@816bitRemake Yo I hear you man, for me it's the same with FF8.
It's hands down my favorite game and the most influential aspect in my life (sadly) I played it when I was like 8? maybe alittle younger, got it again 5 years ago, but towards the end I just stopped. Like I really don't want to see the end, I'm now 20 and I still can't find it in me to let go.
Hey everybody! I have released my new album 'Progenitor' which has electronic music inspired by great games such as the Phantasy Star series. You can check it out and download it for free on my youtube channel if you're interested!
@jaymthegenius They kind of already did a couple remakes. Phantasy Star Generation 1 & 2 (which were remakes of PS1 & PS2) which were released in Japan on the Playstation 2. Never came to Europe or North America due to Sony cancelling those plans and not allowing Sega to publish them outside Japan.
@streeTkiDwannaBe I'm aware of those, if nothing else it was cool of them to some sidequests to be able to revive Nei and the crystal system in 1 and limit breaks in 2. I don't like the slower pace judging from the videos and the new death place music isn't as good. Two's remake of Rise or Fall, however, is awesome.
I feel so stupid now cause I only just realised Mother Brain is also from Metroid... How did Sega get around using that name from Nintendo, especially at the time?
i honestly think dark force is a bitch in this game compared to mother brain and what sucks is there one right after another. and ive never seen someone use amy bro :P thats balls. I ususually take kain and Anna
Phantasy Star Online was my first foray into online gaming. I loved that game and actually still do. It was simple as hell, and there was only 4 areas to go to, but i had a great time. If they remade it for another console, id pick it up.
I want to make a hack of this game... i think it might be easy to give the appearence of fighting with slicers. Since Anna's attack sprite when she uses slicers is the same as her spell casting sprite. I should be able to make any of the characters look like they weild slicers... but i don't know how to hack...
Holy crap. I'm having a seizure just watching this. You, sir, are a brave man. This must be the reason that so few people here had the bravery to complete this game.
Since just about everyone keeps saying that, that's why I am now playing it (on the Sega Mega Drive Collection). If I really am the RPG fan I say I am, I have to.
In December 12th 2012 Mother Brain will take over the world and 4 people will have to collect the Nei items and be transported by Stephen Hawking to an spaceship to defeat her.
Can someone tell me why PS III is so much overlooked even today? It got me more interested in classical music no less (I think it's got the best music from PS to PSIII). Plus, its "seriously-dealt" themes of love and familial continuation are not too common in games. It's also ambitious, even realistic in its graphical style. it's got a variety of choices plus 7 different planets.
Is it that there were less spells in the game, or that it was not as "cartoony" as the other parts?
No, it's because the game was a buggy lazy mess that, despite having many promising features, it just totally failed to deliver on in a spectatular way, ranging from lazy enemy animations, to badly designed maps and scenarios, a difficulty curve that made no sense and bad writing, and was only tangenially related to PS 1-2 in one specific ending.
It was a lot of 'could have beens' that all failed to be, and that is why it's generally hated.
I only read about "the boots bug" on the internet. To me, the atmosphere was quite deep in the game, it was more "mature drama" than lighthearted humor. And the music fit the ambience.
The enemies are generally well designed and I think could not have been much improved in animation considering their detail and variation. The storyline varied greatly which was unique at the time I think. And the game was not too short, you really had to take some time off to collect some money.
All that might had been true had the previous 2 games not done it a lot better; proving that it was possible. And 'hours of grinding' is hardly an acceptable gameplay 'feature' (and in fact is a shortcoming of the second game as well)
Nobody is saying you can't/shouldn't like the game. I in fact actually enjoyed it. But I can very well see why it is considered to be crap compared to the rest of the series. If rereleased and totally redone, it could be good, but that's never goint to happen.
I liked it a lot, especially with the variety of characters. However I think people hated it because it was different. Hence PStar4 being so much like PStar2. I liked the new approach, but there were some lazy animations like Zavion said, and some enemies, as well as some of the battle music, made no sense at all. It tied in a few aspects of the other games, even PSO to a different extent. I found it the easiest one though, and not too much levelling was ever needed for money or exp
I agree, and I didn't really find the stories all that "in depth" in PS III, either. The multi-generational plot should have been in depth, but it wasn't. It was more "walk, walk, someone joins your party, walk, mini boss, marry a girl" for the first two generations. No matter who you were in the third generation you basically did the same thing. They didn't develop the characters enough. I like it well enough and play it through every few years, but it's ultimately disappointing.
Im 14 years old and I have to say that this is the best RPG I ever played. I am now replaying it. I am currently at Piata in Mota trying to buy weapons and armor to go to Uzo Island to get some leaves to go underwater.
Still the best RPG I ever played, and yes as much as I love PS4 and Final Fantasy 6, I think this games' overlooked narrative is rich with some of the ballsiest story moves ever seen now and especially for its time.
From Nei dying(b4 tht bitch from ff7) to your whole entire party dying at the end and taking a whole lots with them. imagine if Sega did this the RIGHT way today, The ps2 remake is great but so much more could be done.
PS2, what a great game, and about the xbox arcade game.., I am working on that right now!! the only thing i forgot about the game is how long it takes shir to steal... But the star mist and moon dews... defiantly worth the wait!
