@zeppelin67637 - I'm not sure who the manufacturer is. I had them installed 4 years ago by a company names "Solar City". They installed them for free and I was saving 30% off my bill the very first month. I had to pay them monthly, until I decided to just purchace them at a reduced price last year. Now that I own them I save 60%. I even sell electricity to the power company. I'm thinking about upgrading with more panels so I can actually get paid every month.

you can file for protection.. but unless you spend a least $1 to $3 Million to file in China and Hong Kong (2 different offices and protections even though its the same country) and all the ohter jurisdictions you will not be protected. That is the game, that is why General Electric comes up with the ideas here and files else where for protection. I wont even begin to discuss the Tax issues. America is screwed from the inside out.

This depends on what protection you are seeking. Most patents are defensive. You don't care if someone else uses the idea so long as they are unable to stop you from doing so. Once you've invested in market development and production etc. you do NOT want someone being able to tell you to stop. However, if someone else is infringing your patent, you may or may not care. E.g., sometimes a competitor legitimizes a marketplace, so you ignore the infringement.
