Great hit to the history of the Pop Music. I'll never ever forget this riff on the bass with Bernard Edwards and the death on the next day of this performance. Thanks Bernard Edwards. Thanks Chic.
You see here the legendary bassist Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers on guitar. Bernard did this gig already badly ill with pneumonia and against the physician's council. Nile Rodgers found him dead next day. THANK YOU for the great music, Bernard. Rest in peace.
Do you have the DVD ? Do you have captured the exact same length ? You have the exact same text written which I write before ? (Which is not on the original from the DVD!). You have the exact same small picture size ? BBBRRrrrrrrrr Sure you copied complete this upload earlier from Youtube (my account before)... but ...thanks for that !!!
I looked up Chic on YouTube because I learnt how much Bernard Edwards influenced Duran's John Taylor, and with JT being one of my favourite bass players it was only logical that I sought out this band. I'm so glad that I did.
Ein ganz toller Song von Chic! Ich habe am 17. April Geburtstag - und ein Tag später verstarb das Bandmitglied! Waren das super Discozeiten! Jetzt bin ich 55 Jahre, aber mir fehlt diese Zeit!
I don't think anything has ever reached this level of funk, syncopation or pure groove as this particular song. Mr. Bernard Edwards may not be known by a lot of people, but I really hope that younger people take note of how hard Nile, Bernard, and these other fine musicians worked, and maybe think how easy it is nowdays to 'manufacture' plastic music as opposed to the real thing.
Nothing like this in future will ever sound as great as as the fine people who pioneered this!
@cispolina in part he quoted this: 'Bawitdaba-da-bang-da-dang-
diggy-diggy-diggy-said-the boogie-said-up-jump-the-boogie" from Kid Rock
also at 3:45, "what you hear is not a test cause I'm rappin to the beat, and me, the groove, and my friends are gonna try and move your feet. Because we are the Chic, 'C.H.I.C. ' and we would like to say hello-a. To the white, the black the red and brown, the purple and yellow-a.
I think it amazing that the people who created this amazing funky music are actually rapping to their OWN music, not some UK group, nor lazy rapper group.
Bernard Edwards was actually ill during this performance. Nile wanted to cancel the gig, but Bernard insisted on performing. He still tore it up... didnt make one mistake..... even though he had full blown pneumonia. Amazing! RIP Bernard.
I think this is the final session of the finest music of this era.
Nothing (I think) has been done better in this style of music, and I also regret that many great people cannot be here to show what they have achieved.
I hope that people appreciate what this band has done for music...
@kirbonite The Girl in the gold colored dress is called Jill Jones.
In 1996, she toured performing co-lead vocals as part of Chic with Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards before his death, and can be heard on the 1999 Chic release "Live At The Budokan".
Jones currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She has one daughter.
@kirbonite Yes she is Jill Jones. She was actually in the Prince movie "Purple Rain",she's the blonde receptionist at the club. Also look up the "1999" video by Prince, she's the blonde on keyboards, along with the brunette. She does have a history with Prince, don't know if that's a good thing..
Great classic bass line!! Great bassist!! Tragic loss of a good man! You never know when the Lord is going to call you home. I understand that Bernard passed the very next day from pnuemonia. In fact, I read that Nile Rodgers wanted to postpone this concert and Bernard would have none of it! He'll be graciously remembered!
I love a good rhythm guitarist keeping the funk going during the all the commotion like Niles Rodgers (in addition to his being a great writer, arranger and composer) and the great drummer Tony Thompson (RIP, gone too soon).
@bassistdc What's the problem, Nile is just reminding everyone that the first ever released rap record sampled their music & he did a verse from that song just to pay homage!!!
My gawd, John Taylor always tries to stress about how good Bernard Edwards was as a bassist and it was always a point where he was pivotal in inspiring him at taking up bass in the first place. To be honest, I've never seen him play until this clip. He plays it so effortlessly. Even a pinch more effortlessly than John Taylor and he was the one who inspired me to take up electric bass myself. RIP man, he is clearly the Steve Vai of Funk Bass! John Taylor understated this man's skill!!!!!
i am a bassist, and one of the basslines that i love the most is the bassline in this song.
and it makes me really sad when bassists die... it takes a REALLY important part of the band away... like cliff burton, paul gray, jaco pastorius, and obviously bernand edwards.
Bernard Edwards was a god,... he is well missed,... such a beautiful bass player/producer/songwriter,...his groove, taste,..feel...and his vision for the 'whole picture' of a song is going is going to hard to beat.
@rhythmnationband You are so right, brother. As a bassist myself, I love Bernard's work, but I have to keep it real and give MADDDDD props to the Rhythm God Nile Rodgers too. Nile was KILLIN' those rhythm licks throughout this entire performance, and his ability to drop some lyrics from the Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight" was absolutely brilliant! This, my friend, is music. REAL music.
