  • Dave has a weird style of tapping. I don't understand how he gets those lower notes to be so clear, especially on that old of a guitar.

  • The drum kit used in this video is for sale! Check it out here: cgi.ebay.com/Slingerland-Drum-Set-Rare-Vintage-60s-24-12-16-Kit-/150570676196?pt=Vintgae_Drums_Percussion&hash=item230eb62fe4

  • Anyone know what kind of guitar Dave's playing?

  • fucking epic song, it's even better live

  • is it just me or does the lead singer look like napoleon dynamite here :P

  • @fozman505 dude i was gonna say the same thing!

  • @fozman505 TOTS

  • Davis kind of looks like Tummler from Gummo without his beard.

  • @AlabamaManWhore ohmygosh, he really does.

  • no, fool just sounds pretty awesome when you're trying to make a point^^

  • FUCK YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

  • The smile at 34 is fucking priceless

  • @DeathFromAf4r

lol... Do you have any idea why he smiled? I can't help but think its cause of what he's singing hah

  • does it irratate anyone else when people use words like "fool" or "imbecile" to make themselves sound smart, but reall it makes them sound like some pseudo intelligent motherfucker?

  • @skinlessdwarf

Don't you hate when people use words like "pseudo intelligent" to make themselves sound smart? haha just kidding. Yeah, I do hate that.

  • @skinlessdwarf You just made me very curious to know if I'm pseudo intelligent, cause I generally think I'm a really smart dude, but hmm, I feel like everyone has the capability to be smart to an extent.

  • @skinlessdwarf "pseudo intelligent"

  • @skinlessdwarf does irony hurt?

  • NO BEARD?!?!

  • i saw them last thursday and i got a picture with dave, let me tell you, the beard is something else

  • saw them in chapel hill a few weeks ago. blew the band that they opened for out of the water. these guys are fantastic live

  • Do these guys use any strange tuning like a lot of math rock bands do? Like, I've been dabbling a lot with the FACGCE tuning which sounds nicely with tapping. If they do, does anyone know what tuning they use?

  • Theyre in standard tuning

  • no,

    just really complicated tapping

i think they do do it in your tuning, but i think the drop the f....

  • i did come acroos a tab by them and it explained somthing to do with that, search in google the ongoing horrible for the tab,you might find it usefull!

  • Yeah, I don't really like when Indie's used as a genre. It's not accurate at all. If Anything, I'd call M & A Math Rock, or something of it. But anyways, amazing musicians there...how do you write, nay, PERFORM this shit?

  • It's mainly finger tapping, it's like kaki king's style of playing. once you get down the odd time signature it's easy.

  • Of course it's playable, the main riff for this is actually quite fun. I just couldn't do it with the gusto they do, and live. I mean, if I worked at it, eventually, but never with their order and precision.

  • its not an odd time signature though. its straight 4/4

  • except for a clapping bit in the middle that's in 7/4.

thank god, really. if you can't count on math rock bands to spice things up with a time signature change here and there, we'd never hear the end of 4/4

  • yeah and the drummer is missing like all of the triplets

  • @laudennn I'd say he's pretty good, as well as pretty unique.

  • @MattSturg It's 7/4 during the climax, fool.

  • its 4/4.......

  • seen them live. amazing.

  • its a 125. i think the 150 has a cutaway

  • cyclops monkey...you are too quick...beat me to it.

  • Haha, so weird that we both try to respond to a 3 week old post at the same time. I think you may be right, I saw someone say it was a ES-150 on another vid. I honestly cant tell the difference between the two, I guess I'm not as much of a gearhead as I thought haha.

  • Haha, that is strange! They do look almost exactly alike. Who knows? Maybe I'm the one who doesn't know....haha!

  • I find it strange that a band full of guys who're heavily influenced by early '70s prog. rock are actually accepted by the Indienati. I would have thought they'd be labeled as the dreaded "passe", but I suppose the whiney vocals and the tweedy persona help boast the aesthetic which indie tards expect you to live up to.

All of this is not to discount the band. Love 'em, but I clearly have a beef with the "indie scene" and must push it on strangers on Youtube.

  • indie msuci is pretty sweet imo

  • I don't mind indie music so much as I mind the label and the expectations which are subsequently placed upon the artists.

Indie rock can be Akron or indie rock can be Man Man. Either way, the label applies to a vast array of music and so the label is a bit useless in reality. You could apply it merely to bands like Cat Power and P.J. Harvey, but no one does. It's a term used to lump together a large cross section of bands with entirely different compositional techniques from each other.

  • Yea me neither. Thanks anyway dude

  • What kind of guitar is dave playing? an electric acoustic or something?

  • half-hollow body? I don't really know anything about guitars.

  • I believe its a Gibson ES-125. Its an archtop hollow body electric guitar.

  • It's a Gibson es-150 I think. It's a semi-hollow from the 60s or 70s. Anyone feel free to correct me.

  • I saw these guys live, they were amazing

  • could someone explain something to me, y r bands like don caballero, battles, and these guys labeled as math rock? i realize that some of their songs are in odd time signatures, but a lot are in 4/4 the whole time. im not dissing any of those bands, i love them, but i just dont get y its called math rock.

  • I think any body who uses any compound meters and uses tapping techniques are considered "technically proficient music" and "math rock" sounds good to music elitists with no musical education; so the nomenclature is incorrectly placed everywhere 'cause it feels nice to say if you're hyper-intellectual.

  • Together their amazing.

  • happy x math

  • heh happy x math to you too

  • No.

