The diamond cartel (De Beers) keeps the price of diamonds artificially high; so these "blood diamonds" are valuable for thugs, gangs, revolutionaries, etc. In addition, the mining of diamonds is VERY dangerous work that is also environmentally destructive.

I suppose that all diamonds are "blood diamonds in one form or another.

I am from Canada, we have a lot of diamonds. Not all diamonds are blood diamonds. We laser on all of our diamonds a very small polar bear or loon on our diamonds, to show where the diamond came from and how it is not a blood diamond. So if your diamond has an extremely small polar bear on it, you can rest easy at night knowing that the diamond was mined by a well paid worker. Not all diamonds are blood diamonds.

After I saw the movie "Blood Diamond" I was just shocked, and vowed that I will NEVER buy or wear diamonds. It's been well over a year since I swore that, and my stance hasn't changed one bit. It's sickening how many lives are taken and ruined for them. I told my boyfriend to never think about getting me diamonds! If someone is going to spend an obscene amount of money on me, at least give me something that I can use, and not just flashy jewelery that makes it more likely for me to get robbed.

There's a VAST difference between the slavery and murder as illustrated in the Blood Diamond and simply paying the going rate for labour regardless of the diamond value. The true cause of the poverty is lack of law and order (corruption) and of a stable economy. That's all that's required for the poor to pull themselves out, saving for their children's health and education, building capital etc. Going anti-capitalist is to attack the only mechanism that can raise those living standards.
