This song is actually about his wife, who suffers from an autoimmune disease similar to Lupus. As someone with a similar disease, I can definitely relate. There is so much pain, emotional and physical, and our loved ones struggle with watching our pain and feeling helpless.
I relate. To me this is every woman struggling to get through whatever life brings them. And a man who understands that she can. Men have the need to fix things for us, but sometimes that is not what we need. The person who wrote this song knew this, and Rob sings it true.
i have a friend who has lupus he just told me about himself and about this song i never knew what this song was about until he told me so sad! but i got a lot of love and care for my friend!
Thanks Robb! You said it all, I too have Lupus. And I am so tired of my diamonds falling down. But hopefully with people like you and Julian Lennon talking and singing about this autoimmune disease, more people will become aware and more funding for research will be made available. Anita

@Nurdbabeeif ur fingers hurt all the time n u cant write then how did u write thsi message? n take omega pills... its fish oils itll help take some pain away..
@TheStormyfaith I'm so sorry Stormy. I hate to be the one to say that it's going to get worse but it will. I've been battling Lupus (SLE) & Sjogren's for 12yrs now. It's become decisively worse over the yrs. Remember to: 1) rest when u need it, 2) dishes in sink aren't going to grow legs & run off, 3) laundry won't walk out on strike either. My aunt w/RA & Osteo used to tell me this. It made coping much easier & made me laugh thru the pain.
@TheStormyfaith I don't want this to come off sounding weird but I've been meditating since I was a child & my kids do as well. It's 1 way I can help control the pain when pain meds & breakthru pain meds don't work to help reach a point where the pain's tolerable. It gets worse in winter, esp the cold weather + cold/flu season when we tend to get sick a lot. Stay out of crowds, away from sick ppl, & eat healthy but don't hit vitamins w/o doc b/c immune sys goes n2 overdrive.
@TheStormyfaith The hardest things, as you prob know, is reaching a tolerance for the pain & handling the brain fog. Keep notes in ur comp w/alarms on them. It helps w/keeping up w/dr appts & med changes/doses. Meditation helps push the pain into a state of being tolerable. It won't go away but tolerable is better than writhing in uncontrolled pain. Find that quiet place in ur head & stay 'til you've got handle on the pain. Hot water helps w/hand cramps/electric blankies help too
@TheStormyfaith I keep a heated throw (plug-in type w/timer) on couch at high setting when pain's bad. It helps tremendously. I've got a hydrotherapy spa in a wet room I built but need new filter ($55+/-) & can't afford a new one to replace it yet so I'm not able to use it but, on bad nights I'll soak in my bathtub in water as hot as i can stand it. It helps me; I hope these little things help you too. Don't let dr put u on longterm steroids. It masks other probs that's treatable
This song gets me through so much. About six months ago I was diagnosed with Sjrogrens which is similar to Lupus, at one point my Ana turned up positive with Lupus b/c the disease is so similar. I'm 18 and can't do the things my 65 year old grandmother does. This song reminds me that there are people out there that will love you anyway. My mom dedicated this song to me, bless her heart for putting up with me.
In order to help fight to find a cure for Lupus, please consider making a donation to the Lupus Alliance. It is the one non-profit organization who is fighting for a cure where 100% of the donations goes directly into research and to find a cure. Check out lupusalliancedotorg.
I personally enjoy the acoustical version of this song more than the studio version. It's not as vivid w/regards to showing the effects of Lupus but the sound of how bad it is from someone on the outside looking in touches my heart. It sort of gives me an idea as to how my family feels when I'm in a flare that causes so much pain it hurts to move but hurts even more to stay still. Last night pain was so bad even w/meds I had to soak in hot water; it helped some but I'm never totally pain-free.
I can just imagine how it feels to have someone you love be that way, I never had someone to love. But I do have a heart, I feel bad for even the littlest things that are bad. But why should I care? I care because I know maybe one day I'll have the power to do what it takes to make these little things better, Even if you can't change them I will try my best. I know I can't take life anymore, and I can't get a gf or find bestfriend. But since my life sucks I want to make it better for other ppl.
this song reminds me so much of my best friend. He was so different before losing his battle against cancer. I can barely hear the song w/o crying a little
My mom has a disease related to the one his wife has in the song, and when I first heard this song I honestly just started bawling. This is exactly what it feels like. Small tasks that they used to do become impossible and things like walking or remembering become difficult. You feel like you can't help them, and are forced to watch as they suffer. I'm sure many people can relate to that.
@KatMichelle1 rob thomas's wife has a disease that make her have pain sometimes when she tries to move, and it keeps her from doing some normal things.her being in the ice/diamonds is his way of explaining that she is trapped and her 'diamonds' are her tears and her pain.
@BelieveInPurpleT Also, just as an FYI - any cold on the joints will cause severe joint pain. I have Lupus (SLE - the worst of the 4 types) along w/Sjogren's Disease, Fibromyalgia, & the joint disease, nerve damage, connective muscle tissue damage, & required surgery to remove an organ (gallbladder, not needed to live but pain to live w/o) surgeon believes the diseases damaged as they attack vital & non-vital organs. Summer 2011, dx'd w/inflamed corneas courtesy of Sjogren's.
