  • There is no debate or doubt- Jeff Lynne is a genius.

  • I wish he would have asked more questios about the "album" - that should have been New World Record - after Face The Music". I think NWR was their best album. Nice interview.

  • Hes like Noel Gallaghers dad

  • Love watching old footage like this, especially when u realise the material they discuss went on to be such classics!

  • @Nicap2 Please, GO do you're trolling somewhere else! You can't be serious! Yeah, Roy Wood was great, but he quit ELO during the recording of the second album. Jeff rode his coattails? Really?? Is that why Jeff declined the first time Roy asked him to join the Move? Roy asked him a second time, and then the only reason Jeff joined was because they were interested in forming a totally different band altogether (ELO). RW would never have been able to take ELO where JL did.

  • @Nicap2 What an idiotic comment.

  • The 70s.. times were so simple back then. Even though I wasn't alive! haha!

  • It is strange to see Jeff without his shades. Good interview!

  • @jimidee33 Yes! I was thinking that too. Is it really him???!

  • Off his head lol

  • America Rocks, and when we do,It's to Jeff and the Boys...

  • There's just something about the way he smiling and laughing during that interview that was just so adorable, and I like the fact that he didn't try to hide his eyes behind sunglasses. Didn't need to. He was gorgeous! :-D

  • jeff is not gay he has two daughters and is or was married

  • @briabba123 WAS married. He currently has a girlfriend he's been seeing for about 7 years now.

  • I think he looks gorgeous in this interview!

  • Those of you on here who've been leaving gay-sex comments about Jeff Lynne: Are you all mad at him or something???? What -- did you try to make your secret feelings known to him with hopes that he would sleep with you, only to have him refuse your sexual advances???? And now are you trying to get even with him, stupidly thinking that you have any chance at all of turning his fans against him???? Your type really IS the lowest form of bacteria.

  • Damn he's packin on the pounds here

  • @jeffcocks40 Yeah! he looks 40 pounds plus here!

  • @jeffcocks40

He spent too much time in America and eating like Americans.

  • @thatmuse76 lol Having fun shoving those hamburgers and fat twinkies down his throat.

  • ew the guy interviewing him was freaky

  • @Marion133 "Whispering" Bob Harris

  • @TheMightyHC Yeah, ew.

  • jeffs a great talent..great musician, arranger and a terrific producer..the best album mccartney made in years was "flaming pie" with jeff lynne co-producing....what i cant understand is why paul did not make another cd with jeff...he blows away the producers he's used since...

  • very good interviev Jeff and the years with 28 Wow.genial

  • That hair. It never changes. It's the same 34 years later.

  • Idiots!!! Jeff is a genius and is beautiful. If you don't like what you see, move on.

  • @tuppy20 Yes, (the) Move - on!

  • love elo but also love alcatraz electro , the band with 100 synths

  • @WiccansEatShit I know, thats crazy. Only Jeff can take that, hes so fucking gay

  • had a big crush on him when I was a teenager, some of my gfs and me thought he was a fox

  • 0:52 - Dr Who?

  • That is definitely one of the more relaxed interviews I have seen or heard with Jeff. I have a radio transcription disc interview with Jim Ladd where he literally had to pry longer answers out of Jeff. I'd have thought he'd be more relaxed in a radio studio setting than on camera.

  • No point in playing Britain if its crap. So many great bands have encountered 'the Britain is shitty' problem - run away!

  • How I would just love to run my fingers through Jeff's hair!

  • The host is a remedy for insomnia. ZZZZZZZZZZ.....

  • "Whispering Bob" creeps me out. Jeff seems very uncomfortable here, though very funny. Still I just love this video and watch it often. Thanks for posting it.

  • Whispering Bob called them the "Average white band". LOL

  • Man, I love this guy! I had no idea ELO was not that big in the UK!

  • Jeff looks kind of annoyed after "Whispering Bob" mentions Frampton in the beginning. Like Jeff is thinking, "Are we gonna talk about ELO or bloody Frampton?" Or maybe he was just mentally searching for a response to the question?

And yes, I also think he has nice eyes.

  • That album he's working on must have been out of the blue, one of their best IMO

  • Would be nice to see jeff without his glasses more often as he has lovely eyes!

  • It's my first time I see Jeff without his glasses!!!

  • Jeff's hair back then was quite amazing. Incredible in fact. It's like a parallel universe. Things are happening in that hair. Great things.

  • @chrismac545 I love you

  • Is that a Fu Manchu he's wearing, or a goatee?

  • "Hiya David!"

Was he drunk or something? lol!

And I love that other guy - best voice ever, I reckon ;)

  • @WestiGirl I don´t know. I think the more interesting thing is that Jeff Lynne was younger more relaxed and with a sense of humor than later. Maybe he took the great fame by ANWR and OOTB too seriously. Compare earlier ELO clips to the later clips.

There IS a great difference in these facts !

  • He seems shy - nothing at all wrong with that by the way. Very talented individual.

  • He's talking about producing the next album, which would have been "A New World Record". How historic is this?

