@abzvinny318 I`ve been a Martial artist for quite a long time now and I`ve trained in more than a few disciplines and if you tried THAT in a street fight against even one opponent who knew what he was doing you`d end up on your back!. What you don`t seem to realise is that a lot of these kicks weren`t meant for actual combat but were just an exercise to attain co-ordination and balance just as a Kata helps you attain speed and co-ordination.
@serberious Yup, this should only be used for practice and spectacle, unless you are just insanely fast and feel like doing a finishing move on a dazed/clumsy opponent.
what if the guy your trying to kick puts of his hands and stopped your kick.. wouldn't that cause you to just fall to the ground? doesn't seem practical at all
@macronewb its not practical because its not real shoalin...........this is only the stuff thats been popularized and used for spectators....real shoalin isnt taught by demonstration, its taught as experience....shoalin isnt a "fight style" its a bunch of techniques used to make the body into a weapon.....
Johnny could cosplay as Glitch. He sort of presents himself in the same way when he isn't standing there with his hands together. PS: That is a big shirt.(?) Sweat/Over shirt thing.
@michulecalan Yes, that's a BK. The original butterfly kick, however, was a much more thorough process which involved creating a cocoon and laying dormant for a few months till your body changed forms. Practitioners deemed this "complicated" with many "extraneous moves", so now we just settle for a no-handed cartwheel.
@6thChamberFashion you would not use this against one person in a spectators sport.
This is used when there are multiple attackers closely grouped together and within range. One good Butterfly Kick will take them all down (and impress any women watching)
It is also used in demos/katas to show that kung fu is the better martial art, which strengthens the practioner, as well as makes them more agile, flexible and confident. As Bruce Lee often did as there was only karate tournys
I'm pretty sure kicking directly above you is not an effective kick.. Unless your opponent is 7ft tall.. Or if a ninja is almost finished repelling from a rope?
@Aeig Apparently it was originally designed in order to take out mounted riders - i.e. targets over 7ft tall, as it's the person you want to kick not the horse ;)
Although I have to admit, this isnt the way I was taught to butterfly kick during my Shaolin training sessions: /watch?v=ibs8RgE9noY is the style that I learnt. But I guess there are many variations of it :)
@gekiryudojo God, shut up. This whole website of full of the most absurd, horseshit videos. At least this kick IS part of the shaolin training methodology. And, while it may be an utterly useless technique, you can be assured that there's an entire lifetime of training and discipline behind the authentic teachers of the system.
The reason why it seems like asians are good at everything is partly because of their ancient culture consisting of hard work 360 days a year in the rice fields. In addition to spending thousands of hours, waking up early and working all day the rice fields required total perfection. This has made its impact on asian culture which can be traced all the way up to this day. This is not based on my own observations but merely on research by Malcolm Gladwell in his book Outliers.
@TheCrysisProGamer Considering my first black sash (not belt, for the record) was in Kung Fu, nearly 25 years ago, I'd be willing to bet I know a fair deal more than you, particularly in this regard. If nothing else, I've learned enough restraint not to resort to name-calling, which is behaviour that no self-respecting martial artist of any style would engage in. If you felt less self-important and more open to learning, you'd realize you have some growing up to do - life AND in kung fu
@nisbahmumtaz909 shaolin monks are not allowed to show off their moves for personal gain, and from what i see (he has an assistent and a quality camera and not to forget pro lighting.) he makes money out of this.
