The ethereal, pure tone and perfect legato of Melba's voice are nowhere more evident than in this recording. Although the style may not be as authentically French as that of Henri Legay, the silvery timbre of Melba's voice and her fabulous technique and breath control, especially as heard in the concluding trill and final phrase, "mourir," more than compensate. Thank you, Doug, for sharing this treasure.

Not to mention that unique Melba sense of rhythm, the same rare quality that made her Tosti Matinatta unique.

There are a couple of Aussi diphthongs in this that made my eyelashes curl, but the lilt and floated grace of her singing are irresistible.

In one sense, the recording is all wrong: the French pronunciation, the style, even the fact it is a tenor aria. And yet, at the same time, it is so right! Another part of the enigma of Melba, the singer and the person.
