Can't really say it sounds just like the Uilleann pipes, although it sort of brings the pipes to mind. Plus it just sounds really cool, so props to you for that.
One more question. I just ordered the POG2 (I already have the Soul Preacher) and am anxiously awaiting its arrival! I will have to use my old reverb for a while until I can get the Cathedral unit. My question is this... Do you put the pedals for the pipe organ set up in front of the amp or in the effects loop of the amp?
Thanx again! This has inspired me to learn Toccata and I am going to play it on the pipe organ with my Guitar!
Love vid 9 with the cathedral organ. I have 2 Qs. At one time in the late 70s up to the early 90s, there were rack mount effects (phasers and flangers) that had the dynamic range to handle mixes from the board. Is there anything like a Roland Studio series from EH that would handle a drum mix? Second, for guitar, is there any way to switch say from using a metal muff to one of your signal chains on the fly without having two amps or a two channel amp?
Bill ... you should be in a super group like Dream Theater! Awesome!
Or with Mike Oldfield. Fantastic! My wife really liked the tracks! I got those Eddie Van Halen chills he talks about all the time when he describes an inspired track he's composed.
I think Bill captures the essence of this instrument, the uilleann pipes are all about feeling (imo being new to this inst.) and that's what music is about. EHX have just introduced me to a new instrument! Great :-) Beautiful.
I know this is probably sacrilege to the pedal connoisseur but can you get those sounds out of one of those mega multi-effect floor units. I love everything you do, and I'm an EHX maniac, but bringing all those pedals to a gig would be prohibitive. Is there one of those POD boards that can do all that stuff with just one floor unit?
Hey, I'm EHX all the way though. My DMM is the greatest pedal I've ever owned.
They did the HolyStain which had a bunch of effects in one box.
Maybe in the future they will go that way, I hope so.There are a boat load of multi boxes out the that do great stuff but some how EHX always
comes up with stuff that goes a bit beyond what the others do. Maybe get a multi box to do the generic stuff like comp-delay ect and save the space for the unique EHX stuff.
Thanks. Totally agree that EHX always comes up with the best sounds. You are right though -- if they could come up with one of those multi-floor boxes, it would probably be a big seller. I just hate having too many pedals to mess with at a live gig. My Little Big Muff with my amp (that has delay and verb already) gives me a classic sound, so I really just use one pedal at performances. It's so easy.
@Effectology That's exactly what I'm trying to do with the TC Electronics G System... I'm going to have either/one/all of the POG, HOG, or MicroSynth in the loops while the G System handles the delay/verb/comp/drive (i have the nova drive w it). Any suggestions on which one would be the most versatile starter between the POG, HOG, or MicroSynth?
@davidleinweber I dont think theres anything else that can do what the POG and HOG do. Ive seen at least one other polyphonic octave pedal, but it didnt do what the POG does.
The Roland VG systems can do some similar things, but they require a hex pup.
LIke LongboardLucas said, I think with a little tweaking you will get a closer approximation of the tone you're after. I would suggest using a Stratocaster type guitar with the in between sounds of the 2nd or 4th toggle position to get that nasal sound and noodle with the distortion to get the right raspy reedy sound. rom there, itis all hand technique to get that close to the way a piper uses his hands to accent the notes.......
The strat pickup position you mentioned would not have made that big of a difference using the spectral gate filter. The particular sound I was emulating was not that raspy but very smooth and melodic.
Pretty great! The drums are awesome and man, the pipes were cool. That's a tricky one though, trying to play a stringed instrument like pipes. Seems like the distortion could have been tweaked a bit more for that kind of raw reed sound, and maybe a bit more attack? I know you gotta cut out the plucking, but it's not like pipe notes have slow attack... Great sounds whatever the case!
Could the pipe effect be pulled off with a pog2 or micro pog instead of a HOG?
Also, what were the settings on the memory man and the POG2/HOG?
Shybee89 3 months ago
@Shybee89 You could try the POG2 it might work fine.
If you go to the video description there is a link to the EHX form where all the settings are posted.

I use a clean fender tone for the amp.
Just clean and neutral or flat.

@amourdutigre
Yes in front of the amp with a very clean amp setting.
If I were to use the effects loop I would put just the Cathedral reverb in the loop.
The Soul Preacher and Pog2 keep in front.
Good luck and have fun!

nice guitar design. I too have an Ibanez. but i don't really like the tremolo arm. it doesn't really give much vibrato when i bend notes slightly. =(

@amourdutigre Thanks Man
Yes several of the EHX prdals will handle stereo line levels.
The Stereo memory Man delay and the Cathedral reverb pedals as well as the rack mount Bi-Filter and NY-2A compressor.
the LPB2ube seemed happy at line level as well.
For switching in and out of effect chains I would look at loop selector pedals.
There are many of them on the market that do very many things.

Thanks,
The sound I was after was not a typical pipes sound but one from a recording by Davy Spillane called Midnight Walker.
The Guitar is a 1988 Ibanez JEM guitar.

This guitar sound was based on a performance by Davy Spillane called Midnight Walker.
I believe it captured a bit of that sound.
Perhaps its a not stereotypical uilleann pipes sound but a beautiful one i wanted to explore using the guitar.

Bill, as an Irish piper myself (and a guitarist), I'd enjoy hearing you play in the range of the pipes to hear what those affects sound like!

I did take liberties and play the top note an octave
higher than the pipes played by him.
