All they could do was get the light needed to tell if the planets atmosphere was like earths(or similar) and has liquid water. Planets around other stars are far to distant to see the planet magnified enough and with enough resolution to be able to see the surface or alien life on it. the closest star to us is 4.3 light years 1 light year is 6 trillion miles so it is over 25 trillion miles away.
