  • !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • as a matter of fact, one of their best songs.

  • Masters at work.

  • Entering the venue, the first thing I noticed was the TWO sets of drums set up on the stage. Knowing nothing about the band. Until the moment Phil started playing along CT. I still get goosebumps to this day. Thanks to you tube posters for keeping old memories alive. Especially this, my ALL TIME favorite song by my ALL TIME favorite band, GENESIS!!!

  • Fucking beautiful...

  • Chester Thompson ,fantastic drummer! Did a stint with Frank Zappa , man he was a demanding difficult genius to play for

  • I agree "trashcanalive " it doesnt do justice too the live performance. still sends a chill up my neck when watching though, best gig ever

  • It doesn't really show up on video but at 2:18 the whole venue suddenly lit up pink. It was awesome. Best gig I ever went to, along with Led Zep at Knebworth the year before.

  • I saw them on this tour, in Ipswich - the live sound was fantastic

  • Great!!!

  • That fabulous final bass line was mixed so far back in the studio version I had a shock when I discovered it live.

  • Do you feel my big Taurus pedal?

  • The best in the world.

  • Sempre grandi, inarrivabili, grazie mrdodo

  • i`m going gung ho about this piece.

  • I numeri uno....nessuno si può avvicinare ai Genesis!

  • One of Tony's best.

  • @kamwrites - I believe this was one of Mike's compositions. Mike, Tony and Steve have all written music that creates that cosmic tug for me. Sounds Hippyish but I can't think of another way to put it - something that lifts the heart above the humdrum.

  • @RaysTrack It's Tony's. Mike's referred to this song as "Tony's baby" and Tony himself said he had a moment of panic while writing it, because for a bit it sounded like "Have yourself a merry little Christmas"...LOL! Either way, it's an awesome song.

  • @RaysTrack Ho no !!! Tony is the man behind that song.

  • Excelente rola progresiva, solo Genesis lo podría crear

  • Moog Taurus Rules.. . :))

  • How could you dislike this? Clearly the glass is always half empty for you. Brilliant.

  • This was the first tour that I saw them live, I had just seen Gabriel live (twice) before and loved the shows.

  • La meilleure version de ce morceau est sur l'album second out

  • probably phil collins most passionate post gabriel phase kind of fresh.after a while genesis sounded a bit overdone......not this one.so much heart!

  • My biggest regret is not ever going to see Genesis live. In my eyes they are simply the best, no body even comes close. Phil's voice always brings me out in goosebumps.......simply phenomenal!!!!!!!!

  • @Brijones1968 I hear ya. I've not seen them live, never had the chance. But remains my all-time favorite band! Thank goodness for concert footage.

  • perhaps..the finest of 80's Genesis....from Rome. Bye

  • Amazing, but the best version on youtube is Live at Stadthalle, Vienna 28 Aug 1978. Also there are some 1977 clips from Earls Court 1977 whic are amazing,

  • @yesshows100 we need more of the 77, 78 tours!

  • I managed to wear out my first copy of Seconds Out on cd because I played it so much. I'm didn't think it was possible but I had to buy it again. You really should have it if you don't already. It is a pity they didn't think of filming it at the time.

  • Phil....eres grandisimo...

  • beautiful

  • Brilliant! I saw them in Knebworth the year before - so nostalgic

  • Glad to see that Itune has finally the whole secondsout album on sale now!

  • So moving, pure musical brilliance

  • I balled my eyes out .

  • Fantastici!!!

  • Maybe the best Genesis song in the post-Gabriel's era along with Mad Man Moon. This is still genuine Genesis inspiration.

  • The best way to tears!!!!Wonderfully!

  • first heard this in the late 70s...always stuck with me great song...cheers eve

  • Magnificent band!

  • You are so right.. Brings me to tears. I still remember a new years party in my basement (1985) me and all my underage friends, drunk and watching this on a VHS (yes VHS) cassette. Standing in front of the television screaming this song. Watching Phil and Chester play together brings back GREAT memories.... thank you for posting

  • I used to listen this powerful music in LP. Live is great too.

