Remember years ago my mates dad drove an EC13 with a twin splitter first and last one i ever saw, what are the differences between this box and the roadranger?
No clutch on Eaton Twinsplitter except when pulling away. I drove ERF's for six years solid and never had a problem with the gearbox. the Fuller roadranger was a different matter however.
still use this box in the seddon atki tractor unit royal engineers gross all up 68t if we had anything that heavy , great box been using them for years most civvi drivers wouldent have a clue thease days they would shit them selves!
why are you using the clutch? to change up just move the switch position then take your foot off the throttle then back on the throttle and your in the next gear and to change down you take your foot off the throttle, move the switch then press throttle and its changed down. you only have to use the clutch to start off and stop.
@jackrussell236 Your method usually works on most Eaton Twin Splits I've driven, but when you carry out this method, and it doesn't go into gear. Whats your solution then? I'd say this one wasn't the best example of one of these gearboxes. Had to try things you wouldn't normally do to make it shift.
The Eaton twin split is THE best `box there is. You can keep these 4 over 4`s (for pussies!!!) and the like, once you`ve mastered these boxes you will NOT want to use anything else. And to those comments below, once you are on the move you do NOT use the clutch. If you do, you stand a chance of missing the gear! I`ve driven millions of miles with these `boxes and they are the best bar none!
The twin split was idealy suited to slower revving motors like the Cummins 14 litre. Also had one in an ERF E14 with the big Cummins 350, and this was sweeter to use than in the higher revving 10 Litre Iveco. Shame they couldnt make them quieter, they'd still be around today, albeit in semi-auto guise like the Eaton SAMMT fitted to early Iveco Eurostars. Anybody know of a 520bhp V8 Eurostar with the twin split in? I know most went to the Irish, they called them 'Pope Mobils' coz of the big cab!
I owned an Iveco 190.32 with the twin splitter in, back in 1993,best gearbox ever! Only used clutch when pulling away, and very rarely on hills to change down quickly, the clutch peddle had a button on full stroke that when depressed would 'brake' the the layshaft and enable the gears to synchronise allowing a quick downshift.
Beautiful gearbox, and once you mastered it you could easily blockshift without the clutch.
My drivers couldnt drive it, so it was left for the 'Gaffers' motor!
A twin splitter in an F8, with left hand drive but driver talking English, I think this must be one of the development vehicles used by Eaton Bolton for product development/destruction purposes. The F8 came with a RT11513 as standard, the twin split didn't turn up until the F90 came out, in 1990.
Then I stand corrected. I drove a new feightliner dump truck that the railroad recently purchased. very nice truck, and the interior seemed similar like this.. never driven a MAN F8. They easy to drive?
Yes, once you've got used to the Eaton Twin split gearbox and the gearbox is shifting ok for you, there is nothing difficult about it. Never driven an American truck yet. I want to though once I move out there.
Thanks for the info. American trucks I guess shift like the rest. You have your trucks that shift smoothely, and then there is your trucks that just dont want to play nice, and refuse to go into gear. I drove a brand new 3 axle grapple truck for the railroad, and it was a bitch from day 1.. never wanted to go into gear when down shifting. I drove my co-workers truck who had the same truck, brand new like mine, and his shifted with out a problem.. I would like to drive a mercedes truck my self!
I have driven a few Mercedes, they are ok. A lot of the modern Mercedes Actross's are automatic or semi automatic with the touch lever for shifting up and down. EPS or Tiptronic I think they call it. The manual gearbox Mercedes Axor's I'm not so fond of. The seat doesn't slide back far enough for someone of my height.
Once you've pulled off, you can normally shift an Eaton twin split without using the clutch. Sometimes they don't go in so easily like that, and double clutching helps.
You know that song from Smokey And The Bandit that we can here in the backround... That's the full version. Were did you find the full version? It's rare.
Well I was on a Cruise holiday and got talking to one of the entertainers. Steve Womac, friends with Paul Williams who played Little Enos in Smokey and the Bandit. That's besides the point. But I told Steve how much of a Jerry Reed phenatic I am, and he said that he had a friend who had hundreds of his tracks. So he got his friend to mail me a CD, and this version of "The Legend" was on it.
Hey there. I would love to get a copy of that song too! I've looked everywhere and can't find it!!! Please email or contact me if there's any way I could get a copy!

like jack russell said why the clutch it's only needed to start & stop, if you need the clutch your box is knackerd

@athole1954 and as I mentioned in Jack Russell's reply, this box was quite tired.

Leggets and the Post Office were still using these 5 years ago. Loved their Eaton twinsplits-next easiet thing to a full auto on the motorway.

Think the road ranger is a 4 over 4 isn't it? This box is a 4 position lever with a 3 position switch giving you a total of 12 gears.
