I'm noticing thumbs down on my few videos. Its really annoying when hours and hours and hours and hours of my time has been put into making them, and I think I make good quality videos. So a thumbs down for no reason annoys me! YouTube should only allow thumbs down when they post why.
@devonbiker I agree. I have one person thumbs downing every single one of my videos. This makes it pretty meaningless, other than to tell me they make the effort to find them, that they don't like me rather than my videos, but I have no idea why. I think perhaps the best way to see it is you've had an impact on them. If people are too cowardlly to express their thoughts it's their loss.
@Projoiner1 I'm sure you're right. It seems to me the system here is set up to actually encourage such behaviour by allowing invisibility and no responsibility for ones actions beyond breaking copyright. As individuals none of us appear to have any protection.
@Loreleila Hi... Um, that Up-then-Down thing might work, when y'do both on the same visit ; but, once departed the Clip, then the Die appears to stay Cast..(?). As it happened, today I uploaded a Poem which used to Busk very well (every donation is a Like !) ; & I'm chastened to find 0 Likes, & 2 Dis's, by Sundown... @phekwig I have no idea what it might be, nor does anyone really. Until someone makes a criticism or expresses their viewpoint as to why it's there we know nothing.
You can't identify who has thumbs downed you can you? I suppose its nice to get a reaction positive or negative. What did Oscar Wilde say (or was it Monty Python?) "There is only one thing worse than being talked about...not being talked about" But thats a bit shallow isn't it?
@gizzytiersen Shallow or no I think the notion that no publicity is bad publicity is quite a common belief, hence all the drama purely to attract attention.
2) ... After all, who wants to be important in an empty pub. At this time then, the pub’s owners would scratch his head and wonder, “What the heck happened with my crowd?” Then maybe he would miss those who were somehow unhappy, and wish for their return. And if they did return, he would be glad even if they thumbs-down. Because only in their presence he could thank them and say, "How could I make you stay?”
1) i give this comment a THUMBS DOWN!! hehehe:) If this channel were a pub, it would be busy and full of people hanging-out. If you got too big, you may want to create a VIP section. Then you can choose and invite only those who will agree and thumbs-up every move you make. Eventually, the people who aren’t invited will feel left-out and quit going to your pub. Then look and see at the VIP section dwindle, and be shut down.
@fulishproductions or rather I know I do not have great cause for self-examination in a moment of 'thumbs down' as it is nothing more than a blank, frowning face.
@L Well if I were to carry the metaphor into RL...then, trying to turn it into a smile, would certainly change things.
I'm finding that seems to be something I'm working on...how to get people to feel 'okay' or glad after talking to me. But I can't get obsessed always thinking about winning others' approval...and yet that skill is something that's a challenge for me.
I'm saying I've always found buttons but was never or rarely aware of it and now am. But not sure what to do with that.
@Loreleila G'day... Wow, I enjoy that idea of dispensing a Dislike onto the Clip of whatever Fragile Egomaniac has just blocked somebody, for daring to dissent...! It's exquisite, as the more Self- Righteous the Blocker, the more the Dislike will hurt. Sadly, these infantile types often have the Likes/Dis's Disabled... And I often give a Like, prior to being blocked, rewarding their upload of an opinon I then try to dispute. But, I can't later "Un-Like" it..! :-{
I find it interesting when you have the function for asking questions to users anonymously on certain sites (I'm thinking of tumblr here). I've found for some people, a mere simple question that subtly questions something they said results in either a really passive aggressive response or an outright 'hater-troll' denouncement, eg, they dismiss any point that is made against them, and they mainly bring up the nature of anonymity in asking the question.
No one like rejection. I think it pretty much just boils down to that. The videos that i tend to thumbs down are videos that seem to be intentionally disingenuous or any that have the comments turned off. If the comments are turned off it is almost a prompt for me to thumbs it down.
I have a guilty confession. I gave a lot of thumbs up when I watched videos today --- This was one of them, but I did give ONE thumb down to a truly bad video.
@2bsirius There's the thing though. What constitues bad to you may not to me, or whoever. It can mean a whole host of things, most of which we'll never know. I'm glad to hear you go round like the good fairy scattering thumbs ups. :)
@Loreleila Yes, it's a matter of what you like or what speaks to you. LOL about being a good fairy. No, most of the time I just watch a video and don't vote at all, but if I do, by THEORY it should appear in my feed and if anyone looks they'll see the videos I think are worth their time.
OMG five thumbs down on this for expressing an honest opinion. You have to wonder why some people take the time to be so silly and negative.
i don't understand what the fuss is about. one of my videos ( Jaycee Duggard ) has like 10 times as many thumbs down as thumbs up. doesn't bother me - i don't give a fuck AT ALL. it bothers me more in fact that lately i don't get ENOUGH thumbs down - makes me feel like i'm losing my edge.
I have one person who consistently down thumbs my videos regardless of content. I don't really care one way or the other, but it does pique my curoiousity as to why someone would bother to make the effort.
i never 2nd guess why my vids get down thumbed. it doesn't matter either way. i'm more interested in comments as a valid means of determining whether or not i was understood and/or appreciated for what was being expressed.
@gothatfunk Second guessing is almost invariably wrong, and I agree, comments tell you something, and not only that you can take the expression further there which I really like.
i'm told a thumbs down is a good thing from the perspective of youtube's algorithms and getting a video seen. not as good as a thumbs up maybe, but a lot better than no thumbs at all. all interaction with a video is good - ignoring it completely is actually the worst thing you can do to a video.

