Wonderful voice, superb acting. I absolutely love him, but do agree that Leporello is not exactly a bass role. :) The pace is slow for me too, but we all know it's not his decision. For those in doubt about what he really knows: listen to a Sarastro or Bluebeard. ;)
Some people says that Mr. Polgar was not a grate Bass. I am not an expert. I like him even if I think he had some problems with high notes. But his acting ability is superb. Even if I think this Don Giovanni version is not as mozartian as Abbado's, I enjoyed it because it is very theatral. After all, Opera is not only music. Well done!
What a marvelous voice!! i've never heard him before. Can anyone tell me anything about him. The tempo is a bit slow here, but with his fabulous voice I don't even care.
One of the best, one of the greatest Leporello!
Laszlo Polgar is the best Leporello i've ever heard, and the tempo, slower, is to me better than the normal one, too fast. This version is beautiful, i know the aria by heart :p
the man who wrote the libretto is Lorenzo da Ponte - great poet
Your so absolutely right...I spent a lot of money for a CD-collection of operas just because one of them was Mozarts "Die Zauberflöte" (the one you mentioned) with him singing the role of Sarastro, marvellous in both singing and acting. I would love to hear him performing...
Well, I am his country fellow and really happy to hear him many times. Actually he sings a lot in Zürich (member of that operahouse).
I enjoyes his Leporellos, Sarastos, Gremins. I think he is one of the best Felipe. And this Easter come the magic: I heard in him in the Hungarian Sate Operahous as Gurnemanz! Realy was a great surprise, the III. act brought tears to my eyes. He sung like a very old man who is happy to talk to a yung man after a long time.
He's got a great voice, but the tempi are just mind-boggling. The first half is fast and the second half is slow; that's part of the humour. I could feel him trying to push ahead in the beginning and I don't blame him, because what was the conductor thinking, going at a snail's pace like that?
toooooo slow! but outstanding singing !

Buona notte amico!

conductor chose a slower tempo. ok. voice is smoother but not as rich as usual
but good enough. a bit sedative. more used to higher testosterone levels. zzzzzz.

He's a eonderful bass, and also a handsome man. I wouldn't mind this Leporello "comforting" me after the Don has done his business...

I find his voice a bit dull, to be honest (at least here)...no "ring" to it. Compare Pape or Furlanetto in this role or similar ones...
His Sarastro is nice, though.

Love the tempo! Every eighth-note is like a little pinprick in Donna Elviras heart!

Thansk for posting this. I love his voice.
The pace is too slow for my taste, but László Polgár is one of my favorite basses. He is sadly under-represented in CD and in YouTube.
Check out his gorgeous Zauberflote aria by typing "Magic flute Laszlo Polgar".

I saw Laszlo Polgar in London last weekend. He was singing Wagner at the Royal Festival Hall.
He had a bad cold, yet he decided to perform (yippee!) -and gave a mind-blowing performance as King Marke in Tristan and Isolde.
Dear God, what a totally WONDERFUL voice this singer has! (even with a cold :)
Thank you, Laszlo. Nagyon szépen köszönöm.
And thank you so much, palcika1, for posting this video.
