Well, as you may already know what he does every year is recreate those bad events of his childhood.

Later in an episode he told Dexter that after his sister and mother died his father blamed everything of him and started beating him up.

So basically he pissed this man up in order to provoke and make him play the role of Trinity's father, which was as I told you, to beat Trinity.
