I thought it was just something the drummer found lying around and used, but then I began seeing it more & more at acoustic festival performances. Most recently The Noisettes (another good female singer, though the music's not as interesting.)

So yeah, it's a professional percussion instrument, can't think what its called though.

I found it - it's called Cajon (pronounced kaxon in english) and it has afro-peruvian origin, in early 1800s but it's becoming more and more popular at festivals and stuff. The front side is made of thin layered plywood and it has been used by bands like Fleetwood Mac and the Gypsy Kings. Cheers, Mel

i met her when she was in Thailand recently and got to hang out with her for an evening over beers (I was working for the promoter). She's well cool, down to earth, funny and receptive to whatever you want to talk about. So yeah, someone well worth knowing. And she's great live -- you kinda have to be there to get the full impact of it. She deserves a lot more popular success than she gets.

Martina sounds great. She was spectacular during the making of Maxiquaye. Those haunting melodies came out of her soul....there were no laboured writing sessions for her melodies, she would hear a track for the first time and just start singing. Nearly all her vocals on that record were her first takes as far as I remember. She was unbeleivable.
