i never think to push my kingside pawns since that is the defense but i guess if you are kaspararov you can get away with that

after king takes h7, rook to h1. Then black has 2 choices, g6 or g8.
If g6, then g8 Queen. Rook takes g8 and knight to e7 mate. Or if king takes the bishop instead, queen to g7 mate.
If g8, rook to h8, knight takes h8. Pawn takes knight Queen. After king runs to f7, Queen f3-h5 is checkmate. Its forced mate either way

i don't understand the ending..couldn't the knight take the rook that supposedly checkmated the king?

Yes, but then the pawn take the knight and become a Queen,which is defended by the bishop.
The only square for the King now is f7 (where the knight was), and the Queen comes back to g7 (the square where the pawn was) and "milkshake"mate !
