Soviet history deserves to be rewritten. Most Soviet soldiers of Ukrainian descent were threatened and forced to fight for the Soviet Army at gun point. Many Ukrainian POWs once inside Germany, volunteered to work for Germany, or in Ukrainian Waffen-SS.

Interfering were: the Soviet partisans (often of Jewish descent), but also strategic Nazi policists. Very often Wehrmacht supported Polish villages against "Ukrainian gang terror" (Bandenterror), and SS supported UPA often. It was a civil war. The civil internal strife is alive in Ukraine even 2010!

But also Piskorowice and other Ukrainian villages. Source for instance: Misiło, Eugeniusz (2006). "Pawłokoma 3 III 1945 r.", printed in Warsaw, Hryciuk, Kappeler. And do not forget Armia Ludowa and their Akcja Wisła (1947) by PRL (PRP). About 60,000 ethnic Ukrainian citizens were killed by various Polish units from 1942-45.

But UPA murdered much more people (120 000 Poles and 40 000 Ukrainians source:Timothy Snyder "Reconstruction of nations") despite the fact that UPA was a very small organization. OUN/UPA had a fascistic ideology based on hatred (see "Dekalog ukraińskiego nacjonalisty"). AK was the biggest underground army with an international recognition, under the command of the legal Polish government in exile. UPA commanders like Roman Szuchewycz ordered ethnic cleanings, AK commanders condemned war crimes.

A continuation of 1919-1921 conflicts and Polonization aggression from 1922-1939. Sometimes Poles were armed by Wehrmacht, UPA always by SS-Hilfspolizei.

Keep in mind that Shevchenko too "created" Ukraine in his poems long before the era of soviet power.

Of course it is true, that Ukrainian Greek Catholic uniate churches supported Ukrainian nationalism, while the Russian Moscow Patriarchate and the Russian Orthodox opposed the Ukrainian independence movement. Like Belarussians, Ukrainians are indeed transitional peoples, but still with their autonomy!

Ukraine was also called Kievan Rus' and West-Ukraine called Ruś Czerwona. Not Muscovy, not Russia proper. Of course the East Slavic peoples of Ukrainians-Rusyns, Belarussians, Moscovite Russians are all closely related indeed. Like Swedes and Norwegians are related, but not the same people.
