  • You earned my respect, Bill Whittle. I dont know who writes your speeches or if you do it yourself, but they are always worth taking in. Our views sometimes differ on certain issues, because we come from different political environment. I'm not American... but I believe ideals that America was founded on were great accomplishment and improvement of humans. And this American spirit is alive not only in hearts of Americans... it unites the world people.

  • The left didn't figure in the Deep Love of Country that most Americans have - the Love that would drive us to Fight to the Death for our Freedoms. Of course we are willing to Fight to the Death, but as Patton once said... willing as we are to fight and die, it is not our job to die, but rather to send the Constitutions' enemies straight to hell.

  • The futurama business was also a materialistic, technological based vision of the future also. It has nothing much to say about the moral & spiritual basis of the future. That might have something to do w/ why that vision never came to pass. I do wish we had colonies on the Moon though. It has proven more difficult to develope space commercially then we thought though. It seems there is no water on the Moon. That makes permanent settlements much harder.

In other words, life expectancy has sky rocketed with the advent of modern technology- all of which is powered by 'electricity.' Now, this 'electricity' has to come from somewhere. Keep in mind that fossil fuels, the alternative to Nuclear, is often blamed for millions of deaths each year due to respiratory illness.

    In short: Nuclear power saves lives.

  • @DannDobson You neglect to realise that it is Congress that writes and passes laws, the minimum a President does is declare a Bill is now a valid Law. Even if he doesn't like the law, its now a law. Half of W.Bush's time he had a Democratic controlled Congress, and it is they who facilitated the morgage meltdown aspect of the financial sector, following on from Clinton and his congress setting the scene by legislating mortgages to people who would never be able to pay them back.

  • The federal government has grown too powerful and taking away the peoples rights. The separation of powers within our American constitution must be enacted and enforced. The separation of powers keep government branches of power separated and doing unwise and unjust things to "The People". This arrangement is called a system of checks and balances. The American people must step up now and engage fully with the federal government and this radical administration & uphold our American constitution.

    Spending and republicans. Granted Dem. party is about social care and spending - agreed. Yet, from 2000 to 2008 Republican HAD the majority - and you tell me 1: How they spend money 2: What programs they cut 3: What drastic reforms they made?

    I agree with you. I was frustrated why they never bothered to do anything conservatives might do if they were elected. I think, though, that we have to be more active and fight for what we want. Because we have to. If the GOP gets the majority at least again in the House and maybe the Senate, we still have to be out there demanding what we want. Laws and regulations have to be repealed. Liberals don't just reside in one party, but Washington in general.

  • Actually, it doesn't count in terms of the decade. 2000 is the 2000th year AD.  Which means it wasn't fully complete until the year ended on January 1, 2001. 2000 is the last year of the 200th decade of the calendar.

  • Just one thing, it's not the start of a new decade, the new decade begins in 2011 because the Gregorian calender is weird like that.

    Funny that this comes up. I heard someone talking about this on the radio. This person (I don't remember who it was) claimed that we don't count decades the same way. We don't call it the 4th decade or the 1st decade or whatever.

    His point was that the decades are actually counted differently. As a society, we consider the '30s, '40s, '50s etc..

    Not sure I agree with that approach, but I can't bring myself to put 1980 in the '70s

  • Indeed- I consider the '80s and other decades of that sort to be "contemporary decades", accommodating for the rollover of dates. So if one were to call 2010 the start of the new 2010s decade, I'd have no problem. However, when someone says "The second decade of the century/millennium", then that is the actual calendar decade, which begins in 2011.

  • If 2000 began the new millenium, then it also began the new decade. If Jan. 1, 2000 was the first day of the new decade, then we have completed a full ten years... 1-2000, 2-2001, 3-2002, 4-2003, 5-2004, 6-2005, 7-2006, 8-2007, 9-2008, 10-2009.Hence, 2010 begins the new decade. Peace!

  • Oh yeah, also, when it was year 1, the first year had already completed during the 1st - 12th months. That would make year 1 the second year.