@TWITfromURANUS In my best opinion, thumbs up or thumbs down is an asset to Youtube. It’s not as much about us- compare to our value in the world of commerce. Comments, likes, and dislikes are put in a database in order for them to put you in a certain category. With tis knowledge, they can put the right cookies in your computer.
oh my god Loreleilaaa!..this is a terrible video,i don,t know how you have the brassneck to upload such an abomination!...i really think you need to go away and think about what you,ve done and when you,ve thought come back and apologise.
@Loreleila no i don,t care for all that nonsense i was just showing those secretive thumbs downers what they should do if they,re disgruntled....my comment was just an example to them and should not be construed as a true statement, but of course you realised that immediately :)
I find a video to be a steaming pile {i.e. is racist, sexist, or in any other way bigoted} I will thumbs down without a comment. If someone is a fundie or a neo-Nazi, I am sure they do not need any explanation. If there is something in a video that I find off for someone I am subbed to, I would rather leave a comment and most of the time I wont touch the thumb button. When it comes to folks rating videos I have made, I rarely pay attention to the ratings. I put more stock into the comments. :)
@YeOldeHeretic Interesting. I do pay attention to the ratings, but only because it's a kind of straw poll. The comments are far more important though, I agree.
I think if thumbs up/down was not anonymous it would not be nearly so distressing. I would get a lot of comfort from knowing who thinks what. Anonymity is a scary thing.
I think the five star rating was a better system. When I first joined youtube I assumed the five stars were to rate the quality of the video, so I would give five stars if the audio quality was really good and the picture really clear and the message communicated clearly. After a while I realised that most people took offence when you only gave them 3 stars because their audio was poor quality. So then I started giving everyone five stars to avoid hurting feelings...
@TheTempleofNature That's the thing. People rate on all sorts of different criteria, none of which we know. It might mean something but what is anyones guess, whether up or down.
Good thoughts, I think. Maybe it would be better if we had a ten star type rating so people had the opportunity to give a six or a three or a nine cuz it's rare when we absolutely agree or disagree. Maybe that's why most people don't bother to rate at all.
@Barklord I think something much more subtle is required, or throw the whole thing out altogether, which would probably be better. We don't walk down the street getting verbally rated and we wouldn't put up with it if we did (though I'm sure it's happening anyway :P)
@Barklord I think something much more subtle is required, or throw the whole thing out altogether, which would probably be better. We don't walk down the street getting verbally rated and we wouldn't put up with it if we did (though I'm sure it's happening anyway :P)
yes a thumbs down is useful, but people rate in a number of ways - up/down reflecting their opinion, or up/down counterbalancing the other votes (some may think that a video isn't as good or bad as what the thumbs reflect). there is no way of knowing, apart from asking the people that voted, how they rated.
I think youtube would be better if it showed you who rated what, but I guess they don't have resources or something
I suspect they may not make it public because if it were hardly anyone would do it and then there'd be no drama and a lot less views. I doubt it's anything to do with resources other than that.
I think people have a need for tribal allegiance and chieftain adulation, born out of an ancient survival mechanism against the elements. Since we now have our primitive needs met more or less by modern amenities our sycophantic behaviors are focused on groups or individuals that share our belief systems. And so we are reduced to passive aggressive thumbsing down and venomous internet comments out of the reach of an actual spear or punch in the nose. Sometimes a constructive conversation results.
@Loreleila On the other hand, humans have the power to share ideas and overcome their tribal survival mechanism. Intellect can supersede instincts, which also gives us an advantage over other animals in that we can consciously shape our future. We had better, because if we continue to thumbs down other peoples belief systems based on prejudice alone we may screw ourselves into extinction.