  • Can anyone recommend bands like this one? or good indie/math rock bands in general

  • they remind me of minus the bear

a good math rock band is

    battles

  • very true sir.

  • Yea, if you check out the older stuff by Battles that is. Its far superior...in terms of "Math rock" or whatever.

I guess the other one would be "This Town Needs Guns" on Big Scary Monsters.

  • Minus the Bear.

  • Tera Melos.

  • tera melos

  • These guys style of music are unique.

  • Seeing them on the 13th, cant wait.

  • amazing

  • amazing, these guys rule! sick drumming!

    love this song!

  • Wheres the mustache of power?

  • mmm... American Football???!!!

  • no not at all. maps and atlases.

  • american football, don caballero, maps and atlases...they're all sort of part of the same movement

  • ...aside from M&A being several years later - -

  • these guys are pretty coool i got to talk to them after a show once i also got to talk to aaron wiess (also awesome) and i like their sound much better live

  • as a guitarist watching this video is a pretty humbling experience

    these guys are amazing

  • who the fuck fingertaps melody? crazy shit here.

  • nick rienhart, thats who. tera melos

  • he's amazing, except live. you can't interpret any of their videos on youtube, it all sounds like a bunch of rubbish

  • Fuck off you dick, this band is amazing and I bet you couldn't play this. You suck, want to sort this out in rl? call me up at (401) 662-2198. Poop mustache?

  • chill out, he meant the sound quality was terrible, not the playing

  • Your not listening hard enough dudeeee :)

  • haha good call.

  • saw them yesturday with rx bandits holy fuck they were amazing

  • I saw these guys last night at the TLA in Philly

    Holy shit dude, really talented

    That tapping is fuckin crazy

  • i just saw these guys yesterday. amazing.

  • I always think of my brother when I listen to these guys...

  • me 2.

  • oh and the mars volta,, my brother likes them too.

  • omg the fall of troy, tera melos, and maps and atlases are like the best bands ever! my brother went to see tfot and tera melos at the glasshouse in pomona. BEST BANDS EVER!

  • i was supposed to go to pomonaaaaa!!

    ah, mannnnnn

    me and my brother

  • i was there!

  • I agree with you there entirely.

  • the fall of troy AND tera melos are ridiculously amazing, technically and creatively, and whether or not your that into it (opinions are different obviously), let's all just respect the amazing skill the bands have :)

the same goes for maps and atlases :)

  • VERY UNFORTUNATLEY

we only had one car for transportation that my dad took yesetrday and i missed the tera melos show the day after my own bday :[

but i think i most likely will see m&a on saturday or sunday

    :]

    2 GREAT GREAT GREAT bands

  • these guys are amazing. they really started to grow on me

  • i think his sing keeps it from going too crazy i feel it maintains that indie feel to the music otherwise it be madness awesome song

  • They are fucking awesome. I just can't get over the singer's voice though...

  • sounds better recorded

  • I think the bassist is the only one doing anything normal with instrument. and even he seems to be workin hard.

I have no idea how all of this random insanity can come together so well.

  • That's the beauty of math rock.

  • i agree, i think that if he was doing equally crazy bass riffs, in this particular song, it would start to sound mushy. either way hes a great bass player!

  • the bassist may not tap in this song, but i've seen him tap in others.. they're all great though.

  • he actually only does the percussion-y thing on bass live, and he's amazing at keeping the rythym/adding feeling AND doing equally sick riffs as the guitars

just check out the EP :)

  • Wow, lead singer kinda ruins this. So much energy in the rest of the band and he just goes through the motions

  • Nah man, it takes a lot of concentration to do that. With all that tapping and SINGING at the same time, it's crazy. I think he'd screw it up terribly if he tried to be too active. It's amazing music, either way and the rest of the band has enough energy to compensate. :P

  • fine, I'll respect that :) Does anyone know where to find their concert dates?

  • mapsandatlases(.)org

    or

    myspace(.)com/mapsandatlases

  • Well Thomas Erak from the fall of troy is proof that you can go crazy and still play complex shit cleanly. Of course he is one of a kind.

  • I totally agree, totally agree.

  • meh. Fall of troy uses alot of delay. nothing to complex, just heavily effected. It's kind of silly, cuz tera melos destroyed them every night when they toured together, and they were the support band.

    This song is sick though.

  • tera melos is fucking unnatural, though. they're two very different (in their own respects) bands, though.

  • I think it's more than just delay. If you listen to stuff like a man a plan a panama a canal it's proof. But tera melos is also one of my favorite bands. It's a damn shame their drummer just quit...

  • That it is. Honestly, fall of troy just really doesn't do it for me like melos or M & A. I spose it's just opinion.

  • Anybody hear listen to the mars volta? I just saw them in st louis last thursday and it fucking blew my mind. They have been my favorite band for so long and it was the first time seeing them. Life changing... Seriously. And every body here should check out Christian scott too if you like jazz music

  • Nice name drop. both are great. I bet you're hip. Now what are you doing at this video?

  • Haha I heard about this band from a friend and decided to check them out.

  • Haha. Cool. They're sweet.

  • except for it's physically impossible to move when he has to sing into the mike

  • These guys have made me wish I lived in Chicago since I was Eleven!

  • god theyre amazing.

  • oh, god.....dave beardless is kinda weird......

  • awesome tapping man

    this is art

    in tabs

  • haha Falafelroflwafle i was just think that out of curioisty did u go to PCA?

  • oh my god! Dave without a beard!

  • this is what happens when napoleon dynamite owns the shit out of a guitar.

  • he makes awesome music?

  • dumbest comment on youtube. period.

  • hahaha. great video!

  • So good.
