@mykrole The ending of the US show buggered the whole story up in my opinion. I know a lot of people liked it, but to me, it was weak, rushed writing. WHich is a shame, because I like to see how the Americans interpret british stories.
this was a damn good show and fekkin abc definitely DESTROYED THEIR OWN RATINGS by continuously CHANGING THE DAY IT WAS ON.--NYC 1973 !!!! no yuptards,no messicans ,no aRabs NO BLOOMBOIG- !........
Why do people hate this? It's not even the same show as the UK version. I prefer the UK version, but the US version did pretty good until the last five minutes.
This sucked, the ending was the final touch to end this mess, Gene Hunt looks extremely cheesy, ABC missed the entre point of the Storyline of the series, it has nothing to do with actually going to Mars, Sam Tyler was hit by a car, ended up in a coma went back in time, not space simulation thats so unoriginal, how the hell could it go from Coma to Simualtion, it confuses me so much. This is the reason why our shows shouldn't be switched.
I <3 life on mars,,x Im english so personally i love the english one more because its more orginal than the american, and gene hunt in the english one is fantastic,,x I love season 2 ending in the english one but the american one seemed a bit rushed and completly irrelevent to the series,,x I also dont like the annie in the american one,, She seems a bit too good looking to be a police women she looks like a hollywood actress !!!
With all of the comparisons between the US and UK versions, the US version was suprisingly good; though I agree with everyone in that the US ending was completely unexpected. Hopefully theyll have an alternate ending in the DVD set.

