@samholdsworth I can't tell whether you're joking or not, but just in case, NO THEY DID NOT, that is a complete myth!

The guy bought it after extensive negotiations, and there are even photos of him examining the bridge and working out how to transport it, so he knew perfectly well what bridge he was buying!

I can assure you, it is nothing more than a rumour. Yes, it's a well known rumour, but it is a complete myth.

@athull08 Thanks for comment! Of course I know about this amazing story. And in this case I was trying to tell about this bridge. Its unbeilevable. America has a number of replicas of Old World wonders, some quite impressive, but this is a rare instance in which we nabbed the real thing...  or.... may be I dont understand you... What is the myth?

@laurag131 The myth is that Robert McCulloch, the man who bought it, actually thought he was buying Tower Bridge.

Tower Bridge is the next bridge downstream of where London Bridge was.

But there is no truth in that at all. He knew perfectly well which bridge he was buying,
