@Koach127 IF you see who she went up against as a solo artist, it's easy to see why. She should have won with the Supremes. But individually, she was always outsung by her competitors, especially in the R&B categories.

Ross was given the platform for personal reasons.she learned how to be a good singer.

She became a performing star and she deserves recognition for her style and personality. But Gordy gave fame too her and took it from others.

But to say she is the musical artist of the century is too insult great talent: Sarah Vaughn, Ela Fitzgerald, Diana Washington, Mavis Staples, Aretha Franklim (show was not just nominater - but won over twelve Grammys), and all of the great singers of her time.

It's actually a travesty that Diana Ross hasn't received ANY Grammies! Oh, it's personal alright! The academy clearly has deliberately chosen to slight her for petty personal reasons! Thank God The Kennedy Center Honors disregarded those SOB's and gave Miss Ross her just due! Diana Ross is a fantastic albeit unconventional vocalist with dozens of classic hit records and she deserves better than she's gotten from the so-called music community. Berry Gordy couldn't give Diana fame! lol He simply knew what Diana Ross was capable of and gave her an opportunity to proove it because she was the most capable to achieve the level of success he aspired for himself as well as for Motown overall. Berry wanted the whole world across the board and through Diana he knew he could get it more so than with anyone else and so he did! Gordy could indeed give her fame, and did.

the full resources of Motown in its prime, were redirected to back and push the Supremes and her, at the expense of acts like Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, the Marvelettes, Gladys Knight anbd the Pips, and Mary Wells. They were much more liked in the UK, with white kids in the US. Motown places the Supremes on TV specials and in Movies, and bribed the best nightclubs to get them headlinbed. That is what a record labed did, and does, to get ahead.

Gordy didn't have to bribe any nightclubs to get the Supremes in there! Their record sales and popularity across the boardmade them star attractions. Martha could NEVER interpret those pop standards like the Suprmes. The Vandellas lacked the natural grace and vocal elegance the Supremes possesed. They all followed the Sups in the club circuit but they didn't enjoy the same raves and success there. The Marvelletes? Please!! Wanda made Flo look like a tea drinker!  Galdys was a great act CONTD

but the didn't enjoy the same sucess as a pop group they were set in the r&b category and they would not sell well at the Copa and other places without changing their entire approach to the stage. The Supremes did it seamlessly. YOu have bought the lie and myth that many Motowners believed. They thoght they had the same wide appeal as the Supremes and simply DID NOT! Back to the Marvellettes. The main lead singer Gladys was um, well...They really couldn't even harmonize.

@deereewon Diana Ross had cross-over appeal...something the other two women did not have. She also had the support of Berry Gordy and her family. Also, she was selfish when it came to her own career....maybe had the other two women been a tad bit selfish, who knows what kind of career heights they could have reached. Moreover, Diana Ross made a name for herself and Beyonce Knowles reminds me of her in some ways..although I think Bey is more successful.

I feel that Diana was destined to be a star. It was in her from the beggining, but Berry was probly the only person besides her self who truly knew what she was capable of. Alot of people at Motown didnt really take her serious as an artist. Her voice was unique but not necessarly the best. Berry believed in Diana even whe she was unser of her self.