The three shows you mentioned were all reality TV shows, they were shit to begin with. I don't know why people feel the need to watch thoses souless excuses for entertainment but they do.
This show was good, but it felt like it was wrapped up in the last epidsode. This show was amazing, but they canceled it to quickly, I believe it could have lasted one more season.
Ah! Now this is a little better than the other US version trailer thats on elsewhere on Youtube, that was diabolical and ( I think ) only had Harvey Keitel on at the end ( and wait til you see THAT ending!) but this is passable- however any Brit like me, and as much as I like (slightly too old for this though) Mr.Keitel, who loves the original Life on Mars- will wince in memory of our incredible Gene Hunt (played to perfection by Philip Glenister) lets say 'C' for effort!
Regardless of where the series came from, I'm very sad that the US series didn't last. It's a kick in the gut to me. I'm making my way through the British series now, so at least I have that to watch.
My question is why the hell are British watching our versions of the remakes when they know they'll probably be offended in the first place?
No one's forcing you to watch it. And I can promise that comments such as yours aren't going to turn off the true fans of this show. I've never seen the U.K. version and I don't intend to. And although I'm not agreeing with all of the recent shows being U.K. remakes, this one totally blew me away.
Gretchen Moll looks better with dark hair as scene on the final episode and in the Betty Page story. She is a talented actress. Look forward to seeing her in more projects on TV and the movies. The ending was like on Space Odyssey when they sleep thru their journey. Wish it was more Twin Peakish or Twighlight Zone like, more of a strange mystery than a dream. I loved how they were in 1973. I was six back then and this brings back faded memories of the time. I want to see the UK version.
The actors were great. Keitel is a great actor and glad to have seen him on a network TV show. They cast him well. O'mara is a good actor. Never seen him before this. He's from Ireland and he did a fabulous job of speaking as if he's American. A lot of actors from Australia and the UK and Ireland can't do a convincing US accent and you hear their native accent thru their supposed US accent and O'Mara did a great job of it. Michael Imperioli very talented. Love Gretchen. She's talented.
I never watched the UK original version of it but how many seasons was the UK original? Is it still on the air in the UK or did it end? If it ended was the ending the same for the US as the UK version? I was disappointed in the ending of this series. It was just a dream while he was hibernating on his way up to Mars. It was not a good twist. If the show lasted longer would have had a different ending more of a twist or a shocker. That is if it's ended diff than the UK show.
The original UK version was on for 2 Series (seasons) although they were short seasons and in total the UK version has I believe 1 less episode than the American version. (17 episodes us, 16 UK). The show also ended completely differently. I'm not gonna give away spoilers. Go watch it. Its very good. Its here on Youtube. Just look up a guy by the name of ZackMallory. In fact some of the lines from the first episode of the uk series are used in the US. series.
Two UK series were made - each of 8 full one-hour episodes (we don't get commercials on the BBC) - so effectively, in terms of running time - each series was about 12 US episodes worth.
There was none of this hibernation going to Mars crap for the UK series (I'll not give it away, but it's much better)
Then there was a new series called Ashes to Ashes starring a female lead but set in the 80s, same supporting cast mainly (including Gene Hunt).
I just read all of the comments. Amazing how the Brits seem to whine about any and everything. You Brits need to relax a little bit and just enjoy the upcoming last 2 episodes for what they are....ENTERTAINMENT. If you want to whine, try whining about your high taxes, your high unemployment or your socialist government. Geeeez.....
I dont know what all the arguing is about, but I am very sad the American version was canceled here in the United States by ABC. I loved this show about an NYC detective who finds himself back in 1973. It was a great show and sadly, ABC didn't give it time to find an audience. They would rather put up more brainless, garbage reality shows like Dancing With the Stars, Deal...No Deal, or American Idol. No wonder the Big 4 American networks are losing viewers. This show will be missed!
As a British person, seeing this is more of a culture shock than Sam Tyler ever had going back to 1973. It's like some weird parody. A lot of the humour and interest of the original is in the props and the colour schemes, and the clothes, the architecture, the cars... I can see that US viewers wouldn't understand our series any more than we'd understand their version. Really weird.
Are u sure? I know quite a few LOM UK fans from the US who got the detail of the aesthetic.
Also,I'm Australian, and 1973 Manchester looks quite a lot different from the 1973 Brisbane I grew up in,but enough commonalities in Western fashion existed that I could relate.
If it wasn't for the fact that he travels back in time I wouldn't really be all the interested in this show. The stories are good but just not done all that well. The show is rather bland if you ask me. Take away the Sci Fiction part and you don't have much of a show. I can't see this show lasting that long. It pains me to say this because I love this sort of stuff its right up my alley, so it hurts me to dislike this show so much. Even though Im in the US I think the Brits version is better.
With lack of a region 1 DVD, most people here would be lucky to see the original on BBC America - with significant edits (so is it really the original?). I think we should cut US viewers some slack. What they see is a pretty good show, with a couple overly preachy episodes.
guys-u need to buy a region free player. At less than 100 bux,TOTALLY worth it! I live in Australia (Region 4),and I order Region 2 DVDs from the UK,and Region 1 discs from the US all the time, usually from amazon.
Also pc media players like VLC Player will play ALL regions.
People, forget regions! With the right DVD player or pc media player,it's a worry of the past!
There are some shows like LOM UK that are too good to miss for a small detail like this.
Ok, I am a BIG fan of our (english) LOM, so I thought I would download and watch the US version. No Its not as good but I totally enjoyed it. It started to find its feet by episode 6. Shame its been canceled. I guess it was too clever for americans! Worth watching folks.
Not only have the Yanks ripped off and butchered the most beautiful language on earth - English, but now they've done the same with one of our best-ever cop shows! Have they no shame? LOL
Well I guess this is why this version is made for American and not Brits and the original is made for Brits and not Americans. Meaning of course you're not going to like this version if your a Brit. It wasn't made for you to like. And there is absolutely no way the original version would work in America, no matter how good it is.
I'm an American who happens to like the UK version (although I am catching it after seeing all of the US version and am only on episode 1 of the UK version). I enjoy both versions for what they are. A GREAT COP SHOW with a Sci fi twist.
ok... i'm actually crying... how could they do this, it's not 'based on' it's ripped off, i mean 'don't waltz into my kindom acting king of the jungle' is word for word... what's inventive about that... be inspired, not copy. Anyway atleast the money they paid for the rights went towards some good new BBC drama
Hi, Look at it this way. It's great writing. So why try to improve on it? Please bear in mind that television in America is about maximum profit. Why would they spend lots of money on re-writing something that's already good and chance coming up with lines that are not as good? It's all about money my friend.
very true... atleast it's not on my tv... so i can ignore it's existance unless it becomes good... wich i sadlyhighly doubt... sorry to anyone who likes this version, but i see why phil glenister ran a mile whenthey asked him to be in this version
It may have been part of the contract that it can't be re-written. Which would make it odd though, because many of the words and phrases in the script are very UK-centric and wouldn't make sense over there
oh my efing god its annoying america take all of those beautifully acted amazingly produced shows and turn them into rubbish. all there shows sound the same so over dramaic hollywood styled "i have to save its the only way" kind of thing. wat the hell is with annie in the US version she looks like a tart wih bleached blonde hair Annie in Uk was awsome, she was cute but in her own way sexy and defiant and emotional. arrrrghhhhh UK VERSION IS THE BEST
Agreed.Annie in the UK version looked real world pretty, not Hollywood pretty. The kind of girl next door you want to take home to mum. The annie of the US version was too Hollywood glam.
this is too much. Life on Mars UK was beautifully underdone, it will forever be a classic. i wonder why the idea must be recycled and worn out by this remake. nonetheless, Life on Mars original will stay a classic no matter what.
Good God. It looks like all they've changed is the cast, the setting, and switched the nice dark cinematography for a horrible yellow filter. Hooray for creativity.
O; I miss this show tooooooooo much.

well... very true... we'll just see how it goes down with the American viewers

This is sad - why re-make this when you change nothing, nada, rien.... argh.
When I heard there would be a US version, I at least thought they would come up with new story lines and lines.

Good God. It looks like all they've changed is the cast, the setting, and switched the nice dark cinematography for a horrible yellow filter. Hooray for creativity.
