  • Whether shes deaf or not, she makes great music. So all you trolls STFU so I can listen.

  • Oh dear God, is this still going on? For anyone wondering what this is all about, it seems to be a group of deaf kids (or maybe just one with many usernames) who have some sort of problem with the fact that Evelyn Glennie has achieved so much despite being profoundly deaf. It's really not worth arguing... they're ignorant, offensive and semi-literate.

  • IT'S ALL FAKE!!! SHE'S NOT ACTUALLY PLAYING GUITAR!!!!! WE'RE ON TO YOUR SICK LITTLE GAME!! Naw, but who's the man on guitar. Very interesting sounds he's making there.

  • the guitars have a wonderful sound

  • in fact evelyn glennie uses a lot the resonnance of the notes and sound feeling them by the ground

that's why you see her playing without shoes most of the time

she adapted great to her deficiency

  • what do you mean by "Guitar playing" in the title?

  • her website has NOT been deleted, it's there and it's very interesting.

google it and try reading it. She's now a Dame, she's highly unlikely to get in trouble because she's highly respected for what she does.

Don't call me stupid, for god's sake. Learn how to have a conversation.

  • how am I the one who is weird and stupid when you're the one calling people f**king C**ts?

  • @groundgirl79 yeah that what I thought it is impossible for her to play music like that eh! I think ummsalma1 didn't realise it

  • Look, I've known about, seen performances of and learned about evelyn glennie for about 15 years. Maybe she was very musically talented before she went deaf which would have been a massive advantage, but maybe you could watch her demonstration about sounds, and read what she says about her deafness and it might help you too x

  • @ummsalma1 Well I still believe she is not deaf

  • I tried to put a link to her website but I can't do it here. Just google it. She describes what she can and can't hear. I believe that people who are musically extremely talented and then go deaf could easily have the capacity to do what she does.

  • You need to do your research, not be so ignorant and not spend your time insulting people. I'll add that you also need to grow up and if you want to enter into interesting discussions online, learn a bit about courtesy, as well as spelling and grammar.

  • what is your problem?! Evelyn is totally deaf, has not heard a sound since she was 12.

  • @ummsalma1 I'm sure she isn't deaf, How would she know doing various music without listen or hear!!! lol Simple she isn't deaf

  • They do it through vibrations. She always performs with bare feet. Watch more of her performances, read her writing on her website, watch some of her demonstrations on how she learnt. She isn't totally deaf, but is profoundly deaf. She wasn't always, she went deaf at 12 so she could already talk and knew about music. Listen to her talk, it isn't perfect, you can tell she cannot hear herself. I had a deaf friend at school who was an incredible dancer, she did it through vibrations.

  • @ummsalma1 well this is quiet sound and vibration would difficult to follow, I am deaf there no way I could do it like Evelyn

  • do u have to be elitist about it? I am deaf, I cant hear someone if they talk to me and I have the bones of about only 5% hearing left, how does that make me less or more deaf than someone? I hate that bullshit! theres no need for it, were in the same boat get over it!

  • and not only that, but I find people like you WORSE than being rasist, I am now 26, I have been loosing my hearing since I was 7 and I have now less than 5%left, I have been part of The Deaf Community in my local area for years and the majority of D/deaf individuals have made me feel welcome but there are so many people like you who question people because they wernt born deaf or have speech and have made me feel unwelcome...

  • so if someone lost their complete sight in the morning does that mean they are not blind because they were not born blind? just because I was not born deaf doesnt mean im not, I have speech because language development ends areound the age of 3, my hearing didnt start to go till I was 7 but now with 5% hearing, im no more hearing than you are.

  • no matter who you are, no matter what your DISABILITY because yes I do consider myself disables as are you, you are UNABLE to hear! you can do anything you put your mind to dont automattically presume you cant do anything because you cant hear, certainly never stopped me, perhaps you should stop trolling people and actually try an instrument for urself, you could be awesome!

