I actually found a tape of this at goodwill, and then lost it. I wish I had copied it to my computer, but I guess it's not what you'd call "hard to find".
I've also got Sonic Fury, and should get around to watching that, too. These games are quite humorous to watch, and I'm just itching to get my hands on a working Action Max system, so I can get a good chuckle.
Crappy system. still its nostalgic since I had it and used to play it. Pop's ghostly looked like a two bit haunted house from a traveling carnival.
When they showed the commercial for this on tv it was a clip of sonic fury and showed the planes blowing up when the kid shot at it which was impossible since it was all done on a VCR.
OMG!!!! i haven't seen this in years!!! before i had an nes i had an actionmax. to be honest for the longest time i thought that this game, and sonic fury (a game with if i recall right some bad ass anime instead of live action for the actual game part, but super cheesy actors in the begining and ending sequences) were just something i made up and were not real. thanks so much for reminding me of great and beloved childhood memories
So, I finally found out what that shitty system I owned all that time ago. Been trying to figure that out for far too long. I'm not sure if it's worth it, since it completely killed the awesome mental images that I projected onto it.
@ArtRockRules as i recall the circles remained it worked like the nes zapper did, reflecting light. but where duck hunt had pixel ducks, this required the circles on the ghosts flahing so it could determine hits
The people who did the Daphne laserdisc emulator came out with a new one called SINGE that plays these games on a computer. This is one of the supported titles.
@MaidenViolator I heard an urban legend that if you fuck up while playing Pops Ghostly you fuck up in real life too. Pretty spooky. I would forward this to 5 of my friends if I were you.
I want to hunt down the cocksuckers who made this piece of garbage and execute them in public, with a big sign saying, "This is what happens to people who make horrible game consoles."
surely don't make G-rated-games like this today. Hell, even Nintendo consoles have a bit of an edge to them. This game is just corny and squeaky clean.
Different time and a different universe the 1980s were compared to today..... personally, I blame Madonna for starting the downfall.
Yeah, it worked like the Captain Power toys and videos. The pattern of the flicker the gun or ship "saw" determined if you "shot" an enemy, ally, or were "damaged".
One of the Captain Power spaceships, the one that held Captain Power, was supposed to reflect the image of the toy on the screen or something. I thought that sounded really cool, but I can't remember any "reflection." I had everyone of those Captain Power toys!
Well, this was during the days when the Atari 2600 and Intellivision were still duking it out, so kids were naive enough to believe that these were video games, and their actions dictated what happened on the screen.
I don't remember anything about reflecting with the Captain Power toys. One of the air intakes had a sensor in it, to determine if you were shooting while a target was on the screen, or if an enemy attack was present to damage you with.
I've got The Rescue of Pops Ghostly on tape... I'll put it up as soon as I BUILD A NEW COMPUTER. The one I was using to rip Defenders of Dynatron City bought the farm in August, leaving me with a POS six year old laptop to internet with.
OMG thank you soooo much for posting this, I remember playing this at my grandma's house years ago, and nobody in my family can remember this console, or the game.

Holy shit, it's as if I finally found the real Candle Cove... Just without the pirates... and it's a light gun game.

Well... it looks like I've finally found something even worse than the games on the CDi.

Lol, me and my sister used to just watch the tape when we were kids, we had no idea it was a game I guess.

Quick question. If you just played the tape, would you still see the ghosts and stuff, just without the circles?

SINGE is the program it was built on. Actionmax emulator is a demo of the coding program.

Do you have an Action Max console? If you don't, the tape is useless.
TheMightyMrBen2008 3 years ago
Modern gaming is in desperate need of this kind of laughable absurdity.
Anything called Pops Ghostly automatically gets a nod.
And the commentator " Ghosts in the parlour!" It's like a precursor internet meme.

Well done video for Action Max. It's dark and the characters look distinct. They're funny as well.