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis The Lamb Live at the Shrine 1975 3-disc 2CD/DVD set, Genesis Live in Montreal 2CD set, Genesis Live in Zurich 1977 2CD set available at Tommygun Video - please visit our youtube channel ClassicrockDVD for link, video/audio clips, more details

  • This was truly a great band as good as YES

  • getting older isnt all bad - saw these live years ago - boybands of the world hang your heads in shame you untalented fiascos!

  • The perfect finally to a show!!

  • A SONG MADE IN HEAVEN.

  • I don't think there's one shot of Mike or Tony in here...Mike's bass playing at the end is stellar. Tony's orchestration makes the song. "Phil Phil Phil" everyone always cries, he'd have been nothing without them.

  • Genesis from 1977-1982 sounded so good!

  • Its better than sex :-)

  • i cry when i hear this song

  • @Turbulence654321

Me, too. I saw Genesis on the Seconds Out tour. Absolutely fantastic.

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set, Genesis The Lamb Live at the Shrine 1975 3-disc 2CD/DVD set, Genesis Live in Montreal 1974 2CD set, Genesis Live in Zurich 1977 2CD set available at Tommygunvideo - link and more details can be found on our Youtube channel

  • The best version of this song on youtube...moving, really moving.

  • One of the best performances no doubt.

  • "But now, now I've lost everything,

I give to you my soul.

The meaning of all that I believed before

Escapes me in this world of none, no thing, no one"

I'm a grown man for crying out loud but these lyrics and the emotion in Phil's performance almost reduces me to tears.

  • @ricke69 You go, girl! :D

  • Genesis Six Hours Live 1972-1980 2DVD set available at Tommygunvideo see our channel for link and details

  • I started listening to Genesis during Peter Gabriel times & really enjoyed them, but Phil Collins was an amazing choice for Genesis. Duke is my favorite. I have the album, the 8 track, cassett, & now the CD. With the changing times, I understood why they had to change their style. I still followed Peter in his career... Solsbury Hill..oh yeah! Seen them both many times. Good Good Times!

  • @cmnj1234 ..you are right, very, very good times!

  • That's my favorite song from Genesis. It's simply amazing. I can here it over and over again.

  • I saw Genesis in 1984 in Calgary, Canada, I had been a Genesis fan since 1973 when a cousin from the UK introduced me to their music. The '84 concert was incredible and they remain one of my favorite bands along with the Eagles, Moody Blues, Emerson, Lake and Palmer and several others. There have been excellent bands since and before, but Genesis had a creativity like no other band.

  • This Band was awesome ! - This song great ! ....... and then after Duke ...........every creative atom from Genisis evaporated leaving a dead comercial soul less carcass

  • @purchasepete Absolutely agree with you 100% purchasepete. I still think Duke was brilliant; it had that Trick of the Tail spirit in it. Then Abacab, lI love the intro to the album for about the first minute, then ... down the drain. Spirit gone, never to return. It's oddly coincident with when the band got their own studio ... and the start of Collins' solo career. So many changes, turning 30 and all that.

  • I agree with apps1979.

"the meaning of all in that i believed before

escapes me in this world of none.

    I MISS YOU MORE!"

  • Greatest Genesis song ever! <3

  • Fabulous tune...brings back such memories of some great days gone past.....

  • Oh yes, only Gemesis!

  • listening over and over again... still the "anthem" for me...

  • @insafee

You're right - over and over again! But that applies to so many of their songs - I simply can't decide which I love most...

  • Like the dust that settles all around me, I must find a new home. The ways and holes that used to give me shelter, Are all as one to me now. But i, I would search everywhere Just to hear your call, And walk upon stranger roads than this one In a world I used to know before. I miss you more. Than the sun reflecting off my pillow Bringing the warmth of new life. And the sounds that echoed all around me, I caught a glimpse of in the night. But now, now Ive lost everything, I give to you my soul...
  • One of my favourites.

  • beautiful....

  • this song was in the time 1984, when i lost my great love....hm...WHATEVER the music and the lyrics...its still GENESIS

  • still great ! still great ! still great ! still great ! still great ! still great ! still great !

greetings from an old progger (45);-) from berlin

  • Saw this tour at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA and was blown away!

