@themonkees1969 There wasn't supposed to be. It's sort of a surrealist comedy. There is a theme throughout the film, sort of like Frank Zappa's "200 Motels" film, or "The Wall." It's best likened to a cinematic sketch comedy film.
The monkees invented a couple of new curse words because of this movie. Imagine listening to your car radio in 1968 and a man and woman start moaning: "Head, Coming, Soon, Coming, Head, Head, Coming...
Two of those words caught on for the wrong reasons.
@jcall811 The Monkees did not invent those words. Again its giving credit to these guys for something they did not do. Those words were associated that way long before this movie.
@pmdnyc The Monkees contributed a lot to their careers (as a team and as individuals), music and pop culture in general. The fact that you had to add "again, giving them credit for something they did not do", makes it seem as if you're implying they did nothing.
This movie was made when the Monkees first discovered drugs. I remember going to NYC and seeing it in a theater in the Village. As soon as it started, everyone sparked up a marley. All you had to do was breathe. The more wasted you were the funnier the movie got
@TheMonkeesRock No way. That's the point. The philosophical commentary on the state of the world. We have all talked about this in Film Class. Looking at this masterpiece in symbolic terms? Retarded, nah, you don't understand. This was the point. This movie rocks.
Now this is strange, because I always had the understanding they didn't really plug the movie as a "Monkees movie". I always had the commercials showed a shot of a guy's head for about 20 seconds, before he finally says "Head", and that's it.
This was the explanation that was always given for why the movie flopped. It's one of my favorite pictures of all time. And The Porpoise Song is one of the greatest songs!!!
That's John Erwin as the announcer in this 1968 theatrical trailer. However, when people originally saw the film in their favorite local movie theater- well, it was a "box office disaster"......
savethetpc: I didn't think any of the original 1968 commercials even mentioned The Monkees!
- from what I recall reading, the promo clips that were used were the black and white image of that guy's head for this movie and not the Monkees. Though, I do not have the book handy, Andrew Sandoval's recent book on the Monkees may provide more details about this promo issue.
As far as I know it was a theatre promo. The people behind the monkees (producers, etc..) have been quoted as saying that they planned on killing the Monkees career with this film. Of course I have always loved it, but then again my fav Stones record is Satanics Majesty Request.. so there ya go.
@KeepItSmooth According to Teri Garr who was in the movie, the hopes for the movie was it would be big enough to warrant a sequel. The next movie would have the tagline "from the people who gave you Head last year" As in oral sex. Teri said it was a running gag behind the scenes.
Thanks for posting this, KeepItSmooth. Do you have any idea when this commercial was made or where it was shown (i.e., movie theaters or TV)? I didn't think any of the original 1968 commercials even mentioned The Monkees! I would think that if this commercial had been shown at the time, the movie might have done better at the box office.
; Rest in Peace, Bert Schneider.

I assume the film was a test project for the shows producer Bob Rafelson before he and Nicholson went to make Five Easy Pieces two years later.