I personally don't care for the new PS games. I was hoping PSU/O would take place back in the Algo system but it didn't. That really disappointed me, being a longtime fan of the series and all.
@Artificialraven Exactly. I saw the trailer for PSU for PS2 (note I said PS2), thought it was good. Bought it, beat it in roughly a week and a half: not only did it not take place on Algo, but the gameplay wasn't very challenging (except for the final stage), the story so-so, and ultimately it was TEDIOUS! Boring as hell! Same missions, same enemies, same routine until your desired level, money, etc.
I remember this game from a long while back. I was a little kid when I played it. My older brother helped me beat it when I was young (he had beaten it already). This is a great game. I've since then replayed it every time it comes out in a collection (GBA, Playstation 2, and soon Playstation 3)
I played Phantasy Star IV first, and loved it. Then, I tried to go back and play the other 3, and they're just unplayable. Is it me? Is IV just that better that I expect more or something?
I haven't played 4 yet, but have beat the first 3 many times. They are great games and two has one of the best endings in RPG history (in my opinion). Go back and give them another shot. You may end up enjoying them.
ps2 is my fav of the four because of the adventurous atmosphere, melodies, monsters, battle system, sound effects, monsters, story. oh i give up!! everything about this game is wonderful! It will live in my heart forever. (tears rolling down cheeks)
this game was awesome.i recently bought sega mega drive collection for psp and it have all th phantast stars.the con of this game is that u cant see the damage u re doing... xDD
OMG! Memories! Sweet memories. I played the sh!t out of this game! Took me like a year to beat it. And this is the best in the series for sure. 1, 2, and 4. 3 was ok, but not up to true phantasy star standard, but the fact that you could have children and play as them was awesome!! Still, 2 rules...
i have this game it's way to long... it's a good game but waaay too lonnggg i mean i've been playing for god only knows how long and i only made it to the secret control tower after nei dies... i quit lol the whole game is made on mob fights and mazes if you wanted to you could sum up the whole game in 1 min lol... Phantasy Star 2 In A Nut Shell lol someone should make that!
They do go a bit overboard with some of the mazes. What are there like 69 chutes in the one? They can't expect anybody to figure that out without a map. With sheer trial and error that could take a year of your life.
I like challenging RPG's though. I'm glad the random battles are tough. In most RPG's they're too easy. I think they could have made Neifirst & Mother Brain harder too, while Dark Force is plenty tough as it is.
This is one of the best final battles in video game history in my opinion...gah I still play this game today and I've played it since I was 4 (16 years ago and this game's still not old). Truth is I never had time to get to Mother Brain until about 4 years ago XD
I've beaten the first for PS games and PSO, (loneliest game I ever played in my life!! ugh!!) I have this game for Genesis and Gameboy. Well done fight I must say, you had an easier time with Mother Brain than the first time I beat the game. Though we had the same party for the most part, I just didn't have Amy with me... The only other difference I noticed with the Genesis and GB versions were statistical changes for the characters
Okay, one of my friends recomended this (gba collection) and I got it off of ebay, and it looks like a bootleg cartridge, but it works fine, but I don't have a clue in the world on what to do on any of the 3 games, can anyone help me?
Yeah I can help you somewhat. I can't personally give you any info cause my memory is bad but if you go to gamefaqs dot com and search for any one of the 3 PS games, you can find walkthroughs.
You should check for the cluebook on the internet, when I bough the game in 92, I receive the cluebook. It's really important to have it, because the dungeons are very hard. For those who already played, remember the green dam. By the way sorry for my writting, I'm french ;)
phantasy star2 and 4 are still 2 of my favorite all time games... i played phantasy star online... what a deception!!
I wish someone would take sci-fi RPGs and make something good for a change, the only ones recent that come to mind are Fallout series and X-com and both like +10 years old
mother brain dint created algo system, she just controled everything on it
remenber that mother brain dint even existed in ps1
iirc humans(not parmanians, humans from earth like us) made mother brain as a way to control algo system for a invasion. but im not sure if was really that(sounds weird dont it? :P))
thanks the reason i don't know that is i didn't play the first one. I have phantasy star 2,3 and 4 on sega genesis collection. In the 2nd one i'm still i don't know it says i need to get to some biosystems plant but i don't know where that is. In phantasy star 4 i'm at the air castle lashiec keeps pwning me.
I personally use the Snow Crown right away, then have Amy use the Storm Gear when she's not healing the rest of the fight. Have her equipped with 2 Lacon Emel's. And I give Anna the Nei Emel in her other hand instead of the AC Slasher because it seems like it almost always misses anyway. To each his own.
Ahh! Guys! Can somebody tell me the name of the song that plays for the first 8 seconds? It sounds so familiar... know I've heard it before, just can't put my finger on it.
THIS GAME IS HARD AS FUCK! great game but i'd say phantasy star 4 was a way to apologize to gamers such as myself who would prefer less confusing dungeons and a faster levelling rate (please don't hate me for my preference of RPGs. i just think this PS2 simply takes the title of hardest RPG in certain aspects)
the hardest RPG of aaaaaallll time!!! each cave takes 6+ hours due to your slow ass characters and the crazy mazes! every 2 steps is a fight! its impossible to level up to where your stronger than the monsters in the area where your at! However, its a part of one of my favorite rpg series, so i give it props!!! Also, it has great music!
You remember the dungeon that had like....72 teleporters in it? It was in one of the towns and took me a week to get through. Insanity! This game by far has the most complex dungeons in RPG history.
@816bitRemake Yo I hear you man, for me it's the same with FF8.

