I have used hard wood slugs for years. Usually maple or oak. I basically creat a wood Minne Ball, harden up the business end. Place it into the shell with a patch and cover with tallo/beeswax/candle wax and shoot as regular.
hey dave look up the video How to make your own Wax Slugs for Shotguns and this may help ya out. id upload the actual page but youtube still wont let me do that. hope this helps if u find it
off the top of my head but i think that if you took and old shell 3 1/2 " preferably and take and cut the brass off so that you just have plastic and cut off the crimp. After that cut the shell vertically so you have a shell that you can open . Then take a dime and put it in one end to plug it than put a rubber band around the shell to hold it together. After that take the end of the can with the shot in it and pour your wax in keep warm over fire so it dont solid. then put in shell let hard
My brother told me a story about how he was with his friend bird hunting and they saw a deer so they cut/perforated the shell to make a slug and shot or shot at the deer. Whats up with that? I think it mighty make a good video as it is kind of a hunting wives tale or what not.
Dave, try taking a piece of tinfoil and wrapping it around your shell/finger/stick to make a mold, pour the wax in and then add BB's. Then stuff it into your shell with or without the tinfoil. I have tried this before and get a nice shot with a solid mass of shot in a nice pattern.
For a really solid mass I use wax and electrical tape. Pour the shot into wax as it heats. while your wax heats the shot warms and holds the wax better as it cools. Make a sleeve for the shell with electrical tape. This sleeve is made by wrapping the very end of the shell then crimping the tape over the top after waxed shot is spooned in. If you wrap no more than 1/8th inch of the shell tip with the tape then it will all fire with the load and not gum up the gun.
looks like the cold lead pulled the heat out of the wax too quickly, so maybe either load the warmed balls into the cartridge before pouring the wax on then or just place 1 layer of balls then wax them in followed by another single layer of ball then wax etc.
When I was a kid I helped my dad make some he cut the end off several Shells and dumped all the shot in the melted wax (a mix of paraffin and bees wax I don't know the ratio) then he spooned the shot and wax in to the shell. Most worked but some still blew apart.
this might sound really stupid but it could work to defend your camp get how ever much powder you want then cap it off then put dimes enough to fill the shell up t least half inch from the top
Traditionally 'wax' slugs are made with paraffin wax (which dries much harder and resists coming apart). Bees wax is a little soft.
However - looks like you've created a way to keep the shot load very tight (almost like a super tight choke) and frankly that's going to put a severe hurting on anything it hits regardless :)
After seeing Eric & Barry's videos on wax shells, I began to do some research and think you're correct. Paraffin works much better than beeswax. After the holidays I'm going to try some penetration tests to see how well these shells compare to conventional slugs. I'll probably do a video of the results.
@wildcatactual I'll look forward to that a great deal, we just played with them as kids and didn't really do any 'structured' tests. (Granny used canning wax, which is paraffin, so we had a ready supply) But I think you'll be impressed.
I still think the beeswax has some application tho - I like the idea of something that will give tighter buckshot groups over longer ranges and I may play with that a bit.
This might be crazy, but considering the relative availability of river pebbles and the fact you wouldn't be using your supplies. I guess the question is, would it be possible to substitute tiny pebbles in the wax slug configuration? Obviously not the best long term solution, but in an emergency, because shot and lead run out sooner or later.
@WeaponX831 In an absolute last ditch effort I don't see why not, but that is as a last ditch effort only man. Sending stone through a barrel would chew it up quicker than a fucked up private at basic training.
woahhh i got a idea take a slug and cut it in half then load the round with blackpowder plug it the put one half of the slug then regular shot then the second part of the slug and seal it!
it helps to heat the shot in with the beeswax. the heated pellets will keep the wax liquid long enough to pour it directly into the husk. it also seems to work better with a smaller pellet size (no. 4)
Flippin great vids you inspired me to go out and do the same, this is good also for SHFT real world situations, and zombies jus kiddin. but im stocking up because its cheap to make and good for survival situations im glad i caught this vid keep it up
Load stays together as a solid mass during flight and then breaks apart on contact delivering maximum energy to the target with devastating effect - bit like a hollow point.
What about duct tape around the dog turd? wouldn't that survive the blast better than the wax? or maybe in addition to the wax... so, dog turd, wax, wrap in duct tape.. ??
Dave , try adding the BB's to the pot when melting the wax. Then then just spoon them over to the shell. warm metal will not harden the wax as fast as we say in the video.
@Gastornik yes yes yes u mix the shot in the pot with the wax not in a seperate cup so it gets hard outside of the shell. and tho i know pplz probably wouldnt have them in the field the plastic shot cuos would help here if u had some
I don't see what would be wrong with getting lead hot & using that to hold bbs together, would use much less lead. Or you could melt aluminum or plastic even. You can melt layers of bags into a pretty hard sheet of plastic & use that as a case. Could wrap with wet raw hyde & then let it dry.
On the milk jug blow up you had total energy release into the jug & water stopped it which may not penetrate well enough on deer sized game to kill quick enough it doesn't take off & take a long time to die
ive read somewhere that its possible to make or reuse primers. pulverize the heads of strike anywhere matches and make a paste by adding water, let dry and use that as the load...do you think that would work? and lets say i dont have any gun in an emergency situation and want to make a shotgun out of a steelpipe..ie no modified choke...what ammo would you shoot?
Instead of paper you can try a piece of plastic bottle. When you heat it, it shrinks and will hold the bbs tight. And plastic bottles are easier to find this days into the wild then the bee wax.
a cylinder bore works best because a choke narrows and breaks the wax. also the use of a wad not only keeps wax from your charge but also keeps your projectiles together into a single mass. i carry a mossberg 500 with a 18.5 inch cylinder bore when ever im in the woods. it can be found used for 200$ and provides many options.
Sweet vid dave, i bet it the round would remain in tact even better, if you combined the two methods. By that I mean, place the paper in that aluminum can bottom you were using first, then combine the hot wax and shot together in the paper, then fold the paper up around the shot + wax, then seal the paper in wax again. This should really keep the round grouping tightly.
I have to wonder what it'll be like if you had taken a bunch of nails and shoved them in there. possibly (if you can make them fly straight) that will make a great killing spread rather than a focused one but either way wherever a nail hits it is likely to kill so if you can fit a few you are likely to kill a bunch of rabbits or a larger game... maybe ;)