@720coolkiller Lupi is actually Latin for wolf. It was initially referred to in medicine as Lupus b/c of what is now referred to as the Butterfly Rash. The doctors then believed it looked more like the coloring in the face of a wolf. 10+yrs working in medical transcription for a large teaching hospital in level I trauma, ER, Fast Track (quick-med in ER), autopsies, death summaries...& spending the last 12yrs w/Lupus SLE/Sjogren's w/o knowing I had it or it being n remission b4.
@720coolkiller The fatigue & nerve damage in my right arm is what put me out of the MT field along with the excruciating pain that never goes away; it just becomes tolerable on good days then you're flat on your back or curled in pain on bad days. It's amazing, at least to me, how it's transpired from the Latin of wolf to Butterfly. I guess butterflies makes it seem less daunting than it is.I'm lucky I don't get the rash on my face; I get it on my scalp & calves; comes/goes a lot
@720coolkiller I wasn't disagreeing with you or anything. I was just saying that it's odd how Lupus was once seen in patients as the face of the wolf and then all this time later, newer doctors and scienctists seen it as a butterfly. It's just a bit weird that it would change in such a manner. I thought it was rather curous and kinda funny in a way, even tho lupus itself is no fun but if you can't laught thru tears, what do you have? Not much. LOL! Days that's all keeps me going.
@720coolkiller I attended 1 of top 2 schools in US where grads r allowed 2 test 4 national co's but 90% & less, u don't get job offer; its series of dictations u transcribe. I earned 100%, which is unheard of & hadn't been earned at office I based out of but worked @ home. Med based in Latin. All MDs take it-req'd class. It's odd the change in med from Latin wolf to butterfly. Curious as to why? I spent 11yrs in field b4 Lupus took it away w/Sjogren's helping steal my career.
@720coolkiller Well, just pardon the hell out of me for trying to let you know I wasn't pissed you when you obviously appeared to think I was! Considering me gone and to hell with your feelings along with your ego as it's obvious they're too big to be on the thread!!!!!
@720coolkiller I'm sorry for your loss. I'm a bit quick snippy lately too. Our propane is so low I can't run central heat & still owe a bill so can't get it filled + are hot water is gas so can't afford running out 4 that too. I'm hurting from the cold weather & after 6mos, I'm finally over the infections (sinus, inner ear/ear) but vertigo still here & eyes r hurting like mad giving me horrid headaches turning to migraines. Pain's getting ahead of me & I need to get in front of it.
@720coolkiller On top of that, I'm handling the attys for DH's disability claim too so he doesn't get stressed & ends up having the heart attack that can kill him this time but it's pushing my stress buttons, which isn't good for Lupus/Sjogren's as it makes it worse by tossing it further out of control. My eyes hurt to pt it's causing migraines & I'm more sensative to even smallest light than ever- even notebook screen light. I'm not online as much b/c of it.Need 2 c eye dr again2
@BelieveInPurpleT The closest and best explanation of life with lupus comes from an article called The Spoon Theory. You can find it at butyoudontlooksickdotcom. It is the best explanation I've found so far & I shared it with family/friends who didn't understand why I couldn't go out or do what I did before the disease kicked in even before I knew I had Lupus (SLE) or Sjogren's. It's an amazing article written by a Lupus sufferer.
@PaisleyPlace my god,i'm so sorry to me you are a true hero.and thank you, because i didn't really understand her disease so this will help.good luck and hope this song gives you strength :)
@BelieveInPurpleT Thanks. I hate it took so long to respond. This cold weather & our high propane heat costs (hot water/central heat) leave me no choice but to keep the heat turned back, which causes my joints to seize. Plus, I didn't sleep at all last night or night b4 b/c of the pain. Even w/ pain patch (tentayl), muscle relaxers, Naproxen, & break-through pain meds - it just doesn't give you any slack. That's kinda where I'm at 2day & last few days,it's lupus flaring up
@BelieveInPurpleT You know, it really does. There's days when I'm in a lot of pain to the point it's unbearable, esp cold months. I have electric throw for couch & I have it in my Ipod so I'll curl up in a ball after taking my meds w/breakthrough to help w/pain the patch's not covering & listen while the blanket heats my muscles/joints while meds start working. I've lost my copper Native American tint, hair thins, lft knee/hip ruined so hurts,& I feel 80+ when I'm half that age
@BelieveInPurpleT Now I wish you could explain it just like that to ppl that think Lupus and fibro are not a real illness. It is a hard battle that not many understand.. THey always say well you dont look sick!
@BelieveInPurpleT Now I wish you could explain it just like that to ppl that think Lupus and fibro are not a real illness. It is a hard battle that not many understand.. THey always say well you dont look sick!
@BelieveInPurpleT Wow, I have always loved this song, but I had no idea it had so much meaning. Now I cry every time I listen to it, every word makes so much sense now that I know what's it really about. Thank you for the explanation.
I hope my friend is my friend & not wanting to prove something to another guy - I think my friend is sincere & the best friend I have ever had- I love you
This is the moust amazing song I ever heard. I listen to it every time my life is hard, and every time I`m happy. I get a good feeling when I listen to it, it tells me that everything will get better. I feel that my life is very hard to live, and I often ask my self why it have to be this way. Why I had to be born? I don`t know why, but I know it will be better, and I will wait no matter how long it will take. Because I have this song listening to during I wait
24 people don't like that Rob Thomas wrote a sad, loving song about his wife after they found out she had cancer. What heartless fucking cockroaches! Just appalling!!
@illtardisyourdoctor no they just have different music taste, just because they don't like the same song as you doesn't mean they are heartless fucking cockroaches...

