great work...have few questions (english is not my first language):)...1)did you watered down the paint (make it thiner with appropriate contend).....2) how hot was the water (circa)...3)what is Borax....thanks
ok, do you use oil base primer, do you have to paint it a solid color before you dip it, you chose silver, can you use any color for the base. whats the drying time on the swirl before you can clear coat, can you use any clear coat or does it have to be for the oil based enamel, sorry, just trying to get it altogether in one shot, thanks, the guitar is sweet.
last question: this technique can be used on items other than guitars, yes? just thought i should ask before i start dipping clay statues all up into this concoction.
nice swirl man, ive got a couple of cheap copy strats ive sanded and primed ready for the swirl, i have one question about the humbrol enamel you are using is it the satin, gloss or the matt type as the site i was going to buy it from had all three so i was unsure what one to get. thanks :)
No, it was the paint I was using. For everybody out there that needs to know, You need to use Oil Based Enamel! No one comes right out & says that like it's some kind of big secret. And to all the people making wise cracks to others asking......
Well, I'm not going to be a dirt bag with crude remarks!
Use can use RustOleum Oil based Enamel for around $5 a can and get it at Ace Hardware.
Why did all my paint stick to the screwdriver I stirred it with? I'm using Lacquer, is that why? Got the Borax in, temp is around 78/79 Why is my paint gumming up?
@ drumdreamer92. Hey if you have access to anyone that powdercoats have the snare powdercoated the color you want. It looks awesome. It gets an anodized look but the chrome gives the underside a glossy look too.
thats badass!! im wanting to completely redo my epiphone sg special cuz i need a backup guitar that doesnt look and play like shit. i was gonna do the silver basecoat like yours and have blue and purple(both metallic) and a little black
@AlineaSTL yeah thatd be cool. Thats why we painted this cheap guitar cuz hes got a $500 strat too, be he just bought some seymour duncans for this epiphone too so it sounds nice
@GrantLangley what did you guys do to prepare it for dipping? i know that you gotta sand it all down and stuff like that but did you do a primer then sand and paint it silver?
Obrigado
@PanosGuitarHero no, it has a laquer coat over the factory paint job that will cause any paint u want to put on peel off, so you will have to sand that off and completely repaint
I might be wrong but it looks like you needed more borax but I have no idea. You could have used more blue but that's just my opinion. What is it that you fill the trash can with? Water? And mix borax in there? I'm wanting to try this so bad but I want it to look as pro as possible. Please help me.
@badass1300 after you get everything off, you sand it down to the wood then prime and apply your background color. dont put on a clear coat until after dipping though
@GrantLangley and the other colors? sorry but i need to know it. this is the only video that shows how it realy work´s and the other ones don´t want to tell me wich colors they used. the colors have to be oil based or not?
@Mirick666 they all have to be enamel and oil based. we also used fluorescent green and gloss black, but you can use any color of that brand. im about to post another vid swirling my Ibanez with green, pink, yellow, and black.
Could you use glow in the dark paint?

what is borax???? what does it do and do i need it to swirl a guitar
AwesomeFunnyFilms 2 months ago
@AwesomeFunnyFilms
borax = sodium tetraborate
as far as i know it reduces the surface tension of water (and it's not to healthy, in the EU it's now illegal to buy it as a private person)
it depends on the paints you use if it's needed
tried humbrol enamel without borax and it didn't work at all (the paint does not disperse and just drowns after a while if you keep pouring)
started to experiment with marble paints now, they don't need borax
