Well, because originally, this was Etude-Tableaux Op.33 No.5, but in later editions, Rachmaninov moved everything after Etude-Tableaux Op.33 No.4 back, because the original Etude-Tableaux Op.33 No.4 (Red Riding Hood) was moved to the name Etude-Tableaux Op.39 No.6 by Rachmaninov himself, which is it's most common reference today.
And hence, the Etude-Tableaux's after when the original Etude-Tableaux Op.33 No.4 was moved to today's place, all the ones in front were moved forward.
Angelich a une sensibilité et une technique hors du commun ,mais pourquoi est il si rare de l'entendre en concert en dehors de Paris? Il nous manque .
Beautiful performance, though I wouldn't go as far as degrading Lugansky at its expense.

@nukepcr YES, his voice-leading is beyond compare! I have his recording of all the etudes-tableaux, and they are all just as masterfully played.

Why is Nº5 for purists?

And, the Etude-Tableaux's after the original Etude Tableaux Op.33 No.4 were revised, and I say again, they were moved back.

Oh, thanks :)
In that case, the Op39, Nº6,7,8 and 9 were supposed to be Nº5,6,7 and 8 right?
