A) Richard Pryor and Rodney Dangerfield are two completely different types of comedians. This is like comparing Jerry Seinfeld to Chris Rock or Jerry Lewis to Bernic Mac- there simply is no answer, it is all opinion-based.
B) Their subject matters are completely different. Rodney's jokes were very self-deprecating and reflective while Pryor was more observational/ social commentator
C) If you can't take profanity, I suggest you fucking grow a pair of balls you pussy. (Hint: that was a joke).
@sabulba30 Just cause Rodney Dangerfield liked the show, doesn't mean I have to. I used to watch this show all the time because there was nothing else to watch. But it really was not that funny. at all. Rodney Dangerfield is still a pimp...and I love that man ilke crazy mad....but Still Standing sucks. And you're dumb for trying to argue that point by mentioning that Rodney Dangerfield liked it. Oh, and this is America...so I'm allowed to have my own opinion without assholes bothering me.
Although I've been bowled over by the mastery of Richard Pryor (Live on Sunset Strip) , Rodney was always closer to my heart. And then to see him in Natural Born Killers just freaked me out totally...that voice, the cadence of his voice, his mannerisms, his pop eyeballs, all turned to evil....amazing performance from an incredible guy. RIP, Rodney....
pshinspections, you said it perfectly! Any GOOD comic will admit, working 'blue' is the easiest, fart and d**k jokes get an 'easy' laugh. Try being funny CLEAN!! Now, THERE is skill and talent!
@skateeboy don't even try to say that Richard Pryor wasn't one of the greats! it's called different styles. Both of them were great! Don't try to slight Pryor because he cursed. The key is making people laugh
Jacob Cohen. There was a joke. I wanted a new name, a guy gave it to me, Rodney Dangerfield. I didn't like it. He said try it for awhile and come back. Still didn't like it and went back. The guy said do the same thing. He came back the third time and he couldn't find the guy, he changed his name.
@carnybitch this was a good show if you actually watched it you would learn it was a funny show and one of Rodneys favorites according to his biography book...sighs
I dont understand how you could even compare pryor to dangerfeild. dont get me wrong, they were both hillarious, but they are so different from eachother.
It's pretty sad you can't differentiate between patterns of speech and using "profane" language for a laugh. That was the way the man talked. Shut the fuck up cracka.
Ha ha... I knew you'd use the racist line. You're just too happy to cry reverse racism over a word aren't you? I'm not racist. I just think you're a dopey cracka.
@pshinspections Excuse me? Richard Pryor was a master of the craft. His humour wasn't based on swearing, he swore, but there's no way he could be the comedian he was with just using profanity. Rodney Dangerfield was a great comedian, but it's really lame if you have to say another comedian was bad in order to make that point.
@pshinspections Naw, Richard was just as good if not better ...plus Rodney crutch was dogging women and sex jokes Andrew Dice Clay stole his whole style ...alas they where both (Richard / Rodney) great in their own right.
@pshinspections I disagree, I don't think profanity contributes to humor at all. Richard Pryor wasn't funny because he cussed, he was funny because he had genuinely good material. I like them both.
@pshinspections Pyror and Rodney were totally different. Richard did bared his soul to the audience and told his life story. He used profanity not as a crutch but because thats how he actually TALKED.
Rodney is brilliant as well, but he came from a totally different era of comedy, he'd be doing standup for 20years before Pryor started.
You simply can't compare the two, its like comparing Frank Sinatra and The Beatles.
@pshinspections So wrong. I love both of them equally, but damn you missed the point with Pryor. That is why when a list is given of the top 10 or 100 comedian he's either #1 or 2.
@pshinspections ...lol ...you didn't really listen, or pay attention to Richard Pryor. He was a great story teller. Listen to Mudbone (lil feet). The profanity was and is a modern comics way of "keeping it real" Lenny Bruce was probably the most innovative comic of the early 60's and Richard just piggy backed on it. Richard Pryor also aimed his humor at a Black audience (at first) for obvious reasons.