It helps w/keeping up w/dr appts & med changes/doses. Meditation helps push the pain into a state of being tolerable. It won't go away but tolerable is better than writhing in uncontrolled pain. Find that quiet place in ur head & stay 'til you've got handle on the pain. Hot water helps w/hand cramps/electric blankies help too
PaisleyPlace 2 months ago

@PaisleyPlace you do know Lupus means wolf right?
720coolkiller 2 months ago in playlist epic song's!!
PaisleyPlace 2 months ago
@720coolkiller The fatigue & nerve damage in my right arm is what put me out of the MT field along with the excruciating pain that never goes away; it just becomes tolerable on good days then you're flat on your back or curled in pain on bad days. It's amazing, at least to me, how it's transpired from the Latin of wolf to Butterfly. I guess butterflies makes it seem less daunting than it is.I'm lucky I don't get the rash on my face; I get it on my scalp & calves; comes/goes a lot
PaisleyPlace 2 months ago
@PaisleyPlace ok.... i was only jkin around jezzz
720coolkiller 2 months ago
@720coolkiller I wasn't disagreeing with you or anything. I was just saying that it's odd how Lupus was once seen in patients as the face of the wolf and then all this time later, newer doctors and scienctists seen it as a butterfly. It's just a bit weird that it would change in such a manner. I thought it was rather curous and kinda funny in a way, even tho lupus itself is no fun but if you can't laught thru tears, what do you have? Not much. LOL! Days that's all keeps me going.
PaisleyPlace 2 months ago
@720coolkiller I attended 1 of top 2 schools in US where grads r allowed 2 test 4 national co's but 90% & less, u don't get job offer; its series of dictations u transcribe. I earned 100%, which is unheard of & hadn't been earned at office I based out of but worked @ home. Med based in Latin. All MDs take it-req'd class. It's odd the change in med from Latin wolf to butterfly. Curious as to why? I spent 11yrs in field b4 Lupus took it away w/Sjogren's helping steal my career.

PaisleyPlace 2 months ago

BelieveInPurpleT 2 months ago
@BelieveInPurpleT Thanks. I hate it took so long to respond. This cold weather & our high propane heat costs (hot water/central heat) leave me no choice but to keep the heat turned back, which causes my joints to seize. Plus, I didn't sleep at all last night or night b4 b/c of the pain. Even w/ pain patch (tentayl), muscle relaxers, Naproxen, & break-through pain meds - it just doesn't give you any slack. That's kinda where I'm at 2day & last few days,it's lupus flaring up
PaisleyPlace 2 months ago
@BelieveInPurpleT You know, it really does. There's days when I'm in a lot of pain to the point it's unbearable, esp cold months. I have electric throw for couch & I have it in my Ipod so I'll curl up in a ball after taking my meds w/breakthrough to help w/pain the patch's not covering & listen while the blanket heats my muscles/joints while meds start working. I've lost my copper Native American tint, hair thins, lft knee/hip ruined so hurts,& I feel 80+ when I'm half that age