They really need to remake the PS series, especially for the PC but also for Playstation 3 for those who are console people. But with some changes:
1.A PS2 alternate version that follows the original Lutz plot unlocked after winning PS2
2. A fourth planet with no plot relevance is introduced and gets blown up in Parma's place.
3.Added levels and plot debth, with levels on Parma in II and IV.
4. Lutz is still frozen and wakes up in IV, it was weak that he was dead in IV.

OMG!

YankyDoddle67 3 years ago
LOL I so agree.
animeultrafan 3 years ago
They do go a bit overboard with some of the mazes. What are there like 69 chutes in the one? They can't expect anybody to figure that out without a map. With sheer trial and error that could take a year of your life.
I like challenging RPG's though. I'm glad the random battles are tough. In most RPG's they're too easy. I think they could have made Neifirst & Mother Brain harder too, while Dark Force is plenty tough as it is.
A bit too much level/meseta grinding too IMO.

lol super mario rpg on the begining the song

This is one of the best final battles in video game history in my opinion...gah I still play this game today and I've played it since I was 4 (16 years ago and this game's still not old). Truth is I never had time to get to Mother Brain until about 4 years ago XD
maxpeg 3 years ago 2
Not only is it one of the best final battles but Mother Brain is one of the coolest looking villains ever.

pardon my ignorance, how do you connect the ps2 to the internet?
RocksyCloud 3 years ago
By connecting a network cable? It has (well, the slim version) an ethernet connector so it's just as hooking up your PS3 or 360. =)
Gortlick 3 years ago 2
I've beaten the first for PS games and PSO, (loneliest game I ever played in my life!! ugh!!) I have this game for Genesis and Gameboy. Well done fight I must say, you had an easier time with Mother Brain than the first time I beat the game. Though we had the same party for the most part, I just didn't have Amy with me... The only other difference I noticed with the Genesis and GB versions were statistical changes for the characters
vagrantlibertine 3 years ago
Okay, one of my friends recomended this (gba collection) and I got it off of ebay, and it looks like a bootleg cartridge, but it works fine, but I don't have a clue in the world on what to do on any of the 3 games, can anyone help me?
VoltzCartoons 4 years ago
Yeah I can help you somewhat. I can't personally give you any info cause my memory is bad but if you go to gamefaqs dot com and search for any one of the 3 PS games, you can find walkthroughs.
Artificialraven 4 years ago
The faqs are helping sort of but the battle system is whats confusing.
VoltzCartoons 4 years ago
You should check for the cluebook on the internet, when I bough the game in 92, I receive the cluebook. It's really important to have it, because the dungeons are very hard. For those who already played, remember the green dam. By the way sorry for my writting, I'm french ;)

I remember that. It took me an incredibly long time to figure that out.

