even a small project like my 1970 IH cub cadet 124 that im doing is allot of work. you would be surprised how many hours i have into it. i love those little old garden tractors, they are made so much better than the junk that is mass produced today. i went throught the same process on my little tractor. strip down to bare frame, sandblast heavy rust, hand sand to remove sandblasting roughness, prime, paint, wet sand, paint again, wet sand, final coat, its allot of work i cant imagine a car.
Unbelievably informative. Make sure you keep us up to date with your work because it hard to find informative interesting videos hosted by someone who grabs your attention for the duration of the video.
I mopped the floor, let it dry, used the vacuum, then put down heavy mil plastic from the home improvement store on the floor to keep dust down. I cleaned the tires with a damp rag as I gradually moved the car into the garage and unto the plastic.
I also always used the wet sanding method with auto sanding including the 1200 paper. I dip the paper in a bucket of water from time to time and that keeps the paper clean.
Kudos on doing it yourself - car guys are usually scared of electrical, transmissions, and paint. :) The one thing I thought I'd note (for other newbies) is your technique with the gun - you should let up on the trigger at the end of the pass. If you keep the trigger fully pulled at the end, you end up with a thicker application of paint in the place where you stop moving one direction and swing back to the other, since your hand sort of hangs there while you switch direction. :)
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Both of your vids on auto paint have been very informative. Have you posted a video of the finished product? Would love to see how it turned out. Also, you mention a you tuber with a mullet that was a "treasure trove" of information. I haven't been able to find him. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
wetting down the floor - I thought that was a must but the gents at the Autobody Store forum said not to do so - urethanes would react negatively to a damp environment - apparently it is a technique that was time proven but with the acrylic type paints of yesterday year.
F.Y.I. Next time water down your floor so you dont get dust flying around your fresh paint .we all know dust is air born so that water on your floor keeps it from flying around your not in a spray booth so now you know..good job
To keep your yellows from looking greenish. Spray a white sealer or base it white first then spray your yellow. Just a tip if anyone was wondering or didnt know.
@robertybob2006 Never compare your work under "Tube " lights florecents are yellow in nature and will give you a yellowish tint to your color always use natural light...like sun or buy natural light bulbs...
Hey Jimmyjamesee I want to let you know that you did an awesome job of explaining the techniques. Most informative video on the painting and prep process I have seen so far on youtube. I like the way you think bud, I'm a subscriber now. God bless!
The work your doing on that BMW 2002 is awe inspiring! its one of my all time fav cars. for an amatuer you show a great deal of knowledge and careful deliberation, which is only matched by your attention and car for such a machine. Keep up the good work! Look forward to some more tips. Dave, UK
I hope that when you are spraying your base coat you are not trying to cover the surface in one coat. You should be spraying 3-4 medium coats of your base. And then with the clear you should apply 2 even medium coats(depending on the catalyst you use)
I give you a lot of credit for taking this on yourself.. I just finished my sons 73 challenger with the t/a stripes.. depending on how much orange peel you have.. I would always start at 1200 end with 2000.. the flatter you lay the clear, the less color sanding you will be doing.. you can get a air grinder, and buy a fitting for it to fit a 4inch buffing wheel onto it, to get into those tight area's.. you'll need to becareful with the speed of it though..
Great video, nice work. This weekend I will be collecting a 75 '02 Tii Lux. Its striped back to the body shell and will need a ton of work, but I can't wait to get started! Good luck when spraying the rest of the car.

can you tell me what kind (brand) of clear coat did you use and where did you get it?
I find getting the clear coat to go on smooth with no holes to be the hardest part?