@pshinspections completely disagree (except that Rodney is great). Pryor was a comic genius who swore...he was funny with or without it. If you can't allow yourself to see past the profanity then I can see how you'd feel that way, but don't lay your hangups on Pryor or the people who love his humor.....whether he fucking swears or not...
@pshinspections Pryor did tons of great comedy long before he cursed. When he did cuzz it was often times him impersonating the people he experienced growing up, his dad, his grandma, whinos, street hustlers, cops, bouncers etc. t was not a crutch it was reality so in that taditon, FUCK YOU!
@pshinspections Rodney was absolutely profane you must remember in the era when Rodney burst on the scene he was very much over the top for alot of people.
@pshinspections You are a fucking idiot. If you said that about Eddie Murphy, I would agree. Richard Pryor was fucking brilliant. He didn't even tell jokes, he commented on life and issues. Rodney couldn't do that. He was a schtick comedian if there ever was one
@Gilch30 Pryor put the fucker in mother fucker. It's hard to make a adult laugh with out profanity.Rodney made it look easy.Pryor was a shock comic. He made laugh's from having the ball's to say what he wanted. He touched on subject's that only a black person would have relevance to.Rodney was what he was a comedian. He was not out for racial or social free speech.Pryor is over rated, even Redd Foxx was funnier.
@pshinspections Pryor started out clean. One could remove the profanity from his act, it would still be funny. Rodney could do clean and dirty. IT was his gift. George Carlin could also do clean and dirty, he started out clean, then went dirty.
Dice Clay uses profanity as a crutch, and it shows. He's washed up now, because he never went outside of his comfort zone, and his act, like every non evolving comedian, grew stale and died.
The day after Rodney appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno He turned 80 years old & had a heart attack.
He lost consiousness & he awoke shortly before going into surgery. They were wheeling him down the hospital hall when Rodney looked up at the Doctor & said "Who's Present Was That"
He was warming up the audience at the Ed Sullivan show (that's how u auditioned) & its the only time ever that Sullivan came out to watch a warm-up because the crowd was in a frenzy, then Ed came out & laughed. The harder that Sullivan laughed the more the audience went bonkers. The comic booked for the show that night was bumped & the rest was & is history
This show seems like a metaphor, i'd like to think he just takin a vacation in a better place. He was really a nice, respectful and formal man rest in peace my brotha
realtime88...thanks he was one of the true greats!his movies are classic caddyshack and back to school, easy money.good to see all his work appreciated.
I couldn't agree more. I just bought his autobiography. I'm laughing so hard right now. But I know I'll cry at the end. Rodney made us all smile even on a bad day. He was such a professional and such a gentleman. I miss him so much.
I saw him answering questions at the hospital just before he died. A guy asked him "How long will you be in here Rodney?" He replied "The Doc says if everything goes okay I'll be outta here in a couple of weeks, If anything goes wrong, I'll be outta here in about an hour and a half!" God bless him, he was the BEST!
I had the priveledge of seeing him live at Dangerfield's.Almost pissed in m pants. He had some choice words for my wife, when she nodded off during the show.He really let her have it.The audienc cracked up.There will never be another like him!R.I.P.Rodney.We miss ya!
Same here, I didn't know who he was until this episode aired either and then after that he passed away. Now everytime I see him I laugh at the start and cry at the end. Rodney Dangerfield is a legend.
Rodney was so great. Still does his famous one liners so well. He loved his life and other comedians though. That was cool. I miss him. RIP Rodney. Thanks for letting us laugh at ourselves.
I saw a skit on SNL right after he died. A tribute to Rodney. It brought a tear to my eye. When I was a little kid, and he would come on the Johnny Carson show, I was always laughing hysterically. I really miss them both.
I remember seeing him one last time. I think it was on Connan O'Brien and it was kinda sad because he was trying to be funny and he just seemed out of it. You could tell it was going to be one of his last appearences. He is missed.

It's to bad that a legend like Mr.Dangerfield had to have his last appearence on a shit show like the one in question.
That was hands down the one and only thing funny on "Still Standing".
