@abzvinny318 I`ve been a Martial artist for quite a long time now and I`ve trained in more than a few disciplines and if you tried THAT in a street fight against even one opponent who knew what he was doing you`d end up on your back!. What you don`t seem to realise is that a lot of these kicks weren`t meant for actual combat but were just an exercise to attain co-ordination and balance just as a Kata helps you attain speed and co-ordination.

@macronewb its not practical because its not real shoalin...........this is only the stuff thats been popularized and used for spectators....real shoalin isnt taught by demonstration, its taught as experience....shoalin isnt a "fight style" its a bunch of techniques used to make the body into a weapon.....

This is used when there are multiple attackers closely grouped together and within range. One good Butterfly Kick will take them all down (and impress any women watching)

It is also used in demos/katas to show that kung fu is the better martial art, which strengthens the practioner, as well as makes them more agile, flexible and confident. As Bruce Lee often did as there was only karate tournys

@Aeig Apparently it was originally designed in order to take out mounted riders - i.e. targets over 7ft tall, as it's the person you want to kick not the horse ;)

Although I have to admit, this isnt the way I was taught to butterfly kick during my Shaolin training sessions: /watch?v=ibs8RgE9noY is the style that I learnt. But I guess there are many variations of it :)
