  • Technically this is far harder than it sounds. What's so amazing about Rubinstein is that his technical mastery is so superb he does not seem to need to give it a second thought, but is free to devote his entire attention to matters of tempo, shading, etc. No one does these things better, in my not-so-humble opinion.

  • My favorite is his Grand Polonaise ... which depicts nostalgia felt by someone out of his country ... or probably forced out of his country ... the way Chopin puts it is extremely well interpreted by Artur. I would play his interpretation in any event concerning memories of my country ..

    Sami Khoury

  • GregS ... agreed ...

    Sami Khoury

  • Artur Rubinstein was the BEST at Chopin.

In the 21st Century there are technically more accomplished players, but no one has more SOUL in their interpretation of the music. Thank Heavens we have these recordings of THE MASTER at work.

  • I think Horowitz playing live was as close to a "divine experince" you could ever get!

I also enjoy Rubinstein, but he is not as "diabolic" as Horowitz.

  • I also consider Wilhelm Kempff to be one of the greatest.

  • don't forget Maurizio Pollini...Rubinstein himself said Pollini is a master! :)

  • well, in that list you've left out Barenboim, Ashkenazy, Volodos and Lang Lang

  • Naxos has recently released the whole recital on DVD. It's an All-Chopin recital with the exception of encores.

  • technique, tempo, sound. absolutely perfect! it's difficult choose the best pianist ever lived. we have so many different opinions. but however rubinstein, horowitz, richter, lipatti, gilels, argerich, yundi li, berezovsky, blechacz, zimmerman and the others are miracles

  • ,,,,,,,and don't forget Godowski and Kissin!

  • oops! In my opinion, Kissin is the best!

  • Thank you for this exceptional video!5*****

  • What a relief

  • Rubinstein rend ici une interprétation magique de ce chef d'oeuvre.

  • definitivamente la interpretacion de la barcarolle de Rubinstein es insuperable

  • What a bold and awesome interpretation! I feel my whole body shivering at around 4:00!!! He is really too good.

  • Amazing, love this so much, Rubinstein is great !

  • I love Rubinstein! Such a great pianist...thanks for the post! It´s already posted on youtube, but this is worth to be posted thousands of times :D This interpretation is one of the best I´ve heard

  • I love how Rubinstein lets his fingers do the talking. There's none of the flashy histrionics of other pianists. In fact, his head never moves. Nice to see footage of such a historic and monumental artist displaying his perfection.

  • thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou thankyou

  • Rubinstein was truly a master.

  • A historic and phenomenal performance - does anyone know where and when it was recorded?

  • his grandson was my violin teacher 8]

  • really??

    your'e so lucky!!

if my piano teacher wasn't pulling my leg, then I am 3 generations of teching since Tchaikovsky!

    (my techer's teacher's teacher)

and my other piano teacher said that I am 8 generations of teaching away from beethoven!

i believe the first one more though...

  • Master Rubinstein changes music into beauty

  • The greatest performance ever of this piece.

  • strongly agree!!! his chopin is the most beautiful and marvellous. no one can compare!! he reveals the ture and whole Chopin!

  • Yes indeed. He plays it really heart-felt, but also in a very natural way, he never lies or over-does anything, everything falls naturally in it´s place when he plays (or played, actually). When I hear recordings of him I often feel convinced that there´s no other way to play that what he´s playing.

  • Rubenstein remains the greatest pianist ever. His performanes of Chopin, Brahms, Liszt, Beethoven, (and all the others!) remain the best on record. The alleged masters of today can't hold a candle to his mastery of the music. Perfect tempos, tasteful interpretations... that's what we love!

  • @GregS1225 There are not the best pianists ever, there weren't the best pianists in the world and there will not be the best pianists in the world . Yeah even Rubinstein says that in his one of his interviews, or if not him, Horowitz.... but sure, he was an amazing pianist.

  • Technically perfect but I prefer any of Richter's versions.

    I can't help it((

  • do you know when he performed this piece?

  • Magnificent. Beautiful. I loved it. Thank you so much!

  • Loved it!

  • IIRC, this is from Rubinstein's 1964 Moscow recital.

  • Thank you-for clearing the boards-this is a treasure indeed

  • Thank you

  • Magnificent! It's great to see the great Arthur Rubinstein playing this Chopin piece! Thank you for posting!
