How could Mary possibly have comprehended all that would happen? Jesus told his own disciples directly that he would have to suffer and die, and they still could not fathom how that fit in with him being the Messiah. Even with the annunciation, Mary thought only that she was bearing an earthly king, one in the line of David, the Messiah. What she had been taught to believe the Messiah would be and do was very far from who Jesus actually was and what he did. She could not have really "known".

This is a beautiful song... to those who are quoting scripture as reason that this song is incorrect and therefore something less, I think the songwriter wanted us to realize that although Mary was told by the angel who this Child was that perhaps she didn't realize couldn't realize the greatness of the one she carried, because before Jesus there had never been a man who healed, forgave, raised from the dead. Without having seen the greatness of Jesus' works, it is possible Mary didn't Know.
