Dex didn't waste notes. He had a perfect sense of harmonics. As a lifelong Dexter wannabe, I notice that I waste notes running up to the note I'm trying to get to. But Dex knew exactly where he wanted to go and went there without a lot of fanfare or having to running up to the note he wanted to get to. There's very little filler in his playing. He's concise, so he doesn't have to play tons of 16ths to get where he's going. He plays just the right note, at just the right time.
You mean, Coltrane sounded like Dex. Dexter Gordon was the father of the modern tenor saxophone. If Adolph Sax was around he would have said, "Now that's what my ax is suppose to sound like."
This is probably my favorite version of "A Night In Tunisia". Although, I'm crazy about Brownie's, Bird's and Art Blakey's take on it, too. I really love the way Bud hums along during his solo. He's swingin' his ass off and loving every minute of it! This must have been so much fun for the cats to make.
