Hi. I have got this same lens, have bought it new about a year ago or so.
I noticed that there is a slight residual noise of sorts when I focus this lens that keeps going about a couple of seconds after focus. You need to listen to it in silence or close to your ear. I wonder if this is normal??
I find this rather weird. Do you have the same noise too??
Well here is my update: I gave away my 40D to my gf, got the Canon 5D Martk II, along witht the 24-105mm L F4, the 17-24mm f4 and .....yes I did get it 70-200mm f2.8 IS USM. now my photography woprld completely changed...for the good...
1) my favourite photos are landscape and portraits, I have this lense ( 17-55mm 2.8) do you think i also should also get the 50mm 1.8?
2) is the 10-22mm a good wideangle lense, im currently looking for a wide angle lense and was thinking to get that one.
3) for wild life park shooting, what would you recommend for a telephoto lense? I need one so Im looking for adivce, I almost got the 17-200mm f/4 but maybe the focal length might not be enough. what do you recommend?
1.) I use my 50mm every portrait session, but not for landscapes.
2.) I'd look into getting a prime wide angle lens. Less distortion than the zoom.
3.) I would get the Sigma 70-200 and get a 2x tele converter for the same price at the cannon f/4. However, for that option to be cheaper you would give loose the IS.
@jonnyfied I've read some decent reviews about the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 if you are still looking for a wide angle lens. The advantage the Tokina has over the 10-22mm is the constant aperture of 2.8 across all focal lengths. Just thought I'd through that out there. I'm dreaming of picking one up myself.
@siliconsurf If I were you I would look into getting a EF 70-200mm f/4L IS USM and getting a 50mm f/1.4 to span the mm gap. When you go full frame I'd sell the 17-55 and get the 24-70mm.
@siliconsurf It's a great lens. if you have the money, by all means. personally i didn't have the money and wanted the f/2.8 so i got the Sigma copy. but if i were wedded to canon lens' family i'd save the $800.
i was considering a 24-70 but it depends what your going to use it for... If you want to go a bit wider i'd go with the 17-55 instead of the 24-70. the 24-70 is way heavier. if you plan on going full frame in the near future then go for the 24-70.
@RyanTheTuber I am currently using a 50D, and im not thinking of upgrading for at least 2 years. i have no problem with the weight, in fact the weight of that lens steads my hand.
I might go for the cheap alternative and get a 24-70 f2.8 sigma for half the price. hmmm.....
@DirtyDubsteppa Your decision depends on your financial status imo. Upgrade your camera body in 3-4 years. I saw a photojournalist(student) in our school still using the 300D
great reviews. i appreciate them, because it's not a review by a company that may be biased to the product - but by another photog like myself!
i JUST bought the 17-55mm lens a few days ago. i was initially going to get the 24-70, but they were back ordered 6 months, which is serendipitious because after reading a lot of reviews, the 17-55 is just as good (except for the body build/quality) and on my new 50D, the 17mm is much more needed - as i shoot weddings and photo journalistic style.
Just curious, how is the 17-55mm lens holding up? I am looking to purchase a lens for my Canon 50d. I also shoot weddings and I'm wondering, would you recommend this lens?
1.) The 17-85 has improved build quality over the kit lens and has a newer IS system, but the optical differences are negligible and the 17-85 lets in LESS light than the kit...
2.) The best third party f/2.8 competitor would be the Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 for 1/2 the price. Best of luck!
Good follow up! thanks!

Very nice vid! May I know the exact model of that lens hood? Thinking of picking up this lens and that lens hood would be a great addition! :)
TIA.

Have you had any problems with dust under the front element? I've heard a lot about that with this lens; also some IS problems after 8-14 months?

Hi nathan, I ended up getting the canon 70-200 mm f4 early today and let me tell you, this is an amazing lanse (so far).
1) so for portraits do you feel that the canon 50mm is more handy than the canon 17-55mm 2.8 ? thankx for your reply

@siliconsurf i have a sigma 24-70 2.8 and let me just tell you, its freaking epic. my images are super sharp and the colours are great. just fyi...
DirtyDubsteppa 1 year ago
@siliconsurf not until you go full frame, I wouldn't. The IQ is a little bit better, but I'd put the money toward the tele zoom you want.
Nathant888 1 year ago
hey bro! considering buying this lens, have you had any problems with zoom creep or dust?
cheers

@asundaralingam No creep. But there are three or tiny specs of dust behind the element..

The ef-s17-55mm is also pretty good,
F2.8 is fast especially with lowlight etc.
Maybe my next lens to replace the 17-85mm.
pisrits 2 years ago
I have a ef-s 10-22mm for wideangle shots and an ef-s 17-85mm for most of the pics on my eos 50d.
The 10-22mm is a really great lens, bit expensive but worth every penny.

Thanks for the video. What do you mean by SS ### when you preface each photo?
motleypixel 2 years ago
@motleypixel
Shutter speed, the the number such as 200. This means a shutter speed of 1/200 of a second.

@motleypixel Thank you! SS=Shutter Speed

Which should I get? This lens or the 24-70mm f/2.8L USM of Canon?
Both are basically the same in terms of IQ and pricing.
Btw, I use a 40D

supra619 2 years ago
I chose the 24-70mm instead of the other
I already have a 18-55mm IS kit lens so I already have the wide-angle focal length covered :D
RyanTheTuber 2 years ago
17-55 on the 1.6 crop is a much more usable focal length than 24-70.
Cicada1337 2 years ago
I got the 24-70...
I honestly think that it's more useful a 17-55
(I own a 18-55[Kit Lens])
Although I do long for a wider focal length:(
ANYWAYS! I am very satisfied with the 24-70. It's just heavy. No matter how young you are, you are going to get tired with the 24-70
RyanTheTuber 2 years ago
yeah; i think sometimes i'd want wider than 38-39mm on the widest end of the 24-70 :o
Cicada1337 2 years ago
@RyanTheTuber i have the same dilema.
DirtyDubsteppa 2 years ago
@DirtyDubsteppa I already bought the 24-70mm f/2.8L and I'm happy with it! It's quite heavy though... even for a teenager like me.

What lens hood is that? Is it a Canon hood?
supra619 2 years ago
i was considering this lens with the 40d or either the Canon Lens EF 24-105mm f/4.0L IS USM. any opinions on that?
philphie 2 years ago
F/4.0 is slow... don't forget that mate:D
F/2.8 (based from my observation) doubles the shutter speed you get from F/4.0
But... I tend to shoot at F/4.0 if the lighting permits it(or at F/8.0, just to be sharp and all).

What about the Tokina 16-50mm f/2.8 DX...?
The Tokina has a build quality as good as Canon L lenses and are specifically made for APS-C size sensors.