  • avery time I hear this brings tears to my eyes and I am a dude. the power of music is the greatest invention of mankind ever

  • @darryldelay ......Dude..,aww I agree,,,,,, this is gorgeous too

  • His voice is pure feeling

  • is phil better than peter?

  • When Peter was at his best, nobody could compare to him, but he also seemed 'out-of voice' more often than most.

  • This is ALL Tony Banks - doesn`t matter if Peter Gabriel or Phil Collins (both great) sings.. Genesis` soul is Tony Banks

  • @cmedei exactly Genesis's soul is Tony , it seems all we fans have some kind of colective concience and we do have feel that about Tony all around the world...!

  • I love so many Genesis songs, most every one. But, Afterglow has always been one of my top favorites, from the time it came out. Wind and Wuthering is definitely my favorite Genesis album too. And I have personally played Afterglow in my own shows for many years. I love doing it for people who only are aware of the more mainstream, hit Genesis songs, to turn them on to a real Genesis classic!

  • I saw them perform this five times from 77-83, always in smaller arenas and auditoriums and the way the bass pedals buzzed the seats and the sound just elevated the whole place, I remember it like yesterday. I just don`t think the larger outdoor shows create nearly the experience. I miss those shows...

  • This title would put "Fun" into my funeral. I wish it would be played when i go to down.

    Great!

  • Here's a neat game with this song: when Phil starts singing, start singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas." I didn't notice this: Tony Banks pointed it out in the Genesis book that was published recently.

  • Why did you put Phil Collins in the title? This is not Phil Collins, this is Genesis.

I always wondered why Genesis hired that mustache Darryl Strumer? God I can't stand that disco mustache moron!

  • Sure the man has made some VERY questionable decisions about his hair, but his talent on guitar cannot be denied.

  • Speaking of MORONS -> That IS Phil!!

  • Comment removed

  • @MusicStudioTV he put phil in the title because gabriel did this song originally! there is a couple versions or more and also two different singers even both did it together.

  • That would be the day ;) . Afterglow is from the 'wind and wuthering'-album. And guess: without Peter Gabriel. The lamb etc. was the last Genesis album with PG

  • dali mate, Peter Gabriel did not sing the original version "Afterglow", the song is from "Wind & Wuthering", which was the second album Genesis recorded after Gabriel's departure

  • You are wrong, PG had left the year before. But this album is great, like all Genesis 70´s albums.

  • @dalihendrix That is incorrect. This song first appeared on Wind and Wuthering, the 2nd record after Peter Gabriel left Genesis. It is the last song on side 2. I have every Genesis record from In The Beginning through Invisible Touch. I don't have We Can't Dance, but am curious to hear it. Trespass was the first official Genesis record, though the In The Beginning tracks were recorded prior to Trespass.

  • @MusicStudioTV and that you tittled In the beginning was titled From Genesis to Revelation finally .

I also have all Genesis's albums and like you I don't have We can't dance but I 'll bye it soon!

  • @dalihendrix No.. Phil sang it in on "Wind And Wuthering" in 1976 AFTER Pete left

  • @dalihendrix ABSOLUTELY WRONG AFTERGLOW IS FROM WIND AND WUTHERING 1976 , WERE PG DON'T HAVE NOTHING TO DO, HE HAS LEFT THE BAND IN 1974 , AND THIS BEAUTY PIECE IS TONY BANKS CREATION AS MANY MORE !OF HIM SO FAR FROM PG "ERA" YOU MUST TALK WITH A LITTLE MORE OF KNOWLEGEDES ABOUT GENESIS !

  • where are you getting your info from?gabriel absolutely never performed this song!he was long gone well before this was even written.gabriel and genesis reunited for one show in 1982 i believe and if i am correct that would be the only time he and the band would have performed this song, but it was never officially released so who knows

  • @jltjr5 no they didnt but they did do turn it on again with peter gabriel on drums, and then solsbury hill

  • Best song ever!! Years later it is still my favorite of all time.

  • My favorite genesis video and song!!

  • this song can only be appreciated live, one of the best i have ever seen

  • @tammyden Amen to that! I had always loved it on Record or on their Live Records but when I heard it Live for the first time in Chicago 2007, I was literally in tears during that last minute. Absolutely amazing!

  • Para disfrutar...excelente!!