  • You're RUBBISHED

  • @pepsico8 yeah thats ok, my point has been made :)

  • I believe what groundgirl79 say

  • Im deaf and I play drums, so wheres the problem? deaf can of course play any music, as its all vibration and percussion especially I find the easiest and most alluring to play :)

  • letteapplejuice@ yeah you're sucks anyway

  • I don't believe you are deaf, Fuck off

  • Well thats not my problem lads, I have the certs and Proffessors notes to prove it, I dont know anything for sure about Evelyn but why this pointless argument, what does it matter, music is music no matter who you are or what may, or may not be working...

  • ... I had never said I was 100% deaf, im not! but I have less than 5% I cant hear for shit, weather the title is hard of hearing or otherwise, I still hear about as much as you do and there is no need to argue over it, you either like the music or not, why waste time arguing over a silly 'politacally correct' title for hearing loss!!

  • I'm not really look for arguement, It just thst Evelyn Glennie not deaf that all

  • I didn't mean to continue this conversation, I'm done with the discussion itself. I just think you should grow up. Not because you believe she's faking, that's fine, believe what you want. But, "fuck off you stupid cunt." Honestly?

I've been keeping a level head the whole time, I don't understand getting angry about what some asshole on youtube thinks of some marimba player.

  • I'm sorry, but I don't believe you. She has nothing to gain from this supposed con. She doesn't advertise herself as this freakshow act. I didn't realize she was deaf until I read all these comments on her page, I just knew her to be an amazing percussionist.

I'm done with this conversation, if people don't want to talk about her music and only about whether or not her deafness is real, I think that's sad.

  • @SpaceRitual EVELLYN GLENNIE ISN'T DEAF

  • Well, I've already explained all of this, and at the risk of making a tired point: Beethoven. Beethoven wrote his most famous/well loved music when he was deaf.

Sound = Vibration, Vibration is something you can feel. If you don't believe she is deaf, fine, but a lot of deaf people can "hear" just fine.

  • prove it.

  • There seems to be a lot of argument about her being deaf. Check out the vid of her on Sesame St. She talks about it.

  • @SpaceRitual yes I've seen sesame st but she making it up and she never be deaf she's a con

  • Why would she fake being deaf? Is it cool to be deaf these days? I don't care if she's deaf, I like the music she makes.

Just because someone is deaf doesn't mean they can't "hear." If they can read lips and feel vibrations, they can "hear."

  • @SpaceRitual No you're wrong DEAF can't or never play any music because deaf can't hear but of course deaf can feel vibrate but not do with the music

  • Are you deaf? Are you speaking from personal experience? How else would you know?

Music is nothing but vibrations, our ears process those vibrations into audible sounds. Evelyn isn't working with those audible sounds, she is just working with those vibrations.

I know it's hard to comprehend, but a deaf person can (and in this case does) make music just fine if they have a strong enough theoretical background. You can fully understand how music works without ever picking up an instrument.

  • SpaceRitual - Your comment full of bullshit, She can vibrate only on ONE but not on various music and you don't know anything about deaf

  • It's obvious that english isn't your primary language, so maybe something is being lost in translation. I think you are implying that she can only sense vibrations of one note and not various. That's not true, harmonies put off different vibrations than single notes, as does dischord.

I don't see why you are getting upset about this, all I am doing is telling you the facts. Feel free to research how sound works, you will then understand how she "hears." Or don't, I don't care.

  • @SpaceRitual Thank you very much for your rude comment about my poor English, I try to be better English erm! erm! fuck off how that eh!

  • It wasn't a rude comment, from the way you form sentences, I'm assuming english isn't your primary language. I can't form cohesive sentences in any foreign languages.

I apologize if I was mistaken.

  • At 1:44 some bongo sounding drums come in. Is that overdubbed? It's only in that one spot and doesn't tonally match anything they were doing.

I like it, the entire jam is great, that part just confuses me.

  • Lo dico da percussionista, Evelin Glennie è bravissima, ma sinceramente dopo una mezzora di questa musica ti devi prendere un antidepressivo. Butta giù pure un cavallo.