hey dave love your videos and your showreally like the one from my area in eastern ky.
anyway I think your problem with the wax is the heat from the powder charge is melting the wax and the taper of the barrel is breaking it up if you want a slug from ready material try a piece of wood a piece of green oak or poplar might work real well for you . Brenton Moore
I don't know if anyone else suggested this idea, but I'd think combining the two methods you just attempted work work even better. Pour some hot wax into the dog turd before you twist it up tight, then dip it in the wax a few times to seal it off?
I believe you need a "gas-check." A gas check, used in reloading lead bullets, is a brass cap at the base of the bullet. It prevents the hot gas from the powder melting the lead bullet. Try putting a dime [from the $1.80] loading before the BBs, then wax them. The dime should keep the gasses from melting your wax. Keep trying!!
hey dave i got a suggestion what about making a wooden slug or a couple of wooden disks, cut/ sawed from a sapling or some fallen sticks that would fit in the 12g hulls. you could use like maybe three wooden disks stacked on each other, with or without wax in a load or just one long piece of wood
David, try plasticising the beeswax by mixing it with fine ground charcoal. The same way that you plasticise pine pitch for mounting a spear or arrow head.
I like watching your videos. I would appreciate if you could be a little more specific on the distances. Rather than saying a few passes or a few yards maybe say 10 yards, 30 yards etc. Thanks
i think the main problem is that bee's wax is not the strongest material, so when you shoot all the force is breaking the bee's wax so its not holding well. its like when mythbusters tryed shooting wood or wine out of a cannon, the object breaks up before it leaves the barrel. you are also super heating the wax so it is probably melting as it leaves the barrel.... just thought i would put my 2 cents in.
You're suppose to heat up shot, put hot shot on wadding, pour hot wax, hot wax evenly coats and joins all shot. Your shot isnt hot and its solidifing diferently?
hey dave im not shure if this would work because of the powder load but i know theres a shotgun round out right now that has 3 buck shots in it and they are behind a slug...i forgot wat the round is called but all it is like i said is a slug folowed by 3 shots of buck...awsome video dave...love the 21LH series
I've seen paraffin suggested several times, and I understand you're trying to simulate something you would have available in the wild which is why you're not using it. Have you thought of using pine pitch? Very much available in the wild, and it might hold up a little better.
you have to heat the shot and the wax together. So that thw wax flows all around the shot.If you dont heat the shot, the wax wont flow around the shot completly.....
@tacticalfirefighter3 I know Parrafin would work better we are trying to simulate as close to Animal tallow from a Deer or Cow so we are using beeswax. I am trying to stay with as musch as I can that would be easily accesable, candles may be available as well you are right but you may not want to expend them for this?
Dave, I've been watching these 12 ga. vids for the last couple of days and I have another suggestion. May try this myself as I'm sure you're getting tired of revisiting this. What if after your powder and patch is sealed and dry; pour melted wax into the shell until full, while it is still in melted state pour your shot into the melted wax essentially making one solid load; the excess wax will pour over. -Matt
Cool, I'm watching you and Cody on Discovery at the same time I'm watching you here. One question What the H do you know about a big fatty? LOL. Sounds like the 70's!
Just throwing a "whatif" out there. You could use copper tubing from air conditioners, its pretty malleable, chop the tubing into One inch sections using an Axe, hammer it into round shapes, carry it in a pouch. The pieces could be used as fishing weights.
hey dave love the vids exspecially the whole longhunter series hope to see alot more soon , hoping to get the new england single shot 12 ga for christmas.
You could cut up nails for shot or wrap short lengths of nails with paper and wax to make a slug.. Nails are everywhere and would be the most likely source of survival projectiles..
If the wax is holding the shot together, then the wax might hold small pebbles and a little sand to improve the aggregate and how the wax slug performs. We would then have a load that even Mother Nature would love. Several mixes of aggregate could be tried. In cement, crushed aggregate seem to work best, and only sand is used in mortar. Because the density of this load is much less than it would be using steel or lead, the slug might work best if made as long as possible to compensate.
@InTheSticks0001 If we'd like to continue to shoot stuff, which I do, then a poor mans version of a bean bag round as a ' less than lethal' round could be rigged up. Personnel shot during training with this round experience great deal of pain when hit in heavy muscle of the leg. Do not use bean bags on soft tissue such as is present in the area of the torso. It's only ' less than lethal if used' correctly. The blunt force trauma should work nicely on small game and sure beats using a rock.
Bean bags of different sizes could be constructed as needed for different game and powder charges. I would start by loading sand or pebbles into a piece of cotton and tie it off, using the tied off portion as the tail. The diameter of the 'sand- pebble-bean bag' should be somewhat greater than the bore and hopefully the gas doesn't cut the bag or escape around the bag. Of course wax could be used to make it solid or seal the bore, but we may someday be out of wax?
Have you thought about using melted milk jug instead of melted beeswax to hold the shot together? I think the wax is melting from the heat of the black powder. I don't think the milk jug would melt so quickly.
I love this series of videos. I never had much use for black powder weapons but suddenly I find myself very seriously eyeballing an H&R single shot shotgun.
It would be interesting to see if you could launch an arrow. One critical safety would have to be that the arrow did not seal the barrel. If you're launching something that has more mass than the original max load, you would build higher pressure (DRAM?) than the gun would handle, so the pressure would need to be able to blow by the arrow. Heck, I'd guess that you could get good results with 50gr of powder.
You're the Man Dave!!! I've learned soo much by just watching your videos over the last couple years! Actually i'm watching the Baja episode of "Dual Survival" right now! Peace Brother.
In a survival situation couldn't you use epoxy or JB weld to hold the shot together? for that matter, couldn't you make a slug out of JB weld alone? Seems to me that most hardware stores carry it, and a lot of mechanics already have some in their tool boxes as well.
Dave, I couldn't even watch the video. As soon as it started I paused to comment. Love that hat, where can I get one of those? Ok, now I'll go back and watch the video. God bless brother.
I see you are getting a lot what-if-this and what-if-that responses that are all very interesting. Can you substitute the wax with animal fat like talon?
Also I been wanting to ask: is that the jacket you wear the Columbia Field Jacket? I been looking for something like that in wool; love the elbow patches that are very useful for what I do. I also been looking at the Stormy Kromer/Mackinaw Coat.