  • Queued for a day for this extra show. Took a dear friend (Louise Mulford) to the show, unfortunately she was killed diving on the Mary Rose shortly afterwards, Brings back some wonderful memories.

    Thanks for the post

  • Wow... I also saw Genesis a little over 2 years ago with a very close friend who died shortly after. My bud Steve was no longer able to cope with life, addiction and depression. He and I both loved this song....

I miss him. sorry for your loss....

  • aprende a tocar phil collins!

  • A very close and dear friend of mine died and this song came out at that time, the words seem to fit perfectly to the moment.

  • Saw this performed live and it can bring you to tears..

The power and magic of Phils' voice is amazing..

  • Einfach nur schön diese Musik

  • AMAZING

  • To anyone who never got the chance to see this performed live, I just can`t describe to you the power of the sound and light show that made this an almost otherworldly experience. This clip is good but a lot of the feel is lost in translating to this format. WOW...

  • You said it... if you haven't seen it live you haven't lived... this is absolutely mind blowing tinglingly awesome ....

  • I was lucky enough to see them five times from 77-87 and this was always in the mix as a part of a majestic atmospheric EXPERIENCE. You know what I`m talking about. It`s rare to get that from any show and they brought it every night...

  • apps1979, not everyone understands:)

  • Duke was a heartbreaker of a set of tunes. Glorious but sad. Kind of like life is . . . sometimes.

Thanks for posting this great stuff.

  • Phil seems to be his best on this performance. All the songs from this show are just so well-done vocally.

  • cette chanson est incroyable surtout quand elle termine en spectacle le medley 'in the cage'

  • this version almost leads you to tears!!!

Best ever Collins' performance, excellent!thanks for posting!

  • @apps1979 yes !!! tears !!! thank you for this post .....

    greetings from berlin

  • amo a genesis ojala vinieran a venezuela .genesis y peter gabriel son lo maximo ,ya peter gabriel vino y fue una noche especial y maravillosa solo falta genesis con phil collins lo maximo

  • sone kake!!! heuelt doch alle rumm ey !! ich will das lied wissen wo se alle wie son trottel hintereinander her laufen..!!!! is niergendwo hier !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! scheiße

  • One of the songs that features in the soundtrack of my journey through life. You can take Phil and Mike out of Genesis but without Tony Banks, there wouldn't be a band. Songwriting genius.

  • How often do you visit Tony Banks' solo career videos here on YouTube? And, what were the names of his last few solo albums?

  • I listen to his CDs in the car along with Steve Hacketts. Favourite Banks solo is Bankstatement. Love Derek Dicks haunting voice. First time I ever heard Market square heroes i thought it was Gabriel. It makes me think of what may have been.........

  • Nice.

  • obrigado por me indicar este video, muito bom nota dez

  • I can only agree with genesisinsideme. Genesis is THE BAND. I have listened to them all my grown life and it occur to me how much they rely means to me. This beautiful melodies end wonderful music comes throw those musicians.

  • And I would search everywhere

    Just to hear your call,

And walk upon stranger roads than this one

In a world I used to know before.

    For now Ive lost everything,

I give to you my soul.

The meaning of all that I believed before

Escapes me in this world of none,

    I miss you more.

  • Some of the best lyrics ever written!

  • A great song (post Gabriel) and sticking very much to the Genesis ethos and trademark sound.

However, in an effort to a wider audience and public acceptance, Genesis did sell out. No question about it. Collins got his way and Banks and Rutherford folded.

  • I will accept that Collins may of been a bigger influence at the time. But, to exist successfully, they had to change with the current music market. Yes, I hate No Son of Mine & Jesus He Knows Me. On the other hand, songs like Fading Lights, brought the trio closer together musically.

  • i must admit that I prefer post Gabriel Genesis. Yes, they went commercial, but still had classic prog songs on every album. I dont believe they ever sold out. Afterglow live is my fave of all time!

  • One of the best songs from the post Gabriel era. Consummate musicianship, interesting sound, especially the bass and keyboards. Wind and Wuthering was an underrated album in my view. Love Genesis still.

