gasoline and other energies are only inelastic over the short term. over the long term, with price increases, r and d expenses become more reasonable, and the comparative cost of new technology comes down. this is especially true when the demand for these will justify mass production.
therefore, hurt in short term, better in long term, the trick is to not have governments interfere in the process.
The only question where Ron Paul's solution is simply false is the debate over government subsidies for alternative fuels. "When prices go up you have alternatives".... nope... not in 100 years. The price of gasoline/petrol is INELASTIC. People must buy it, especially in this country where our public transportation is a joke compared to the rest of the industrialized world. That being said: God I hope he runs.

Ron Paul has explained this a lot further by pointing out that gas prices are kept artificially low - we pay the difference in taxes and inflation. For that reason, there isn't a bigger demand from the population. That allows the large corporations that have bought the rights to patents on new energy technologies to keep selling oil in order to maximize profit.
@MatthewRider1 I guess to clarify my last post: The patent laws, oil subsidies, and economic regulations prevent true competition and distort the public's perception of prices, therefore dictating demand. This is a perfect example of what is meant by a "controlled economy."

The best part about it all is that even if Ron Paul doesn't win he has lit such a huge spark in this way of thinking with a huge part of the younger community. They will be the next politicians when the old slobs die off in the next 10-20 years. Just hope we won't wipe ourselves out in the meantime :S

If Ron Paul wins in 2012 and makes the country better for a couple of decades I will eventually move to the USA for a couple of years. The way it is now I wouldn't even go on a vacation. Last time I went to NY and went to the statue of liberty I was wasting more time walking through body scans and x ray machines. The only question where Ron Paul's solution is simply false is the debate over government subsidies for alternative fuels. "When prices go up you have alternatives".... nope... not in 100 years. The price of gasoline/petrol is INELASTIC. People must buy it, especially in this country where our public transportation is a joke compared to the rest of the industrialized world. That being said: God I hope he runs.

Ron Paul has explained this a lot further by pointing out that gas prices are kept artificially low - we pay the difference in taxes and inflation. For that reason, there isn't a bigger demand from the population. That allows the large corporations that have bought the rights to patents on new energy technologies to keep selling oil in order to maximize profit.
