The Gee bee in this scene is now owned by Kermit weeks in FLA (Fantasy of flight) I read he solved the problem of it sheeding wings due to wing/aleron flutter (common in 30's high performance aircraft) and projects it can now go over 300 mph
this guy has the neverending story, the rocketeer, the last starfighter, the time machine, flight of the navigator.. what is this the youtube historical archive of the best movies ever?
i first saw this movie at the now-gone General Cinema Route 46 twin in Totowa...i even had the 3D comic book when i was young...didn't know that the movie bombed at the box office. I've seen all of joe johnston's movies, including captain america!!! Great director...what's his next movie?
This movie and the Phantom were probably released at the wrong time or not marketed right. Both are great, but didn't do well in the theatres, a cryin' shame.
This movie suffered from the Hollywood tendency to do origin stories. Origin stories are boring. Dribble out enough info to get a real story going. Rocketeer, Lone Ranger, ST The Motion Picture are classic examples of ruining a lot of potential. I go to the movie, I want to see Rocketeer not some guy trying to be the Rocketeer for much of the movie.
I get chills up my spine and for a moment im young again. This is what film is all about, i close my eyes and i can smell the popcorn and the seats of the theater, which isnt even open anymore. This and home alone bring me back to a time when anything was possible and your imagination took you anywhere.
@mkc92ingc really, 20 years? Hard to believe it has been that long. I remember my parents dropping my sister and i off at the old Parkway theatre to watch this one. I think it may have been the first flick my parents let us go see without supervision :P
Great childhood memories of this one. This is the reason i have faith in Captain America.
@Stigmatainmypants YEAH! Say it loud! True is on the march! On the defense! On the attack! When the enemy advances, we retreat. When he retreats, we harass. Set out baits to entice the enemy. Feign disorder and crush hiw. Sun Tzu/Tzi, 500 B. C./ B. C. E. Ancient Chinese General who wrote a book called the Art of War. And his first command as a general was a group of female concubines!
The Rocketeer was truly a portrait of America. Everything is in it from the humble pilot (where flight is a symbol of our freedom), to W.C. Fields, to our patriots, and our quest for freedom.
The opening music literally makes me want to cry. Where did the fun of adventure and b movie serials go? Hollywood is all but defunct now. Sure Pirates captures so of it, but this is has the charm and heart of old serials that inspired star wars and indiana. This makes me love movies, and without it, I fear for kids as new and crappy movies are continually pumped out. Nothing can compare to this feeling. No matter how cheesy this is.
@zacuh17 Through the 90s, I would get up early of a Saturday to watch the old Flash Gordon serials before I kitted up and went Bowling. I agree with you here. Hollywood is dying rapidly.
shows you how unappreciated this movie is its been up for 2 years and Disney hasn't taken it down yet, knock on wood because i love this movie, childhood favorite hands down.
@Friskey Same ehre. actully I was still a baby when this came out in theters but sa it as a kid, and loved it to this day. the comics better, but still Wish they make a sequal.
@pyramidhead138 I totally agree with you there! This movie puts JP3 to bloody shame. I wish we were still living in the early 90s! Everything has gone to worthless shit nowadays!
@starpilot1983 Oh please enough of the my era was better than yours, just because you don't like the media nowadays does not mean its all bad, sure there are horrible movies today but there are also good ones which was also the case in the early 90s
@cromwellian13 l agree. She is still a good looking woman, but for somewhere along the way she thought she needed to lose weight. Twenty years ago, looking at her was like staring at the sun.
The opening credits said this film was directed by Joe Johnston right? Well that guy is also the one who's directing the upcoming movie, "Captain America: The First Avenger", which helps lead up into the 2012 movie, "The Avengers".
I saw this in the theater with my dad and sister when I was seven. Until I watched Star Wars on video, this was my favorite movie, though it's still in my Top 10 after about twenty years. Thanks for the memories!!
What kind of idiot gangster/bank robber would waste his bullets on an innocent random passerby plane? did he really think the plane was working with the police?