  • @JBofBrisbane Historic., yes Sir;).The magic era/peak of Jeff Lynne. The era in the mid-70s when he wrote the material for FTM, ANWR and OOTB. And this interview happened when he wrote the masterpieces of ANWR. Imagine that his head is loaded with genius music and brilliant productions. He is happy, full of energy and optimism - he just can´t wait to leave the interview and go back and finish the songs! "3 tracks completely finished"!!!. And Jeff is funny and friendly. No ego. A decent man.

  • @MrBlue366 Yeah right...read what he did to Kelly Groucott in ELO and you might adjust that opinion a little. There is another side to him. Very tight with his money!!!

  • I do not wanna be scathing...

  • "See ya man"... didn't know he could be that animated

  • I liked Humble Pie, but never got the appeal of Frampton's solo work. ELO on the other hand...I still listen to ELO!

  • 'Jeff Lynne's Eyes Are Evil' ...

great name for an album or film or even book.

Not evil of course. They look like the eyes of someone who spent a good deal of time staring at the monstrosity that was the Bull Ring in Birmingham.

    Brilliant songwriter and producer!

  • Glad to be an inspiration!.

I don't know about the "Bull Ring"

I know a Brummie of the right age, although he insists he comes from Wolverhampton!.

He has "Wolves" as a numberplate, plays Led Zep at high volume and can't wait to move to Australia!.

  • the interviewer is somewhat annoying as his voice is too weak and soft, his questions somewhat vapourous

  • That's because the interviewer is "Whispering" Bob Harris.

  • yeah extremely annoying

  • "hi david" how cool is that during an interview.

  • "I can't emphasize how good America is" Thanks Jeff we needed that-especially now!

  • I saw E.L.O live in Melbourne in 1977 when A new world record had just came out. I have to say I prefer the Roy Wood albums but there's no denying Jeff Lynne is a freakin genius. I would like to know how much they actually played live on stage. The music was extraordinarily complex.

  • if you could if it was possible to improve the beatles it would only have been possible if jeff was a member he is one of the best song writers of all time i would not like to choose between him or lennon/macarthney pure genius and more importantly he comes across as a ordinary nice man the true mark of some one special

  • Ahhh the eyes, love them.

  • We don't see his eyes very much after this.

I first saw ELO on TV in 1976 as an 8 year old,and I thought he looked like something out of Dr Who!.

I even think I hid behind the couch when Living Thing came on!.

His eyes(or rather the bags under them) seemed evil and threating.lol.

Fast forward 35 years and he looked great and perfectly normal then to me now,and I wish he never wore those bloody glasses!.

Apparently, he started wearing them as a response to criticism from his Mother!.

  • I don´t think the eyes of Jeff Lynne look evil. I think he is a very intelligent looking without his famous sun glasses.

Anyway Jeff Lynne is with Lennon and McCartney the most inportant and talented

    on pop- music composing.

By the way Jeff is in a private life very shy person so it is understood all by this.

  • Agreed, and I never meant that he was actually evil,he just seemed strange and threatening looking to an 8 year old in 1976.I know far better now!.

  • That Bob Harris is terrible at interviewing, should've got a professional in ...

  • I love ELO. Just as well really. Don't fancy the idea of getting the tattoo removed.

  • jeff lynne, before those glasses got glued to his head

  • I love ELO's music,they kick ass!

  • nice to see jeff getting interviewed - doesn't happen much. he doesn't make it too easy for the interviewer though...

  • in my eye's a talented and funny man

  • strange to see jeff so peppy, he's usually so well reserved. i guess they caught him early.

  • I think the answer is a bit different. He became reserved when ELO became highly successful. Jeff´s early works are full of fun and they were not aiming success but making good music.

I think Jeff took himself too seriously by the superstardom and the same time lost his best talent as a compuser.

  • Well, in this video he was younger and still had his hopes and dreams for ELO. He's still in his 20s here. And now, after the success, the ups, downs, and the trappings of show business he's a little older and hopefull wiser now.

  • This is the first time I see him without glasses...

  • Working in the studio next to Jeff Lynne would be a dream come true for me! Perhaps it will come to pass!

  • hmmmm next to jeff lynne. if only that could happen

  • when i say he has look's i meant when he didn't have big hair. i like him with shorter hair and a trimmed beard

  • does any other woman agree that jeff has look's or is it just me

  • I think it's because he's a little torment with a twinkle in his eye. I bet he's a real laugh to work with!

jeff if you're needing any backing singers...

  • so is that a yes to my question?. i agree about the twinkle and him being a laugh to work with

  • yes, but i like him with big hair and trimmed beard. Aw bless I think he felt out of his comfort zone at times in this interview. He's just a bloody genius isn't he. I've heard more and more of ELO on here and I love so much of it. Not to forget the contribution the rest of the originals gave!

  • he is indeed a genius and very talented

  • i think jeff has nice eye's shame we dont get to see them more

  • i think jeff look's kinda nice in this video thing

  • but then again........

This is the era of REAL musicians. Guys who knew how to play, and write their own music. steve jones wouldn't know a minor cord progression if it had overdosed in his living room.