  • she can hear some sound but uses the whole of her body to give it definition

  • So... you, podum77 and Germal89 are the same person, or what? Same approach to usernames, same bizarre grammatical idiosyncrasies, same fixation with Evelyn Glennie as some kind of fake-deaf con-artist.

I suggest you have issues. A Youtube comments page is probably not the place to deal with these issues. Are you actually deaf yourself? Do you feel that Evelyn doesn't deserve her fame because she doesn't have such a serious disability as you do?

  • @sfocata lol Evelyn Glennie actually not deaf that for sure

  • For God's sake, get a grip.

  • Comment removed

  • And just so this comments page isn't totally taken up by our little discussion... what an amazing bit of playing! There's quite a bit of Fred Frith on Spotify now, although it'd be good if enough people could urge them to add more.

  • this music make my mind go big, this is a good thing!

  • One of my favorite jam !

Your fan from Gatineau-Quebec....your have fans from all over the world I am pretty sure.

    Michelle

  • I am deaf I want to play guitar but couldn't do it because I am deaf, lol what a laugh she is not deaf what a con

  • she is not deaf. She is half deaf.

  • Yes that right she is not deaf but she is hard of hearing mean she can hear some and she should tell whole world the truth that she is not deaf

  • How is it a con? She's not some kind of performing monkey... she's a truly amazing musician, deaf or not.

  • oh yes she wonderful with her music but she is not deaf as I know that

  • She's deaf. Profoundly deaf, if you want the correct term, and has been since she was 12.

  • Sorry, I don't mean to labour the point, but Evelyn wrote this...

"It is worth pointing out at this stage that I am not totally deaf, I am profoundly deaf. Profound deafness covers a wide range of symptoms, although it is commonly taken to mean that the quality of the sound heard is not sufficient to be able to understand the spoken word from sound alone. "

  • I made it up? Are you kidding? I await your apology with interest.

I can't post URLs in Youtube comments, so go to Evelyn's site, go to the "Live" section, then "About Evelyn" and then the "Hearing Essay".

It's up to you whether or not you choose to believe what Evelyn writes, but if not, you'd better have some good sources.

  • Yawn!!!!!!!!!!!! I choose to believe

Evelyn Glennie was same school as me,

She been booted out from Aberdeen School for the Deaf

    There no need apology

  • Regardless of whether Evelyn is telling the truth on her site, you accused *me* of making it up. I await your apology. Some actual proof of what you say would be nice, too.

I see you're doing the same thing on several Youtube vids... looks more like you have some sort of jealousy issue, to be honest.

  • Ah, another one with the same odd use of grammar. I know you're probably only 13 or 14, and playing with Daddy's big computer, but do try harder, eh?

  • She is profoundly deaf

  • She is not fucking deaf you dumbass

  • Listen, because you are ill-informed and ignorant does not make me a dumbass. Evelyn Glennie has been deaf since she was 12, her hearing having deteriorated since she was 8. Perhaps you ought to read a little before shooting off your illiterate mouth.

  • ulyssesjj@ ha ha she was with me at Aberdeen School for the deaf her head teacher send her to hearing school because she is not fucking deaf allright.

And you stupid ulyssesjj you better shut the fuck up

  • If she was with you at the school, then you are in your 40's. Given this it is remarkable how badly you speak and write. I wouldn't have said hearing was your problem, it is probably something closer to the point exactly between your ears that needs some attention.

  • @ulyssesjj You still at it?????

How badly I speak, I can't speak cos I'm deaf but Evelyn can speak as she deaf how that eh!

Of course I write badly cos again I'm deaf, And your brain need some attention either. Of course I'm in 40's, About same age as her.

  • As you say listen, How stupid you are I am bloody deaf I can't listen or hear unlike the so called Evelyn Glennie ok

  • "Listen" in this context is a figure of speech...

  • It is impossible for anyone who is deaf manage to use any music instrumental etc...I am hard of hearing myself it is difficult for me to use it, How on earth can Evelyn Glennie to use it, Nah she is not deaf, It simple like that

  • You're right. I'm from Swidnica in Poland for example. Great piece of music.

  • beautiful !!!!

  • Greatness !

    Thank you for posting.