@ulyssess702 its not about the fact that the good guys win most of the time. What matters is HOW they create the story DETAILS, how it plays out. Cuz face it pal, fat chance you'll find many movies that have the bad guy win. and for good reason
Who needs imagination when there's intelligence, this is a ride that sadly I was exposed to many times as a kid and simply don't feel like taking again. The same director who did this movie is directing Captain America: The first Avenger. You mihgt say it's a little glimps of how the movie may look like.
Kemit Weeks owns this aircraft and has figured out that one of the problems was the "wing flutter" the Gee bee had, he tested it, and fixed the problem, it is now airworthy (although rumor has it nobody will fly it) and for sale! he has another one for sale also I believe, both are replicas.. The Gee bee was built to a very high standard, by engineers who knew what they were doing and the A/c was stressed to 9 g's . Fast.. mean...dangerous...KOOOOLLL
What a brilliant opening for a movie. A car chase, a dozen beautiful, historical planes (pity one got destroyed), some good piloting, a fist fight, an explosion and a nice representation of Mr. Hughes' hangar, complete with Spruce Goose scale model and Hughes Racer. Damn.
@flyboyII Not to mention a beautiful score by James Horner. "Begin the Beguine" as a featured number is superb. Jennifer Connelly never looked better and Timothy Dalton does a great "evil" Errol Flynn. Alan Arkin is his usual deadpan best. A very good movie, reminding us of Hollywood's Golden Age, and, they don't make them like that anymore.
@errolfan Very true. Needless to say, television and cinema is dead to me. I do not own a tv and never go to the movies. Fortunately, there are enough old television shows and movies on the internet to keep me entertained. I am choosing to live life pre-2000. Screw anything after the new millenium.
@flyboyII Back in the heyday of American aerospace, G-Men, spies, gangsters, Nazis, heroes, damsels in distress, pure and simple action and adventure without the fancy special effects, language, nudity, gore...the perfect adventure movie for any age.
@flyboyII Best first ten minutes of any movie I have ever seen. It's a really good film in total, but, how do you live up to that first ten minutes? You can't. Too much, too soon. Only Alan Arkin's comment brings us back down to movie level - "Well, that's the end of that".
@flyboyII Ya I always loved the opening. The music, the planes.. they set the tone really well for the mid thirties. This was one of my favorite movies growing up. Thnx for the post :D
@flyboyII Yes, much thought and care were put into the details of this film. It was really nicely and artfully done, to be so quickly dismissed and forgotten by critics and viewers alike. Several have said how much more they liked it the second time around, seeing it again after some years had passed. I'm one of them. :)
@shizlegizmgar Me too. Gotta love the days in which they used the real stuntmen as opposed to CGI and the other substitutes for real people, the token of late 80s/early 90s films.
People were way to hard on this movie. It is such a under rated film and one of my favorite films of my childhood

The Rocketeer's the greatest, I'm gonna see if I can order the old Rocketeer comics online.
The best back-to-back movie combo is The Rocketeer & Dick Tracy

OMG the Rocketeer was my favorite super hero because he didn't have super powers!
Dark Void is coming out tomorrow and its kinda like the rocketeer. Only replace nazis with space aliens.

12ock 2 years ago
@12ock The movie was set in the late thirties. But it was made in 1991.
matt484991 2 years ago
@matt484991 Because it's not obvious at all that this wasn't made in the 30's.

@shizlegizmgar yeah me too man. the action figures were hard to find. at least for me. i hope they remake it someday
CIDVICIOUS831 2 years ago
@shizlegizmgar Me too. Gotta love the days in which they used the real stuntmen as opposed to CGI and the other substitutes for real people, the token of late 80s/early 90s films.

@shizlegizmgar Ye know what? I JUST remembered this obscure '90s movie. And I remember really liking it.

The GeeBee really does look like a 'fun' aeroplane to fly!
ste309w 2 years ago 2
They should have made the movie about the Gee Bee Z instead
