If you're careful, you might be able to glue the bottom hem-turned straps, instead of sewing a casing and putting them inside, but I think sewing is a better way. You don't have to use a machine, for this little amount of work. I just did a very simple handstitch, and it took only 15 minutes or so.

Helpful hint: If you can't sew or don't have a sewing machine, hair glue works wonders. It's permanent and after a full day of drying, can withstand washes perfectly. Also, if you cut too much off the hem and your strap breaks, the piece of fabric that was cut off the back can be cut long-ways and stretched to make another strap.

I made this, then I made a tank top with another t shirt. Instead of cutting away at the back I hemmed both sides and put ribbon through at the front and the back and tied it at the shoulders. Looks so cute.

made this for dd. zigzagged around raw edges then folded under for a more finished look. Back gapped open so I think to fix it I might put a seam in the back?? The front looked beautiful just like shown in video. Back just gapped and folded back like it doesn't fit. Make a seam or put elastic in might fix?? Old t-shirt never worn anyway so no loss.

Could you please show Rotation Station from the second book? That one's my favourite, and it's not all that different from the T-Bird halter top. It's the same thing, except with the drawstring tube on both the front and the back, so the T-shirt hem runs through both tubes, and then ties over one shoulder. It's a lot more covered than a regular halter top, and you don't need a really fitted T-shirt to make it.

I DID IT!!! I turned a tee into a halter, but it was WAY too loose (Thanks, Stairmaster!) so I cut down the back, snipped and tied 1 inch sections. Now I have a cool halter with a cool visaul appeal in the back. This was my first DIY and I'm addicted.