hey dave i got a suggestion what about making a wooden slug or a couple of wooden disks, cut/ sawed from a sapling or some fallen sticks that would fit in the 12g hulls. you could use like maybe three wooden disks stacked on each other, with or without wax in a load or just one long piece of wood
stealthppk 3 months ago
David, try plasticising the beeswax by mixing it with fine ground charcoal. The same way that you plasticise pine pitch for mounting a spear or arrow head.

I like watching your videos. I would appreciate if you could be a little more specific on the distances. Rather than saying a few passes or a few yards maybe say 10 yards, 30 yards etc. Thanks

I think warming up that little cup (and the shot) would have kept it from solidifying as fast.

wow DAVE, how big is the tarp over your teaching area? i'm gonna put one in my 10 piece kit...LOL
evcrawfish 3 months ago
i think the main problem is that bee's wax is not the strongest material, so when you shoot all the force is breaking the bee's wax so its not holding well. its like when mythbusters tryed shooting wood or wine out of a cannon, the object breaks up before it leaves the barrel. you are also super heating the wax so it is probably melting as it leaves the barrel.... just thought i would put my 2 cents in.
good luck brother

I wonder how wood dowels would do as a slug
MossyOaksCowboy 3 months ago
Success!! Alright Dave! Now if you just spoon feed the shot, a little wax & a little shot, I think it'll hold together better.

the shot is cold...have to heat the shot
RedBowel 3 months ago
You're suppose to heat up shot, put hot shot on wadding, pour hot wax, hot wax evenly coats and joins all shot. Your shot isnt hot and its solidifing diferently?