  • thre are several songs from the post Gabriel era... this is one of the best but ... Love Genesis still is a beautifull and real expresion to join with all us... Genesis fans in all "eras"... Wind and Wuthering 1976 ... what a marveluos album!

  • yes, this is from Collins era. I love it.

  • @standardpennant Bass pedals

  • If I ever forget why Genesis is my favorite band this song brings me back.

  • HERMOSA

  • Thanks. If the song is interesting harmonically, I like to know it and understand it.

  • Genesis en sus mejores momentos. Hermosa Canción.

  • My favorite Genesis song of all time! When they played it on their last tour I literally cried! A really beautiful song!

  • ignore the harmonic theory, just revel in the raw passion and emotion.

  • SUPER LA GENÈSE COMME TOUJOURS!!!!!! super genesis ,

  • One of Genesis best songs ever!!!

  • Why is Rutherford's bass work so underrated?

  • it is. Awesome bass player and great 12-string guitarist. This bass line sticks in my mind.

  • Comment removed

  • Sono passati quasi trent'anni, ma da allora di pezzi così ne sono stati scritti pochini...!!!!! Straordinari.....!!!!

  • Superb, though sound quality is terrible here, doesn't do them justice. Still, it's awesome for me to see these guys perform live. I did get to see them live in Sydney many years ago and that experience is still vivid my mind and brings back most enjoyable memories for me.

  • Having followed and seen Genesis since those early days, I have to say that for me, they are better with Collins than Gabriel. This tour was brilliant. I went to the London concert. and saw a great band at the height of their powers, with a genius on the drums (vocals).

If Gabriel hadn't left, we would have missed the flowering of his solo career. He remains a musical master. Imagine a world without 'In Your Eyes'

  • I totally agree BigRaddy! Post Gabriel Genesis have some of the best songwriting they have done. Mid to late 70's albums are their best. My fave song of all time is Afterglow. Superb!

  • Genesis has always been # 1 for me!! They know how to play!!!! Wish another band would come out to play like them? But no...no one one can play like them again! Maybe history will repeat it's self? I really do hope so. :)

  • Whitout Gabriel in Genesis grow up individualy and as a band. Genesis became more successfully than Peter Gabriel . With Phill on vocals and drums, the band doesn´t miss Gabriel.

  • C´mon... Is like Pink Floyd have better dissolved when Syd Barrett died... The guys keep going on after Gabriel... That's all... No one was putting a gun to your head to hear them.

  • It's actually more like pink floyd continuing on after roger waters left, considering gabriel had been in the band for many years rather than syd barret who recorded only 1 album (2, if you count the one song of SoS).

  • Dude... Totally true!!!

  • Not that stupid Peter Gabriel vs. Phil Collins argument again. It has been going on on the internet for 15 years, if not more, and probably elsewhere since 1974... Get over it. The people in the band went on with their lives, and so should their fans.

  • @kaols72

the only difference was that back then it took a while to reply on a BBS

  • @SilverBullet93GT I remember :) I remember DOS games released as shareware were free to download via BBSs :)

  • This is a great song, and in my opinion, for what it's worth, the early 80's were when they were at their best live. The informal atmosphere is so much better than a stadium. I saw them at Wembley area in 81, still the best show I've ever seen. The only thing that lets that particular rendition of Afterglow down is the twangy fretless sounding bass. It sounds better with a heavier bass line. But hey, what do I know, I'm not a musician!

  • I know what you mean, Mike usually has a nice warm tone but it sounds a little bit thin and trebley throughout the show. I just wish he would have turn his bass dial up a bit more, same with daryl, his tone on motherlode and dukes travels isn't great.

  • i agree with glasshouse but this one of there greatest songs ever peter or not phil is great on his own right and hackett plays these beautiful chords along with tony banks so who cares about album sales just enloy the music

  • DAMN IDIOTS make me falsely feel like hating army. Till I knew a sensitive soldier ,now serving in Afganistan. A real person is who I encountered.

The ones who mess and brutally anonymously rape an indiviual life and thus IT'S GROWTH are the geheime politie people.

I pity them poor with Joan Baez.

The messed me up for years and years.

Instead of letting life evolve and grow like it is bloody ment to be!

So...I walked upon stranger roads the nthis one...

  • I walked upon stanger roads than this one...
