The recommended RDA is 150 mcg which takes care of the thyroid issue only. Quote from various sources:
"Adequate iodine levels are crucial for all aspects of health and well-being; in fact, in generations past, physicians routinely used iodine in medical practice. The typical dose was 1 gram of potassium iodide (KI), containing 770 mg of iodine, which far exceeds the current U.S. RDA of 150 mcg."
@2healthnuts Thanks for the comments, remember we live in a generation where everything we eat is loaded in salt, and nowadays salt is specifically iodized to prevent goiters. I don't know if we really need to worry about iodine intake.
I got my quote: "North Americans are most likely over-iodized" from my renal physiology & nephrology textbook when I had to study excretion. I can't take the credit for that quote =)
(PS, you commented on CCHR videos, stay away, they are a dangerous cult.)
@eBiology Just sent you a private message with more info. I think you'll really enjoy learning about Iodine. I know I have. Also about the iodine in salt. American's are finally learning to reduce salt intake and many are going to sea salt which does not contain iodine. Plus higher concentrations of chloride in salt (NaCl) inhibits absorption of Iodine.
Oh and what are CCHR videos?... I guess I must have commented but in retrospect I'm not sure what videos/channel you are referring to.
Lack of Iodine (common today) is one cause of insomnia. Do your research. You can supplement or take the 24 hour urine loading test. This is one of the most important things you can do to resolve your sleep issues. Iodine also improves your immune system, kills cancer cells (deficiency is directly related to breast cancer) lowers blood pressure, removes fluoride, chlorine, bromine (toxic to the body) and more. Hope you'll do your research! :-)
@eBiology Also: "Dr. Albert S. Gyorgi (1893–1986), the physician who discovered vitamin C, wrote: "When I was a medical student, iodine in the form of KI was the universal medicine. Nobody knew what it did, but it did something and did something good."
For more info. I hope you'll check out the website iodine 4 health (no spaces) to get the latest research and mp3's or check out Dr. Brownstein's Book - Iodine, Why You Need It, Why You Can't Live Without It.

@sleeprestlive Sleep is 1/3rd of our lives. When it is not working the other 2/3rds are likely to suffer.

@2healthnuts 1 in 20,000 being iodine deficient isn't very common.... I guess our definitions of common are slightly different.
