@agmor1 I haven't heard the director's comments on this. I'd always assumed that it was more of a "Wouldn't this have been funny?" alternative for a DVD feature, that someone had thought up way after production. If this was acually considered for the theatrical release then you're right; common sense prevailed.
But that would make no sense, the whole movie is about good morals and all that shit, the director didn't want it to end like this...it's the stupidest movie ever,it has to have an happy ending.
this pisses me off so much. like i'd really like to say i have respect for the director for wanting this, from an artistic viewpoint, but i really dont. like not at all. this version doesnt even sum up any of the problems in the film. what about kate and peter getting together? what did peter do after he lost? what happened with justin and amber? the unhappy ending sucks, but even if it had that, at the very least it could have resolved some of the problems. thank god the producers changed it.
I saw this ending on the DVD and heard the director's comments about it, and I still don't know how he can justify it. This was intended as a broad, commercial comedy, and this ending felt more like a filmmaker attempting to cram in a left-field, darker ending rather than a finale true to the spirit of the film as a whole. It is one thing for Bergman or Coppola to include a dark ending, but when this guy suddenly has pretensions to art you have to thank the producers for showing common sense.
@joespgriffin I completely agree. Watching it immediately after the film is an hilarious experience.
I think it works really well as a special feature. As a genuine ending, no. It's a joke that's part of the film, and it's not funny unless you know the real thing.
@agmor1 I agree. A comedy is a comedy which is a comedy. There's nothing dark about the movie, and this ending is wayyyy too serious for such a light-hearted, funny comedy. The executives' meddling made the ending more in sync with the spirit of the movie than the what actual directors had in mind. Irony much?
I remember watching this on the DVD and was like "The fuck?" It was funny and yeah pretty realistic but for it to fade to black like that sucked, hahahaha.
Probably the reason i like the ending in the movie more is the fact that White Goodman acts like such a douche the whole way through. How can you want a douche like that to win?
I don't know, I like a more realistic ending with a twist, it's different. But then again I do like a happy ending. And I think it'd be hard to watch a whole film building up to this only to lose. As a viewer it would be almost too disappointing.
@Koroush51 Probably because this ending is grounded more in reality. In truth the underdog rarely wins; except in Hollywood. That being said this scene is a real take on an otherwise unconventional story. When the underdog wins it is usually refered to as a miracle not "A True Underdog Story" as this movie implies. The ending was ok with Average Joes winning but it has all been done to death before. This would have been a much better ending IMO.
In the original ending, the underdogs didnt won, but didnt get a sad ending. The lost the tournament but latter Steve the pirate compensates it by winning the money in the Treasure Island casino.
@XehanortNobody That would have been a great ending as well especially having Steve the Pirate win the money. I never heard about that part to be honest, I always heard that they lose and fade to black roll credits end of movie.
They had info on the whole ending on wikipedia, its a shame they deleted it because they decided "what if endings are not relevant to the article". They were supposed to lose, but Steve would win the money at the "Treasure Island" casino, because they laugh at him and yell "Hey, go back to treasure island!".
So yeah, in the other ending Steve the Pirate was going to be the hero.
@XehanortNobody Yeah but wikipedia is very rarely reliable so I didn't use that resource. Maybe I should have in retrospect. But thank you for the info I will probably do a bit more digging on the subject when time allows. Happy Thanksgiving.
@XehanortNobody. Yeah this ending I didnt mind the Global Gym winning but it was too rushed with no closure after the Championship Game ended here. Maybe have a four Minute review afterwards of what happens as a result....Like showing the Average Joe's guys locked outside there gym since they lost, and Global Gym becoming a big success.
It didnt ended that way in the original one. Actually they balanced each other. Joe lose the game but then remember when some guys said Steve the Pirate "Go to treasure isalnd!" mocking him?
Well he actually went to a casino called treasure island and won there so he got a lot of money for him and joe. But I dont know what happened to the gym in the original ending.
To all you guys who don't get why this is the true ending:
The movie is subtitled "A True Underdog Story". In these kind of sports movies, the evil team always loses. Thus, in the grand scheme of things, they ARE the true underdogs. The fact that the "bad guys" actual won is an underdog upset for the ages. I got it within seconds of watching this ending, it really can't be that hard for the average cinemagoer.. but I guess I was wrong.
Maybe this sour ending would have been memorable.. Instead, to make it memorable, they had to put a fat Ben Stiller to say "fuckin Chuck Norris", which was hilarious even though his comment was true: cinema audiences mostly can't handle complexity.. That was the reason they had to change the ending.
Actually this was the real ending.. It was a couragoeus idea and everybody like it. Then they made a screen test and the public hated it so they went for the other ending. This one was surprising and daring, the other was very common but in line with the rest of the film. Maybe this ending would have been memorable.. Instead, to make it memorable, they had to put a fat Ben Stiller to say "fuckin Chuck Norris", which was hilarious even though his comment was true: cinema audiences mostly can't h
Just an out take I'll wager. You can see a boom mike enter the shot at 1:02. They wouldn't have been able to use it without editing it out or reshooting.
well everyone has their own opinion, but if this was the real ending we wouldnt get to see the kiss by christine taylor with that red headed chick haha
Like hell that'll happen! Ben Stiller will be taken down by everyone in Paradise City all because of this Baka (stupid) ending and all sorts of crap he did! Paradise City does not endorse vigilante justice, but unless it gets results, which it 'Will'
i dont see why this gets to be the better ending, i saw the commentary and the director says everyone loved it except the public. his loathing is evident in the small clip he made with the fat guy ben stiller, personally, its cool to be unpredictable, it was just not doen well with this ending..
i saw the director's commentary on this, he wanted it to be the real ending and when they forced him to change it to a happy ending he almost left the project
@jrack13 I love this ending. I wish they'd release a directors cut where this is the ending to the film. They can put the theatrical ending in the extras menu.
this is like that south park episode where stan has to coach pee wee hockey, makes it to the final game, and ends up going against a professional hockey team instead. stan's pee wee toddlers - who get soundly beaten physically and score-wise - watch a huge celebration for the pro team, and one of the tiny children on stan's team (who has cancer) put all his hope into this game and upon seeing his team lose he just says "no hope..." and dies alone in a hospital bed. the end!
far better ending, very clever and would have surprised the audience unlike the obvious one they used in the film where they win and everything's wonderful which is a classic American ending
its not as funny, but i still like it. if it was supposed to be the real, that would suck, because they haven't tied up the wacko romances, or whether they had the money.
hahaha when ben stiller is standing next to the black dude it looks like that sene from dbz when vegets is standing next to nappa when the dust cleers and the episode ends!
LOL Ben Stiller actually wanted this ending... But test audiences hated it so much he eventually reversed the decision. You guys don't understand, Ben Stiller is a dark genius.
He's also the guy who purposely wanted the scene in where his wife gets smoked with the ball, even if it wasn't really a hard shot in reality.
I don't buy that this was the real ending. There is no wrap up or anything, it just ends abruptly. It seems like they just cut the end off so that they could have an "alternate ending" on the DVD.
