  • At the STOP you MUST stop, otherwise poses a threat.

  • Turn your music down, you'll save at least 3 mpg;)

  • at 0:50, you didn't stop at the stop sign. :)

  • It seems like you now what your doing, so i have one more question. Is the puls & technique more effcient than keeping a consistent speed? And if so, is it better in al kinds of speeds, cars, rods, transmisson on so on? Thanks a lot!

  • aren't the car using fuel to keep the engien going while you have it in nutral? I use to keep the car in the fifth gear so i'm not idling, isn't that a better tequnic?

  • I use a ScanGauge to measure fuel consumption in real time. When my car is warmed up, it'll burn about 0.15 gallons per hour at idle, but to keep in gear could be three or four times that (the transmission, gears, etc. all have efficiency losses along the way).

  • Okei =) I think we all coud and shoud learn somthing from you and your video! i sertenly did! you shoud also make a video of you driving in the city.

  • the coastin nutral..is it bad in automatic when you shift back up to D? i have done it but when i'am going to a complete downhill stop(when i get home) so what i mean is it it ok to do if im doing 55mph then shift up..

  • If your car is reasonably new it *should* rev-match by itself. Try it out at a lower speed to make sure it does, though. If not, just give it some gas right before shifting back into drive to bring the RPM's back in line.

  • Social D rocks ... and thanks for the annotated video! That helps a lot. I'll have to post one soon with some results.

  • I've come to the conclusion that all hypermiler hate comes from speeders who are afraid if we start a trend and everybody slows down, the speeders will stick out like sore thumbs and be more easily caught by law enforcement.

  • @LameBums Omg your one of the super slow bad drivers... Sorry but you guys clog up the roads, and are pretty annoying. I am not a "speeder" but I atleast go the speed of everyone else, people have places they need to be, or generally don't want to take extra time to get somewhere.

  • You may be saving on gas, but you are beggin to be rear ended by another driver. Going too slow on the highway (even in the right lane) can be as dangerous as going too fast.

  • Hi - Great video. Did you have to rewire your stereo not to shut off during FAS?

  • The car is entirely stock--I don't even use grill block or an engine block heater.

Cutting the key back to IG-1 still leaves some electronics on such as the radio and the lights, but the ECU, power brakes, power steering and probably other stuff is gone.

  • im trying some of this stuff, cant do all of it becasue i have an auto. but what r your rmp levels when u are accelerating? im trying to keep them below 2000 rpms when i start to pick up speed

  • Here is a test I did over a previous month with old Subaru with a gazillion miles:

Normal All City driving @13 gallons: 315 miles

Slow accel. and gliding in gear: 345 miles

Shifting into Neutral and gliding: 425+ miles

This is a Front Wheel drive, 4 cylinder, Automatic, 270,000miles, All City Driving. Gas Tank holds 16 gallons, but I fill up around 13 all the time. So, saving $15 per week is not worth risking safety and transmission damage, for me.

  • To try and save more fuel, I went to get new spark plugs. I then discovered the car only used 3 cylinders, fourth plug was unplugged (cable was just barely on it) and was unscrewed. Mechanic work, 9 months ago. I thought that Subaru ran normally, but now it is totally smooth, no vibrations. I will redo the test and see if numbers went up or down.

  • i coast down hills all the time, like i'm on a bobsled run,let the downhill drive the car! fuck the other drivers and if I slow I put the flashers on

  • Nice video and good demonstration of the techniques.

You might find you increase your mpg greately if you ridge run in the right lane. (Move right just a foot or so so your tires are on the smooth part of the road.

Check your owner's manual for the most efficient shift points and use all of them at 2000 rpm or just a little higher. It really helps.

    5 stars here

  • I ride the white line if it's rainy out, if that helps. I shift fairly low, at the very least high enough so it doesnt lug in the next gear.

  • Wow. You're aware you can be ticketed for going slower than the posted speed limit, right? You might improve your own gas efficiency, but keep in mind those people behind you braking and speeding up to get around you. Also, nice job running a stop sign in the first minute. I hope you get ticketed for the next one you run. If you really want to save gas, use public transit or ride a bike.

  • Heh... I admit to the stop sign. I live 15 miles from class so good luck biking. And a bus would be four hours round trip. I'm looking into carpooling though--if given the reasonable option I would gladly take mass transit.

You've never been in Ohio, have you? I got a ticket for two over once. Believe me, I drive the fuckin speed limit at all times, or less, from now on.

  • Being in Neutral in traffic is illegal, so is shutting off your engine. You can get a ticket if a cop hears you cranking the engine in traffic.

  • You can also get a ticket if the local city has anti-idling laws, too. You can get a ticket for anything these days.

  • Actually, no. You cannot be ticketed for going slower than the posted speed LIMIT (when did it become a requirement?). You can be ticketed for going slower than the posted MINIMUM speed, if it is posted. Most states, as far as I know, is 10mph less than the PSL on surface streets and 40 or 50mph on highways. Wouldn't want you to be misinformed.

  • I meant to ask...what does FAS stand for?

  • Forced Auto Stop - a hybrid car will "auto-stop" the engine if conditions are right. Forcing an auto stop via the ignition key also kills the engine. Some people say EOC instead.

  • Thanks for sharing - very good techniques for those who are new to hypermiling. My only complaint is your taste in music (story of my life? gag), but thats just me. And yes, us college students need to save as much money as possible, especailly me!

  • And as a broke college student whose budget is pinched by the damn Kentucky Democrats cutting education funding, I need to save money wherever possible. Including $4/gallon gas.

  • That's why when possible I stay all the way to right lane. There's two or three other lanes, on which other people are free to pass.

I'm the only guy following the law--taking the speed LIMIT as it actually is, not as a minimum requirement. :(

  • vehicle and specs? (make model engine tranny tire size etc)

  • 2000 toyota echo, 2 door, everything stock. 1.5L engine (1NZ-FE) with either 106 or 108 hp. 5 speed manual. EPA rated 29 city, 37 highway (old EPA 34/41.) I think it's 14, maybe 15 inch wheels. Whatever's standard.

The biggest mileage booster for me is keeping to no more than 55mph (the gearing means I'm doing 3,000 rpm at 70mph) and killing the engine while going down long hills (Cincinnati locals will know what I mean by "hills")

  • children of bodom loooook um up dude. great driving musicx man man it makes me drive well. try this song .......

    umm,mmm...... how bout .....

.....sorry im alwys piossed try every time i die by children of bodom peace dude

  • hey dude, please can i ask what techniques you use for when you are coming up to traffic lights up a hill and there is no cars infront so youl b first at the lights. q1. do you coast to the ligfhts that are red and stop??? or do you calcul;ate when you think theyle go green and coast in first or 2nd gear untill they change. personaly id go right up to the lights with watever momentum i have spare. but would be tempted to cost upto lights and still having momentum as it goes green. what u think?

  • 1--Usually I'll do that, and I'll try to bleed away as much speed as possible with engine braking. If I'm far away and I see it in the distance (>20 seconds) I'll try to time the light and roll through with at least some speed so it isn't a total loss.

Sometimes if I know it's going to be a long light, I kill the engine, and roll up to the light and leave it there engine off the whole time.

  • Love the Social D playing in the background!

  • THE PEDAL ON THE RIGHT GRANDPA