  • The albums between the first ELO album¨

and A New World Record were really stunning. I really don´t understand why Jeff Lynne over an over again repeats that

Out of the Blue is his best work.

Not bad work. But not the best.

  • Yeah I cant figure it out either...mabye its because theres more tracks on that album than any other. Or its because of Mr. Blue Sky.

  • Well, Jeff Lynne made a bad mistake like

    we all human beings.

By the success of A New World Record he lost his best talent and a sense humour. I´m not alone with that opinion.

Out of the Blue was a MADE ALBUM. Not bad but not the quality of the earlier ELO- albums, which are REALLY GREAT.

  • I agree. And disagree. I like the early albums, but its all in perspective because ELO went through six genres (in order from oldest album to Zoom) in my perspective: Psychadelic, Hard Rock, Orchestra, Disco, Electric, and then normal Rock n' Roll.

  • What a treasure.

  • Wow thanks for this one.Jeff looks great there and he enjoyed that interview, smiling etc.

  • So that's what Jeff Lynne's eyes look like! He's always wearing shades.

  • I think Jeff Lynne lost his sense of humour

by the success of A New World Record, also musically. Here he is seen and heard when great pop music was fun to do.

  • That was always my impression. With A New World Record he found the hit formula. There was no need for more exploration - and of course he became bored, which showed increasingly.

  • I think you are absolutely right.

It´s amazing that Jeff Lynne himself

thought that Out of the Blue was his

masterpiece of his career. It´s not a

bad album and contains very good songs.

But I think Jeff Lynne was fooled by his new success and it seen and watched

in the Out of the Blue album and the pictures.

  • 2 legends!!!

  • What a top bloke. Best male vocalist ever in my humble opinion. He showed on the Zoom concert that he still has it. Awesome.

  • Jeff is a bloody genius!

  • 'No so succesful here in the UK, why do you think that is?'.. I can answer that; cos here in the UK we listen to SHIT and ignore good music. As true today as it was back then, with all UK 'music' now piped directly from Simon Cowells arse straight to Number 1. Astounding!

  • elo were massive in uk and still get in the cd charts nowdays

  • Same for Elton John, he made it in the USA before he made it here. I totally agree with you about the AntiChrist Cowell!!

  • @trap0001 Yeah! No wonder bands like Kasabian or Primal Scream can't get a record sold in the States. Maybe that's because they are not much cop compared to acts like The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, for example: a band that can really play their instruments and are rhythmically more exciting. However, let's not exaggerate about Simon Cowell. There are many bands here, be they good or bad, who are far away from his populist tentacles.

  • @trap0001 EXACTLY. I Know 30 bands that are brilliant and have been overlooked by the UK over the last 40 years for that reason. We have been dumbed down. N-Dubz anybody?

  • @trap0001

heheh. nice to see yet another one of the many telling the truth like it is.

agree 100% on the Xfactor thing and I am another that comments against it whenever I can.

  • jeff lynnes accent is brummie though and through mate , and he is a Birmingham City fan as well and fuckin good on him, legend.

  • It's ok. I'm from the midlands too and everytime I go down south people say "I love your northern accent" so I'm a bit touchy about it!

I love Jeff in this interview. He seems to be simultaneously, down to earth and a little bit eccentric!.xx

  • I agree with you except, it's a midlands accent!

    Nic.x

  • A fascinating interview..Lynne is obviously as pissed a c**t!! LOL.. Bless him.

  • Check out the legendary Christine McVie interview on Youtube. Completely out of her gourd. Absolutely hilarious!

  • I confess, I love ELO - HEAR MY CONFESSION!

  • I wonder if Jeff had a few pints to settle the nerves, coz Bev wasn't doing the interview lol. Great stuff...keep it coming

  • The man is god isn't he?!

  • Great stuff. Jeff is a lot of fun and a larger than life character and also is god by the way...

  • Love ELO, love the whistle test!!!!!

  • hew looks pissed as a newt

  • Thank you! From a huge Jeff Lynne fan.

  • thank you very very much for posting this rare interview, these kind of things are impossible to get, thenk you again

An avid ELO fan from Uruguay

  • thankyou so much

i have been searching for this for a very long time.

  • This interview was actually early 1976. They mention that Face The Music has been out for awhile (it was released Oct 1975), they mentioned that Peter Frampton already had a number one album (his first No.1 LP Comes Alive! was released Jan. 1976 in Britain), and the question was asked if Strange Magic will be the next single (released Mar 1976).

They talk about the next LP after Face The Music, and Jeff Lynne says it should be released "in September." A New World Record was released Oct 76.

  • Nice detective work! :D

  • Jeff Lynne what a Rock God.... and what a fantastic interview. He is so bubbly and witty and relaxed. Whatta guy !

  • Hi!,A big surprise and a really very good material, thanks for posting!!if somebody has something like this for the time to come (live shows and any other!) ,every ELO fan would be grateful...greetings from Chile from a big ELO/Lynne fan Alexander Carvajal!

  • This Man is Fantastic.Jeff Lynne is from another world!!!

  • Ohh jeff has so great sence of humour!!:-D

  • wow thank you very much for posting!!!
