(BTW, some will say you can go into the 90s on the degrees. This is only in irregular rites of Memphis-Misraim, and they are not valid or recognized degrees. Tell a Mason you are 96th degree, and he'll laugh you out of Lodge. If anyone further tells you there are 360, they are flat wrong. Invite them to supply a list above the 96th degree.)

The reason we keep secrets is because the mass of human society are not prepared for the Light of Masonry. It would only be abused by those who are not ready (the way religion is). It would be akin to giving a child a lawnmower - while it is a highly-useful tool, the child risks seriously hurting themselves because they're not prepared to use it.
The 33rd Degree is not secret, nor is there child sacrifice and "blood". It is simply an honorary degree. The highest degree you can EARN is the 32nd.

The woman Mona is wrong. I am a Jewish Freemason, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite (actually have truly done ALL of the degrees, not a one-day class of partial degrees) and Master of my Mother Lodge. There are so many inaccuracies in this exchange that it is stunning. As for "stealing from Kemet" mentioned below, I'm afraid it is much deeper even than that...
