I'm just getting into learning theory, does it sound like syn's playing because its in d minor? I know techniques clearly influence the sound but I'm speaking in terms of how it was composed.

Synyster Gates' technique is really hard to master, in my eyes he is the best guitarist in the world because the stuff he writes is so creative and still technically challenging, so good job on adapting his style

Not many people can come close to being as good as Syn is so many different ways. He's got so much feel, emotion, groove, every thing. He does so many complicated things. Try playing the sweep picking arpeggio in Seize the Day, not easy. Try playing with as much feel and emotion as Syn, not easy. Try PLAYING Avenged Sevenfold, not easy.

Also, its not sweep picking in the solo for scream you dumbass, its a 1st and 2nd string alternate.

@LtotheULZ well the dvd is on syns style , licks similar to syns licks, rythms are similar, so as far as writing I think is possiblefor him towrite something similar considering he uses this techniques,scales ,etc. As far as chops, wellhis pretty awesome god hates us solo for example, welcome tothe family solo and of course the afterlife solo, MIA solo to name a few. Hes one of the most skilled guitarrists, and hes and awesome songwriter aswell, theres no way u can"talk down to him" .

@dashfront21 yeah he was a very creative, but very sloppy player in the CoE days. Now he's extremely clean. I would say Syn is an extremely dimensional guitarist... more dimensional than most "metal" players that people blow loads for haha

He chooses his notes tastefully... While some metal hack would shred the Seize the Day, Victim or Dear God solo, Gates plays with taste. I don't know how you can say "his solos all sound the same."

@DreamTheaterization You don't need to bring other people down if you personally dont find him as exceptional as a Steve Vai or a Satriani. Even if you dont like Synyster its fine cause many people do and trying to shoot him down on a "How to play like Synyster Gates" video isnt gonna get you any good feedback. Even if he isn't the best he was an incredible inspiration on the new era of metal. His harmonies and use of chromatics in solos give him his own unique sound. Which to me is exceptional.