You know on Facebook there is no thumbs down.. And there has been many of times when people post things on there. And i am screaming "where in the hell is the thumbs down" Like it is all good or something... NOOOOOO it is not ALL GOOD !! There are things in this universe that i DO NOT LIKE !! And i can tell the difference between the two. And i let people KNOW.
The Latin phrase pollice verso is used in the context of gladiatorial combat for a hand gesture used by Ancient Roman crowds to pass judgment on a defeated gladiator. However, the type of gesture described by the phrase pollice verso and its meaning are unclear in the historical and literary record.
@Serge165 Indeed. I wonder if there's an element of the thumbs down meaning a death sentence in the reaction. If you're going to have ratings at all I do think they need to be more subtle than on/off.
I think that thumbs up and thumps down has an old and Arcane meaning in Magick circles and hte masonic parlance, I'm not sure what it means, I think it has something to dow ith 3, but its been given positive/negative connontation because of the up/down factor. I miss the 5 star system, which has todo with the stars up in the sky :D
I like when I see a thumbs down. Hopefully it means someone is thinking. Actually I have concern when I do not see at least one. I do not see it as a slight to whatever specified value we assign to ourselves. I think this is due to the importance (I place on) of not being subjected to the whims of an external force. The reason I do not like it on YT is due to my understanding. It was explained to me that the more thumbs down you have the less visible your video becomes. That is a bummer
@EuphoricImpact (2) I do not find thumbs down helpful.. unless an individual is willing to share why they think as they do. Now emotional thumbing (in either direction) is an irritation to me.
I have one troll that thumbs down my videos. I do not care. If all i got were thumbs down, i would still do what i do. I need criticism to help me improve. Nothing a critic could say will be has bad has my own criticism of myself. If it hurts, then i need to work on my ego more.
There are always going to be people we do not get along with . I will not block someone for disagreeing, i like debates. Only vulgar language or over the line insults get that. Hard to debate when all agree.
I take it in the sense as one less person that is going to tell somebody or at least suggest the viewing of my own videos since a thumbs down doesn't reflect itself in the activity section as do the thumbs up.
I think the dynamics is interesting but of course we choose to receive thumbs... we can turn it off. And the fact that we don't says something as well. Why does that one dimension matter at all? The simple answer is perhaps that it is a nice, fast and easy way to get a pulse. And the annoying thing about the thumbs downs that really don't relate to how interesting the video is or how good the argument is, is that it somewhat polutes that measure. But sure that just over-values that measure.
@socrates856 re turning off ratings: I perceive this as a mild form of censorship, of inhibiting discourse by manipulating the setting. Disabling comments is a (much) stronger expression of the same thing. Both are turn-offs as far as a robust debate is concerned.
@SilverBuddha Oh I don't know. On youtube you get blocked left and right for having a different point of view. I have a hard time conjuring up the thought that disabling ratings is censorship. Youtube could have never provided the feature to begin with... I think it's a stretch. And ratings are a poor and weak contributor to debate to begin with.
@socrates856 I'm not saying it IS censorship, but rather that it can influence how you feel about the debate space of the video. Set and setting, you know, every little thing matters. It's a stretch I agree, but I'm feelin nitpicky.
@SilverBuddha I do agree that it changes the feel of the video. But we are kinda trained to have an expectation there, which is part of it having that difference in feel.
@socrates856 It's interesting that there's a level of social pressure to have all these things operating, a sort of curious morality. Yet in reality surely they're there for us to use as we see fit.
I'm noticing thumbs down on my few videos. Its really annoying when hours and hours and hours and hours of my time has been put into making them, and I think I make good quality videos. So a thumbs down for no reason annoys me! YouTube should only allow thumbs down when they post why.

