Education is incrementally more expensive because of all the tax cuts we keep giving to the super rich on the promise that, eventually, they are going to start creating jobs.
There's a couple of factors...one of which schools have a lot of support staff on their payrolls now which they never has in the past. These people really dont contribute to your education but it makes the school look better. The other is the cost to upgrade and build new facilities to "compete" with other schools. Lastly public schools are getting more expensive as states cut funding so we can pay for our prison system that wrongly imprisons people for usong drugs.
Simple. too many people are blindly going to college (higher demand/higher price) with the notion of elitism which is very interesting considering when money/income is the main reason to go to college. However, if the people that go to a place of research for at least 4 years would actually do research, they would find that many of the jobs that are usually deemed inferior make at least 10,000 more than the national avg (about 30,000) and also minus the debt.

I'm a Columbia alumni. My tuition was $17,000 per semester. I graduated with MS degree. I've been unemployed for 2 years. Now I have a mountain of debt. I threw away my money and youth to study. Now I can't qualify for welfare, food stamps, unemployment. I'm fucked. BTW I'm loosing all my stuff, and i'm going to be homeless. Thank you and merry x-mas.
College education is worthless unless you intend to become a doctor, engineer, or architect. You don't even need to go to college to become a lawyer. All other majors are a waste of time/money and guaranteed to get you unemployed by the time you get out of school with a massive debt.
You're better off going to a community college for nursing or trade school than majoring in English/Art/Sociology/History/Biology/Chemistry/Anthropology/Computer Science/etc..

College is expensive because the government provides student loans. If students could not borrow then tuition prices would be kept in check by the students ability to pay cash. That is how it was before the government stepped in. The fed shouldn't be giving home loans, student loans, auto loans .... at all! That is why college is expensive, its because government inflates the cost

So the price goes through the roof. And as more people get college degrees it will be WORTHLESS because now, everyone has one. College is a waste of time and money! Go to trade, technical school. Get a license. Apprentice. Learn a skilled craft. You have SO MANY options.

@d3po17 The value of a college education has plummeted. Logically, you don't pay $50,000 for a 1974 Dodge pinto. So why would you pay that much for college? The fact is you'll end up paying about twice that at a four year school. Nonetheless, the rusty beater of a car even if the engine was blown and the title was missing, would still be a better deal than a four year college education, because it wouldn't take you 4 years to find out you've been screwed. Professors are vectors of disease.
