I don't get it...why the hell would you waste time and resources on humanoid spacecraft design? It seems horribly inefficient and pointless. Even if it is supposed to be capable of mobility on ground, as well as space and atmo, I'm pretty sure that wheels would be more efficient.

According to SEED lore, the Mobile suits came from current Astronaught suits, gradualy expanding. They were used to construct the colonies/PLANTS and when war broke out, they were available by the thousand to hand so were refit for war.
