we did the magic flute in our school. HUGE project. It was pretty cool. I got to play clarinet, i was maybe 10, so not anything too hard. But still. It was grate.
As well as their most suitable voices, the characterisation is just perfect.I especially love the end bit where Pamina realises there are things to do -lets go.She grabs Paps hand & off they go!! He runs like a loose goose-she throws two hand actions out to the side as they turn the corner.I love it.Have watched it a few hundred times, too!!!
Her voice is like... BUTTER. it is so smooth and... like... gorgeous. And Papageno is on up there, too;) But I am more impressed with Pamina, or Dorothea Röschmann!!!OMG Beautiful. Just Beautiful.
Brilliant. At her best, which was around this time, Dorothea Roschmann was just incomparable in the perpetually-undercast role of Pamina. Both singers are wonderful and so deeply moving in this gorgeous duet. Who could ask for more?
The only way I can describe her voice is just "full." It's so thick and smooth. Just absolutely beautiful. And of course Simon Keenlyside is wonderful and a babe.
Just about the most charming thing I've ever seen and/or heard. When she leads him downstage and they sit on the apron, well, I get a little verklempt. And then they hold hands! This production has everything, especially with Damrau who scares the hell out of me!
@presbyterosBassI : I'll watch this opera on Christmas Eve this year. This rendition reinstates back my faith in humanity regardless what happened to me 3 months ago.
I`m musically falling in love with Roschmann, she has such a beautiful, soft, warm voice and always adds charm, delicacy and elegance to everything she sings. Keenlyside is also wonderful sad-for-love Papageno here. An amazing lyric performance for soul, ears and eyes.
This is my favorite rendition of this duet on youtube. The singing is wonderful. But I especially like the acting, such as when Papageno becomes a little embarrased at 2:23 when Pamina looks at him.
@eurydike I should say I like how the actor/singer portrays Papageno's reaction. No doubt Papageno the character is shy and a little flustered by the beauty of Pamina.
I wonder if you guys are able to understand what they sing...because they have been keeping the original language from years, even when they r starring around the world
3:13 the note she hits here is pretty amazing for a soprano.. i love how low that sounds... gorgeous... she reall gets down there.. her exxpression and body language are cool too
i don't think his voice is low at all!!! in his first phrase he sings an Eb easily.
besides it varies between europe and america, some prefer Papageno and other similar roles to be sung by a baritone, but the other prefers bass-baritone. it's really a matter of cultural background i suppose....
I like this song a lot and they both are very good singers. However it seems like she's too loud, or he's not loud enough. Am I just not hearing it right?
Although his performance is fantastic, I don't think he was having the BEST night of his life. You can hear his voice "gurgle and crackle" at times... I'm sure he wasn't trying to push it, but you make a good point.
Having performed the role of Papageno, I can tell that the problem with this duet is that his part is too lower-central part of the voice for the baritone, with the exception of the "reichen an". The soprano part is almost always on her central higher register, therefor it's really annoying for the baritone... especially when you have to perform it with a semi-spinto soprano like Dorothea...
they sing about the love and the fact that men and women match together perfectly. It is called "Bei Männern, welche Liebe fühlen" which means "Men, who can feel love"
of all the videos on here, this is my favorite production of magic flute. we're doing this next spring semester at my university (indiana wesleyan). i'm playing papageno. i've been getting lots of inspiration from simon keenlyside!
Ive never seen this opera, but as a fluke, i just started to take up opera and i have to do this duet in our music dept.'s upcoming production. And in actually learning the techniques, i have a whole new appreciation for it. I liked opera b4 but I love it now!
I find the Italian operas and also Wagner a bit too much to swallow, but Mozart's music is divine and The Magic Flute is just heaven. Check the performance at the Met - ouverture with James Levine and sets by David Hockney. There's also a very nice film by Ingmar Bergman from a production in Sweden. It's such an interesting story, mixing love, a secret sect (Free Masons?) and the naive, charming Papageno, who in the end meets his lovely Papagena. I never tire of it.
Yes, i definitely need to see the entire opera. And i agree, Mozart is a genius! We are also doing the sextet in Cosi Fan Tutte and it's brilliant! Mozart is definitely one of a kind...