I wonder if hot glue would work? cheap, easy to find and more heat resistant than wax.
SwampRatProductions 3 months ago
hey dave im not shure if this would work because of the powder load but i know theres a shotgun round out right now that has 3 buck shots in it and they are behind a slug...i forgot wat the round is called but all it is like i said is a slug folowed by 3 shots of buck...awsome video dave...love the 21LH series

I've seen paraffin suggested several times, and I understand you're trying to simulate something you would have available in the wild which is why you're not using it. Have you thought of using pine pitch? Very much available in the wild, and it might hold up a little better.
achborkah 3 months ago 16
@achborkah thats a good idea you could even glue together some small pebbles for shot
jeeperscreepers71 3 months ago
@achborkah i would like to see that test as well pitch is very available
midmiwildcrafter 3 months ago
you have to heat the shot and the wax together. So that thw wax flows all around the shot.If you dont heat the shot, the wax wont flow around the shot completly.....
WezleyB 3 months ago
Could you use the dollar eighty load and use the wax to hold it together so its just one big slug made of dimes??

Parafin works better
tacticalfirefighter3 3 months ago

-Matt

Just throwing a "whatif" out there. You could use copper tubing from air conditioners, its pretty malleable, chop the tubing into One inch sections using an Axe, hammer it into round shapes, carry it in a pouch. The pieces could be used as fishing weights.

cyclist01222 3 months ago
You could cut up nails for shot or wrap short lengths of nails with paper and wax to make a slug.. Nails are everywhere and would be the most likely source of survival projectiles..
hunt458 3 months ago
Dave it looks like your getting a little "jolly" in the stomach if you know what i mean ,but i think is just the jacket.
TheUprisingNinja 3 months ago
If the wax is holding the shot together, then the wax might hold small pebbles and a little sand to improve the aggregate and how the wax slug performs. We would then have a load that even Mother Nature would love. Several mixes of aggregate could be tried. In cement, crushed aggregate seem to work best, and only sand is used in mortar. Because the density of this load is much less than it would be using steel or lead, the slug might work best if made as long as possible to compensate.
InTheSticks0001 3 months ago
@InTheSticks0001 If we'd like to continue to shoot stuff, which I do, then a poor mans version of a bean bag round as a ' less than lethal' round could be rigged up. Personnel shot during training with this round experience great deal of pain when hit in heavy muscle of the leg. Do not use bean bags on soft tissue such as is present in the area of the torso. It's only ' less than lethal if used' correctly. The blunt force trauma should work nicely on small game and sure beats using a rock.
InTheSticks0001 3 months ago
Bean bags of different sizes could be constructed as needed for different game and powder charges. I would start by loading sand or pebbles into a piece of cotton and tie it off, using the tied off portion as the tail. The diameter of the 'sand- pebble-bean bag' should be somewhat greater than the bore and hopefully the gas doesn't cut the bag or escape around the bag. Of course wax could be used to make it solid or seal the bore, but we may someday be out of wax?

HAVE YOU THOUGHT TO USE ANIMAL TALO INSTEAD OF BEES WAX AS ITS PROBABLY MORE READILY AVAILIBE??

Have you thought about using melted milk jug instead of melted beeswax to hold the shot together? I think the wax is melting from the heat of the black powder. I don't think the milk jug would melt so quickly.

I love this series of videos. I never had much use for black powder weapons but suddenly I find myself very seriously eyeballing an H&R single shot shotgun.
032125 3 months ago
It would be interesting to see if you could launch an arrow. One critical safety would have to be that the arrow did not seal the barrel. If you're launching something that has more mass than the original max load, you would build higher pressure (DRAM?) than the gun would handle, so the pressure would need to be able to blow by the arrow. Heck, I'd guess that you could get good results with 50gr of powder.
groundhog686 3 months ago
Thanks! I would not have thought that mixing the wax and BB's would have worked when the others did not. Let us know how the sinkers work.