We just have to remember that we don't all think alike, and some minds are unfortunately, definitely defective.
Many like to leave comments for no other purpose than to create drama, to feel they have made an impact without actually having to think at all.
I wouldn't be surprised to find many of these people are quite young in age, or of a somewhat limited intellect.

Good thoughts, I think. Maybe it would be better if we had a ten star type rating so people had the opportunity to give a six or a three or a nine cuz it's rare when we absolutely agree or disagree. Maybe that's why most people don't bother to rate at all.
Barklord 1 month ago
@Barklord I think something much more subtle is required, or throw the whole thing out altogether, which would probably be better. We don't walk down the street getting verbally rated and we wouldn't put up with it if we did (though I'm sure it's happening anyway :P)

For fake balance i thumb down, thought i don't disagree.

yes a thumbs down is useful, but people rate in a number of ways - up/down reflecting their opinion, or up/down counterbalancing the other votes (some may think that a video isn't as good or bad as what the thumbs reflect). there is no way of knowing, apart from asking the people that voted, how they rated.
I think youtube would be better if it showed you who rated what, but I guess they don't have resources or something
PornographicSoul 1 month ago
@PornographicSoul No, no way of knowing at all.

Sometimes a constructive conversation results.
sliderglider 1 month ago
@sliderglider You're probably right. So much for evolution.
Loreleila 1 month ago
@Loreleila On the other hand, humans have the power to share ideas and overcome their tribal survival mechanism. Intellect can supersede instincts, which also gives us an advantage over other animals in that we can consciously shape our future. We had better, because if we continue to thumbs down other peoples belief systems based on prejudice alone we may screw ourselves into extinction.
sliderglider 1 month ago
@sliderglider Indeed. And we have that choice.

Serge165 1 month ago
@Serge165 Indeed. I wonder if there's an element of the thumbs down meaning a death sentence in the reaction. If you're going to have ratings at all I do think they need to be more subtle than on/off.
Loreleila 1 month ago

EuphoricImpact 1 month ago
@EuphoricImpact (2) I do not find thumbs down helpful.. unless an individual is willing to share why they think as they do. Now emotional thumbing (in either direction) is an irritation to me.
Enjoyed your video.
EuphoricImpact 1 month ago
@EuphoricImpact I don't think it has much impact on visibility. I know that rumour was flying about but I've never seen any evidence of it.
Thanks :)

ProfessorCWI 1 month ago
@ProfessorCWI Perhaps it's as well. If they showed up in the activity stream you could end up with a lynch mob.
Loreleila 1 month ago
I think the dynamics is interesting but of course we choose to receive thumbs... we can turn it off. And the fact that we don't says something as well. Why does that one dimension matter at all? The simple answer is perhaps that it is a nice, fast and easy way to get a pulse. And the annoying thing about the thumbs downs that really don't relate to how interesting the video is or how good the argument is, is that it somewhat polutes that measure. But sure that just over-values that measure.
socrates856 1 month ago
@socrates856 re turning off ratings: I perceive this as a mild form of censorship, of inhibiting discourse by manipulating the setting. Disabling comments is a (much) stronger expression of the same thing. Both are turn-offs as far as a robust debate is concerned.
SilverBuddha 1 month ago
@SilverBuddha Oh I don't know. On youtube you get blocked left and right for having a different point of view. I have a hard time conjuring up the thought that disabling ratings is censorship. Youtube could have never provided the feature to begin with... I think it's a stretch. And ratings are a poor and weak contributor to debate to begin with.
socrates856 1 month ago
@socrates856 I'm not saying it IS censorship, but rather that it can influence how you feel about the debate space of the video. Set and setting, you know, every little thing matters. It's a stretch I agree, but I'm feelin nitpicky.
SilverBuddha 1 month ago
@SilverBuddha I do agree that it changes the feel of the video. But we are kinda trained to have an expectation there, which is part of it having that difference in feel.
socrates856 1 month ago
@socrates856 Agreed.
SilverBuddha 1 month ago
@socrates856 It's interesting that there's a level of social pressure to have all these things operating, a sort of curious morality. Yet in reality surely they're there for us to use as we see fit.