DarkAngel54JA 4 years ago
if you can only make your charater a name with 4 letters it's nt easy to get a better name. What would you recomend.
banana360 4 years ago
Well since Bob is my real name, thats why I named the main character that. So piss off all you name haterz (except banana360 :P)
Artificialraven 4 years ago
Fee is my nickname, short for Felix. Depends on the cahracter though.

My nickname is Toad so no problems with there only being four letters

I'd always use some body part or really foul swear word . . . but then I'm perverse.
Adventurestud 3 years ago
foul swear word like fuck or shit or dick
dick is a real name you know.

phantasy star2 and 4 are still 2 of my favorite all time games... i played phantasy star online... what a deception!!
I wish someone would take sci-fi RPGs and make something good for a change, the only ones recent that come to mind are Fallout series and X-com and both like +10 years old
motormouthfrenchie 4 years ago
Wow, this game was amazing when it came out. It looks so incredibly dated now! LOL! Still a classic though.

wait a minute how does this make sense mother brain sort of created the algo system how can it be the final boss.
banana360 4 years ago
I would like to know this too.
stinx72 4 years ago
mother brain dint created algo system, she just controled everything on it
remenber that mother brain dint even existed in ps1
iirc humans(not parmanians, humans from earth like us) made mother brain as a way to control algo system for a invasion. but im not sure if was really that(sounds weird dont it? :P))
khhnator 4 years ago
thanks the reason i don't know that is i didn't play the first one. I have phantasy star 2,3 and 4 on sega genesis collection. In the 2nd one i'm still i don't know it says i need to get to some biosystems plant but i don't know where that is. In phantasy star 4 i'm at the air castle lashiec keeps pwning me.
banana360 4 years ago
I personally use the Snow Crown right away, then have Amy use the Storm Gear when she's not healing the rest of the fight. Have her equipped with 2 Lacon Emel's. And I give Anna the Nei Emel in her other hand instead of the AC Slasher because it seems like it almost always misses anyway. To each his own.
YieArKungFu 4 years ago
i beat the game with nei 4 months ago and the ending is the same

Ahh! Guys! Can somebody tell me the name of the song that plays for the first 8 seconds? It sounds so familiar... know I've heard it before, just can't put my finger on it.

You mean that super mario rpg forest maze song?
Artificialraven 4 years ago
Its the song of the story teller :) a series of an old dude with a dog telling fairy tales.

finalfantasyrules222 4 years ago
THIS GAME IS HARD AS FUCK! great game but i'd say phantasy star 4 was a way to apologize to gamers such as myself who would prefer less confusing dungeons and a faster levelling rate (please don't hate me for my preference of RPGs. i just think this PS2 simply takes the title of hardest RPG in certain aspects)
lechaflan 4 years ago
You've obviously never played Might & Magic Gates to Another World. It makes this game look like Mario Bros. in terms of difficulty.
YieArKungFu 4 years ago
funnest game ever lol
how do you keep Nei alive?!?! =/
snakuvudu 4 years ago
you can't, although you can use a moondew to res her during the fight she dies in
dablitzballer 4 years ago
or cheat using a game genie
Artificialraven 4 years ago
look at the comment i made about the game genie code
finalfantasyrules222 4 years ago
i got this game as pat of sega mega drive collection it's hard i havent even got to the bio-plant yet because i keep dying in this weird place.
banana360 4 years ago
the hardest RPG of aaaaaallll time!!! each cave takes 6+ hours due to your slow ass characters and the crazy mazes! every 2 steps is a fight! its impossible to level up to where your stronger than the monsters in the area where your at! However, its a part of one of my favorite rpg series, so i give it props!!! Also, it has great music!
921144666 4 years ago
You remember the dungeon that had like....72 teleporters in it? It was in one of the towns and took me a week to get through. Insanity! This game by far has the most complex dungeons in RPG history.
Artificialraven 4 years ago
haha, who else did the trick to keep Nei alive? kekekeke
samikaze 4 years ago
how can you keep Nei alive?! do tell.

Alan1212121 4 years ago
Funnily enought, I used to take Shir because she's fun even though she's not a good fighter.
And as a matter of fact, Kain's tech works in the last dungeon. (Don't know why hahaha)
Anyway, the other chars are also here for the rest of the game. Kain is especialy useful in the second part of it.
