It's easy to invent things people need. The real challenge is coming up with stuff no one could use in a million years....like a solar powered flashlight, or an electric sponge or an aluminum umbrella or a remote-controlled sock.....
'Who needs it?' I remember that line very well, and I guess it shows that while imagination and creativity are good, too much ambition can lead to problems. Thus, a 'balance' between the two must be struck.
I wonder why the guy decided to throw the rock away after he looked happy trying to think what he can do with the rock and what he can invent with the rock.
Few inventions have saved more lives and prevented more hardship than the wheel, and liberal environmentalists wish it had never happened. DO they realize that in wishing for us to go back to some imagined agrarian utopia, they are consigning billions to their deaths? Maybe some of them think the earth would have been better off without us. Amazing.
Without the invention of the wheel, people could not get produce to distant markets and the green revolution, that eliminated famine in the developed world, and that allowed a massive expansion of human population, would have been impossible.
The wheel, among other foundational inventions, is what lead to longer average human lifespans, and lower infant mortality.
The wheel represents human advancement from the brutal state of nature.
@mattymuck I'd be surprised if you could find any evidence that animals "recognize the significance of round objects." But the wheel is much more than just a round object. It involves axles and journal bearings, at the least. No one uses a wheel like they do in the BC comic strip: just standing on one wheel. To be useful, you at least have to make a cart. This is something that is WAY beyond the simple tools that chimps and the highest non-human animals have ever done. Carts were invented.
@freesk8 i said the significance of round objects for other animals, maybe the first wheel made in practice for transport could be considered an invention but the basic aspects behind it seem common sense to me.

Just check the last thought in his head.
"I'll call it a cucumber! No, that's too long a name."

I think the thought of all those cars made him rethink the whole thing.
But still, great clip. I always liked it.

Yes, that sounds right. He probably thought that it wasn't a good idea to have cars around.
I agree. This skit was great, and I really like it too.

You can make fun of me, but what I said is true.

I guess that what you are saying is that arguements for and against progress can go in a lot of different directions.

@freesk8 how is the wheel an invention? It's common sense, other animals could probably recognise the significance of round objects.
