. They do it very publicly and very vocally. When they try to get laws in place or get the government to do things that line up with their faith, those that don't agree can and should speak up. For those like you that are intolerant of anything against your beliefs, well you can deal with it or stop pushing your crap on society as a whole.

Singinsista04 1 month ago
Ok...me, being a Christian myself (with an open mind, hence why I am here...) have something to say here just from what I have witnessed in my own personal experiences. The major issue with Christianity today is the evangelists. they blow everything out of proportion, stuff scripture down your throat, and basically scare the crap out of ppl to influence others to "get saved". (to be continued...sorry lol)
Singinsista04 1 month ago
@Singinsista04 what evangelists?....If it is the TV evangelists they are ungodly. self promoting, and money hungry! They need the Lord Jesus christ!
runwithtruth 1 month ago
@runwithtruth OK...so perhaps I use the wrong wording. Although yes, Evangelists are the worse thing to happen in Christianity (imho). Yet many Christians I know hang on their every word. I intended to refer to the...overzealous if you will. I'm of the opinion that we should just accept each other's choices, and leave the judgements to God, flying spaghetti monster, or whatever. Why do we all have to bring out the ugly in BOTH sides and tear each other apart? it's unnecessary...
Singinsista04 1 month ago
@runwithtruth and furthermore, it's behavior like the kind you possess on this forum that TURN PEOPLE AWAY FROM CHRISTIANITY! it's that holier than thou attitude that get us Christians mocked. You are essentially fueling their fire. it's embarrassing. For a faith that believes in acceptance and not passing judgements i found im surrounded by a sea of hypocrisy. However, I still believe in God because I have my OWN relationship with him and not anyone elses. food for thought.
Singinsista04 1 month ago

The bitterness he has towards the Word of God is clearly projected as a response to the subjective realities he endured as a religious person.

LobarRobotic 1 month ago
@LobarRobotic Sorry...I must correct you...it is the act of homosexuality. A person born with homosexual tendencies is not committing sin until he or she chooses to act upon them. It's the act that leads to sin...just as the act of the alcoholic or drug addict.

Seth, my least favorite version of the Bible is the New Living Translation. They smoothed over all those pesky horrible and immoral things Jesus said throughout the New Testament. It caused a lot of problems when trying to show someone how bad Jesus was and they keep bringing up the New Living Translation.

I don't know if that's your MO, but I found it pretty tacky & reverse-evangelistic.
